BACKGROUND: The proportion of children undergoing strabismus surgery in the total volume of eye muscle operations appears to have decreased. To verify this we analyzed the age of patients who underwent extraocular muscle (EOM) surgery. METHODS: The data of patients who underwent EOM surgery at the University Eye Hospital Giessen between 1991 and 2019 were reviewed and the numbers of operations in decadal age groups were compared to the German population in the respective period...

Conventional squinted sliding spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging suffers from substantial swath width reduction and complex processing requirements due to the continuous variation in the squint angle and the large range cell migration (RCM) throughout the data acquisition interval. A novel two-dimensional (2D) beam scanning mode for high-resolution wide swath (HRWS) imaging is proposed. The key to the novel imaging mode lies in the synchronous scanning of azimuth and range beams, allowing for a broader and more flexible imaging swath with a high geometric resolution...

An improved understanding of behaviors reflecting acute pain in cats is a priority for feline welfare. The aim of this study was to create and validate a comprehensive ethogram of acute pain behaviors in cats that can discriminate painful versus non-painful individuals. An inventory of behaviors (ethogram) with their respective descriptors was created based on a literature review of PubMed, Web of Science and CAB Abstracts databases. The ethogram was divided into ten behavior categories that could be evaluated by duration and/or frequency: position in the cage, exploratory behaviors, activity, posture and body position, affective-emotional states, vocalization, playing (with an object), feeding, post-feeding and facial expressions/features...

We report about a case of a woman in her 50s with a chondrosarcoma of the petrous apex. She has a strabism due to a right-sided amblyopia since childhood and noticed a slowly progressive squint angle in the last months. Her general practitioner (GP) referred her to an ophthalmologist who diagnosed a left abducens paresis and initiated an MRI demonstrating a mass in the left petrous apex. A transnasal endoscopic transsphenoidal biopsy revealed a grade I chondrosarcoma. The patient underwent an endoscopic transsphenoidal anterior petrosectomy approach with complete removal of the tumour...

The brainstem houses neuronal circuits that control homeostasis of vital functions. These include the depth and rate of breathing1 , 2 and, critically, apnea, a transient cessation of breathing that prevents noxious vapors from entering further into the respiratory tract. Current thinking is that this reflex is mediated by two sensory pathways. One known pathway involves vagal and glossopharyngeal afferents that project to the nucleus of the solitary tract.3 , 4 , 5 Yet, apnea induced by electrical stimulation of the nasal epithelium or delivery of ammonia vapors to the nose persists after brainstem transection at the pontomedullary junction, indicating that the circuitry that mediates this reflex is intrinsic to the medulla...

Imaging and tracking tools for natural cellular RNA with improved biocompatibility, specificity, and sensitivity are critical to understanding RNA function and providing insights into disease therapeutics. We developed a new genetically encoded sensor using fluorogenic allosteric aptamer (FaApt) for the sensitive imaging of the localization and dynamics of RNA targets in live cells. Target RNAs can be specifically recognized with our sensor by forming perfectly complementary duplexes, which in turn can induce allosteric structural changes of the sensor to refold the native conformation of fluorogenic RNA aptamers...

Cornea plana (CP) is a rare ocular condition existing in two distinct clinical and hereditary forms: a milder, autosomal dominant type I and a more severe, autosomal recessive type II. The condition is more commonly found in Finnish, Saudi, and Czech families. We report three brothers from a consanguineous marriage that presented with complaints of decreased vision of varying degrees. All three of them have blue, thick, and hazy corneas with shallow anterior chamber depths. The additional features of CP type II were seen in the older two brothers including arcus lipoids, ill-demarcated limbus, and an accommodative squint...

A ten-year-old male child was referred with complaints of blurring of vision and deviation of the eye. On examination, the right eye has an esodeviation squint with a best corrected visual acuity of 6/60 Snellen's acuity and 6/6 Snellen's acuity in the left eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscope of the right eye showed coloboma at the 9 o'clock position with cataract. The rest of the anterior and posterior segments was normal in both eyes. Thus, a diagnosis of unilateral lens coloboma with amblyopia was made.

Pituitary apoplexy is a serious condition, which if left untreated, might lead to irreversible life-long complications. Hence, pituitary apoplexy should always be included in the differential diagnoses of a patient with an isolated sixth cranial nerve (CN) palsy. This report highlights the case of a patient presenting with isolated CN palsy associated with pituitary apoplexy. Although pituitary adenomas are common, they seldom present with isolated abducent nerve palsy without any other CN involvement. The 47-year-old female patient presented with acute right eye pain, diplopia, and a squint...

Fetal malpresentation, malposition, and asynclitism are among the most common determinants of a protracted active phase of labor, arrest of dilatation during the first stage, and arrest of descent in the second stage. The diagnosis of these conditions is traditionally based on vaginal examination, which is subjective and poorly reproducible. Intrapartum sonography has been demonstrated to yield higher accuracy than vaginal examination in characterizing fetal malposition, and some guidelines endorse its use for the verification of the occiput position before performing an instrumental delivery...
