INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Obesity is a global epidemic, and bariatric surgery is an effective treatment. During this surgery, rare abnormalities in the small intestine, like ectopic pancreas (EP), can be found. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old male presented at the surgical clinic with a complaint of morbid obesity, weighing 140 KG. Since he was unable to commit to a diet, bariatric surgery was performed. During the surgery, the gastrointestinal tract was examined, and an incidental finding was noted in the wall of the proximal jejunum...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application value of transabdominal ultrasonography in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignant tumors. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the transabdominal ultrasound imaging data of 284 patients with gastrointestinal tumors admitted to our hospital from April 2019 to March 2022 and assessed the accuracy of transabdominal ultrasound in diagnosing different types of gastrointestinal tumor diseases. The diagnostic accuracy of transabdominal ultrasonography for TNM staging of gastrointestinal malignancies was calculated...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Typically, GISTs are solitary; however, in rare cases, they may be multiple and appear in one or more organs. Multiple GISTs can appear in familial GISTs, children, or certain tumor syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 1, Carney syndrome, and Carney-Stratakis syndrome. However, the diagnosis of primary multiple sporadic GISTs is often more difficult than that of these diseases. Herein, we report a case of multiple primary sporadic GISTs in a 64-year-old man, affecting the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum, as identified through dual-time point positron emission tomography (PET) with 18 F-labeled fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) and computed tomography (18 F-FDG PET/CT)...

Extraintestinal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are extremely rare, and adrenal GISTs are even exceptional. Only three cases have been reported in the literature thus far, the current case being the fourth. This case demonstrates the need of including extraintestinal GIST in the differential diagnosis when investigating adrenal tumors. Herein, we present a case of adrenal GIST diagnosed in a 60-year-old female patient who had a left adrenal GIST surgically removed as an adrenal tumor.

OBJECTIVE: A mock jury experiment tested the effects of attorney guidance and jury deliberation to mitigate the challenges that civil juries face in assessing damages. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that two types of attorney guidance (per diem, per diem + lump sum), theoretically based in the Hans-Reyna model of jury decision making, would improve jury decision making compared with no guidance against five key benchmarks: injury assessment, validity, reliability, verbatim-gist coherence, and metacognitive experience...

Peptides are promising therapeutic agents for various biological targets due to their high efficacy and low toxicity, and the design of peptide ligands with high binding affinity to the target of interest is of utmost importance in peptide-based drug design. Introducing a conformational constraint to a flexible peptide ligand using a side-chain lactam-bridge is a convenient and efficient method to improve its binding affinity to the target. However, in general, such a small structural modification to a flexible ligand made with the intent of lowering the configurational entropic penalty for binding may have unintended consequences in different components of the binding enthalpy and entropy, including the configurational entropy component, which are still not clearly understood...

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign lesion of mesenchymal origin that may present similar characteristics to other more common tumors. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman with a tumor in the proximal jejunum, initially suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Surgical resection was performed, revealing a well-demarcated nodule at the anti-mesenteric border with microscopic features typical of a calcifying fibrous tumor. The tumor cells were positive for CD34 and negative for other markers, differentiating it from other neoplasms...

BACKGROUND: Although several prognostic factors in GIST have been well studied such as tumour size, mitotic rate, or localization, the influence of microscopic margins or R1 resection remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of R1 resection on the prognosis of GIST in a large multicentre retrospective series of patients. METHODS: From 2001 to 2013, 1413 patients who underwent surgery for any site of GIST were identified from 61 European centers...

This report describes the cytologic features of a recently described MXD4::NUTM1-rearranged colonic sarcoma metastatic to the midclavicular soft tissue. Thirteen years ago, a 65-year-old woman presented with a cecal mass and subsequent liver mass. The cecal mass was diagnosed as malignant undifferentiated spindled and epithelioid neoplasm based on morphology and lack of tumor immunoreactivity with a panel of epithelial, smooth muscle, skeletal, melanoma, hematologic, and GIST markers. The liver mass showed morphologic and immunophenotypic similarity to the epithelioid component of the patient's cecal mass, albeit devoid of the spindled component...

IMPORTANCE: Long-term symptoms, lasting more than 4 consecutive weeks after acute COVID-19 disease, are an important consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Many prior studies have lacked a non-SARS-CoV-2-infected control population to distinguish background prevalence of symptoms from the direct impact of COVID-19 disease. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of long-term physical and mental health symptoms associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in a large population of blood donors based on self-report and serologic test results...

For more than 20 years gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) have been a paradigm for a targeted treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. A fundamental prerequisite for a neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment of localized GIST or an additive treatment of metastatic GIST is the molecular typing of tumors, ideally at the initial diagnosis. In addition, the possibility of a hereditary or syndromic predisposition must be considered because this results in consequences for the treatment and a different follow-up strategy...

Gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is a rare disease with an annual incidence of 10 cases per million. Herein, we present the case of a 45-year-old man who visited our clinic with complaints of weight loss and anorexia, without changes in bowel habits or vomiting, for four months. On physical examination, all vital signs were normal. The abdomen was distended without tenderness and had a giant upper abdominal mass. Tumour marker investigation revealed high levels of cancer antigen 125 with normal levels of alpha-1-fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms with variable behavior characterized by differentiation toward the interstitial cells of Cajal occurring anywhere in the gastrointestinal stromal tract. Frequently, GISTs have fibrous stroma within tumor cell proliferation areas, which is unlike other types of malignant tumors. If this desmoplasia is active, there is a possibility that some sort of transmitter exists between GIST cells and cells related to fibrosis in the tumor cell proliferation areas...

Laparoscopic surgery has been used to treat gastric submucosal tumors (SMTs). Laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS) has been used when subtotal resection has been difficult, which enabled resection of these tumors. In this study, we reviewed the medical records of patients with gastric SMTs who underwent laparoscopic surgery in our hospital with the aim of reporting the surgical indications, procedures (especially for LECS), and outcomes of surgery.
