BACKGROUND: According to the National Institutes of Health classification of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), skin ulcers after allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) are recorded as having the maximal severity score but published data are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To describe skin ulcers related to cGVHD with an emphasis on clinical findings, associated morbidity, management and evolution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A multicentre retrospective analysis was carried out of patients with a diagnosis of cGVHD skin ulcers...

To determine prognostic factors for survival in bone marrow transplant recipients with invasive aspergillosis (IA), we retrospectively reviewed 27 IA cases observed in our bone marrow transplantation unit between January 1994 and October 1994. On 30 September 1997, six patients were alive and disease-free. The median survival after IA diagnosis was 36 days. Of eight variables found to be related to survival according to the univariate analysis, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) status at IA diagnosis (P = .0008) and the cumulative prednisolone dose taken during the week preceding IA diagnosis (CPDlw) (P < ...

The aim of this study was to analyse the Raman and infrared spectra of eight common mammalian bile acids in order to identify intermolecular interactions between hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The results are considered in the light of the new hydrophilic/hydrophobic classification of bile acids. The alcohol OH group of the hydrophobic bile acids forms different intermolecular bonds. The most hydrophobic bile acid, lithocholic acid forms polymers, and this may explain its very low water solubility. The hydrophilic bile acids have some of their alcohol OH groups free of any intermolecular interaction...

Acquired von Willebrand's syndrome with a regressive evolution is described in a 66 year old man with Waldenström's disease. An inhibitor electively directed against Ristocetin cofactor activity has been demonstrated, active in vitro after incubation at 37 degrees C. Serum fractionation showed that the inhibitor was independent of the monoclonal IgM and subsequent purification that it was IgG in nature. The results permit its classification as an auto-antibody.
