Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable and chronically debilitating skeletal dysplasia. Patients with OI typically present with reduced bone mass, tendency for recurrent fractures, short stature and bowing deformities of the long bones. Mutations causative of OI have been identified in over 20 genes involved in collagen folding, posttranslational modification and processing, and in bone mineralization and osteoblast development. In 2016, we described the first X-linked recessive form of OI caused by MBTPS2 missense variants in patients with moderate to severe phenotypes...

African hair shaft and pigmented scalp have unique features that challenge diagnosis in scarring alopecia. In addition, Black patients may associate 2 or more types of hair disorders. Therefore, it is imperative to understand their findings thoroughly to establish a good diagnosis. Differential diagnosis on the frontal scalp includes traction alopecia and frontal fibrosing alopecia. Disorders such as central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, fibrosing alopecia in a pattern distribution, discoid lupus erythematosus, and lichen planopilaris usually affect the middle scalp...

INTRODUCTION: Several dermatological diseases lead to inflammatory conditions of the scalp. Most of these afflictions are recalcitrant and require long term maintenance treatment. OBJECTIVES: We present a case series where topical tacrolimus was used in a solution vehicle for these conditions. METHODS: A total of 22 patients (aged 24-90 years) with confirmed diagnosis of lichen planus pilaris (LPP), discoid lupus (DL), frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), erosive pustulosis of the scalp (EPS) or folliculitis decalvans (FD) were evaluated and treated with tacrolimus solution (0...

Common skin disorders such as acne vulgaris, rosacea and folliculitis are bothersome prevalent inflammatory diseases of hair follicles that can easily be investigated bedside using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) with micrometre resolution, opening a novel era for high-resolution hair follicle diagnostics and quantitative treatment evaluation. EMBASE, PubMed and Web of Science were searched until 5 January 2023 to identify all studies imaging hair follicle characteristics by RCM and OCT for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment in hair follicle-based skin disorders...

Collagen VI-related myopathies are characterized by severe muscle involvement and skin involvement (keratosis pilaris and impaired healing with the development of abnormal scars, especially keloids). Scalp involvement and hair loss have not been reported among cutaneous changes associated with collagen VI mutations. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical, trichoscopic, and histological findings of the scalp changes in patients affected by COL VI mutations and to estimate their prevalence. Patients with Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy were enrolled and underwent clinical and trichoscopic examinations and a scalp biopsy for histopathology...

Folliculitis decalvans is a chronic inflammatory skin disease leading to scarring alopecia. Management of this disabling disease is difficult and no treatment is currently approved. Current knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of folliculitis decalvans suggests the benefit of using anti-tumour necrosis factor-α. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of anti-tumour necrosis factor-α for management of folliculitis decalvans. A single-centre retrospective pilot study included patients with refractory folliculitis decalvans treated by tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors...

The diagnosis of tinea capitis is usually made by clinical signs and direct microscopic examination. Early diagnosis of this dermatophytic infection, which may cause permanent hair loss if not treated appropriately, is very crucial. In recent years, the use of dermoscopy has helped with early diagnosis. However, when tinea capitis has an atypical course and develops in adulthood, it can be confused with several diseases, such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis decalvans, acne keloidalis, and dissecting cellulitis...

BACKGROUND: Folliculitis decalvans (FD) is a rare primary neutrophilic scarring alopecia whose etiology has not been completely elucidated yet. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine if the follicular microbiota residing in FD-affected hair follicles had a distinct microbiological signature and if an aberrant immune response was present in the pathogenesis of FD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 10 patients affected by FD...

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is one of therapeutic targets in oncology for solid tumors originating from epithelial tissue, such as non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and breast cancer. EGFR inhibitors used in cancer treatment may cause a broad spectrum of dose-dependent cutaneous adverse events, including acneiform papulopustular rash, nail and hair disturbances, xerosis, and mucositis. The pathogenesis of the EGFR inhibitor-induced adverse reactions originates from disturbances in keratinocyte differentiation, cytokine secretion, and neutrophil chemotaxis...

INTRODUCTION: The superficial infection that involves the hair follicle with bogginess or induration of involved parts of the scalp along with pustules, erosions, crusts, ulcers, and scales resulting in hair fall is known as folliculitis decalvans (FD). This condition accounts for approximately 11% of all cases with primary cicatricial alopecia. Based on clinical features like Keshadhwansha (hair fall) with Harsha (hypersensitivity), Kandu (itching), Toda (pain), FD can be correlated with Raktaja Krimi Vikara (RKV)...

UNLABELLED: Classification of scarring alopecia poses a major problem, as there is considerable clinicopathologic overlap, particularly between lupus erythematosus (LE) and lichen planopilaris (LPP), especially in later stages. CD123 positive plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) have been shown recently to be present in all forms of LE and are touted to be useful in differentiating LE from other scarring alopecias. Their distribution in non-scarring alopecia is not well documented. This is the first study that examines the PDC in both scarring and non-scarring alopecias...

The folliculitis decalvans (FD) and lichen planopilaris (LPP) phenotypic spectrum combines biphasic features of FD and LPP. It is characterized by successive or concomitant occurrence of pustules, crusts, follicular tufts, perifollicular erythema, perifollicular scales, and cicatricial alopecia and includes mixed histologic features of both FD and LPP. Here, we report the case of a 33-year-old female patient with a 30-year history of FD-LPP phenotypic spectrum lesions.
