REVIEW
Giannamaria Annunziato, Gabriele Costantino
Introduction : Antimicrobial peptides are a large class of compounds that are part of innate immune response found among all classes of life and are considered promising compounds to deal with antimicrobial resistance. These AMPs have been demonstrated to have some advantages over the traditional antibiotics with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities and even overcome bacterial drug-resistance. Areas covered : The present review represents a comprehensive analysis of patents and patent applications available on Espacenet, from the year 2015 to 2020 referring to the therapeutic use of AMPs...

Quantification of colistin in plasma samples may be very useful in optimizing therapy especially in special patients' population. Nevertheless, therapeutic drug monitoring of colistin is still limited probably for the low number of laboratories which perform this analysis and for high shipment costs. We developed and validated new UHPLC-MS/MS methods to quantify colistin in plasma and in dried plasma spots (DPS) collected on dried sample spots devices (DSSD). Colistin A, Colistin B and polimixin B, used as internal standard, were detected using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) of the following specific transitions: 585...

As pyometra is recognized as one of the main causes of disease and death in the bitch the purposes of this study were to evaluate microbiological and histopathological aspects of canine pyometra and to research the virulence factors of the E. coli isolates identifying possible risks to human health. The microbiological isolation from the intrauterine contents of 100 dogs with pyometra was carried out and the virulence factors in the E. coli strains were identified using PCR method. This study also consisted of the counting of microorganisms colonies forming units in samples of intrauterine content, tests of antimicrobial susceptibility of the E...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to value the impact of the consumption of the topical antibiotics used in ophthalmology and to lay the foundations for their prudent use. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive study about antibiotic use in Spain between 1st January 2004 and 31th December 2008 was carried out. Drugs used in the study had to follow the next criteria: topical administration and ophthalmic antibiotics only or in association. Data of the number of vials and nosocomial consumption were provided by Intercontinental Marketing Services (IMS) and Health National System, respectively...

A study was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of Salmonella and its serovars among porcine slaughterhouses, to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance profiles and to know the presence of class 1 integrons as possible reservoir of resistance. From a total of 386 samples from four porcine slaughterhouses of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe Provinces (Argentina), 93 (24.1%) Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica strains were identified, 52 (55.9%) from cecal contents and 41 (44.1%) from ileocecal lymph nodes...

The diffusion of the outlines of antibiotic sensitivity is a practice that is recommended for improving the prescription of antibiotics and for controlling the appearance and spread of resistances. During the years 2003 and 2004, data was gathered on the sensitivity to antibiotics of the main bacteria isolated in outpatient urine cultures, coprocultures, faringoamygdal and otic smears in the Pamplona health area, which attends to a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Of the 9,495 uropathogens isolated, 90% were sensitive to amoxicillin-clavulanate, 96...

The susceptibility to 30 antimicrobial agents was determined by the disk diffusion method for a collection of 172 enterococcal strains, including 96 isolates from dairy sources, 50 isolates of human and veterinary origin, and 26 reference strains from 24 different enterococcal species. Results were analysed by hierarchic numerical methods to cluster strains and to group antimicrobials according to similarity profiles. Resistance to 17 of the 30 antimicrobials showed to be correlated, leading to four groups reflecting the mode of action: quinolones (ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin); macrolides (erythromycin, spiramycin), phenicols (cloramphenicol) and tetracyclins (tetracycline, oxytetracyclin); aminoglycosides (gentamicin, kanamycin) and lincosamides (clindamycin); penicillins (amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin G, piperacillin) and carbapenems (imipenem)...

Two different decontamination systems, heat and acid, and two isolation media, GVPC and MWY agar were tested for the recovery of Legionella pneumophila from drinking water. The samples were concentrated by filtration through 0.2 micron polyamide filter and the membranes were resuspended in the original water samples. The suspension was divided into three parts: the first was placed in a 50 degrees C water bath, the second was acidified in HCl-KCl solution and the third did not undergo any treatment. The isolation was made by means of media containing charcoal, yeast extract and glycine with cycloeximide (GVPC) or vancomycin, polimixin B, anysomicin and dyes (MWY)...

Fever accompanies subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the majority of patients. In a previous study, hemoglobin (Hb) was shown to catalyze in vitro, under aerobic conditions, the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2alpha. The aim of the present work was to assess whether this pathway also operates in vivo and to provide a mechanism to explain post-SAH fever. To this end, PGE2 concentration was determined in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of conscious rabbits chronically cannulated in the lateral ventricle and cisterna magna, following intracerebroventricular (i...

The authors have modified the technique of the lysozyme test by adding polimixin M sulfate into the gel bacterial medium. Rapid diagnosis with the use of this test is based on different time of the appearance of the lysis areas: in bacterial meningitides the CSF lysozyme activity is detectable within 15-120 min, whereas in viral meningitides it manifests 40-50 min later or does not manifest at all. The results were found to depend on the time of the CSF collection: the earlier the CSF samples were obtained, the higher was the share of positive results...

It has been studied the antibiotic sensitivity of 27 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains belonging to only two types, isolated hospitalized children and responsible of different clinical pictures. The strains were in vitro resistant to Carbenicillin, Sisomicine, Gentamycine and many other antibiotic tested, partially resistant to Tobramycin and sensitive to Amikacine, Polimixine B and Colistatin.
