Facial aesthetic procedures have become increasingly popular and complex, making knowledge of facial anatomy crucial for achieving desired outcomes without complications. Some of the most common procedures include blepharoplasty, bichectomy, face-lifts, facial implants, thread lifting, and fillers. Blepharoplasty and bichectomy are surgical procedures that respectively aim to restore youthful contours to the periorbita and create a slimmer lower face by removing Bichat fat from the maxillofacial region. Facial implants are used for aesthetic augmentation of the skeletal structure and restoration of facial contour by using biomaterials or autogenous bone grafts...

Generally, if the size of a lip cancer defect exceeds 30% of the lower lip, a local flap or free flap is recommended. However, defects up to 50% of the lower lip in size have been reconstructed successfully by primary closure without a local flap or free flap. In one case, an 80-year-old male farmer who had smoked for more than 50 years presented with squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip and underwent mass resection and supraomohyoid neck dissection. The defect accounted for almost 2/3 of the lower lip and was repaired by primary closure with V-shaped resection...

BACKGROUND: Thermage is a monopolar radiofrequency (RF). It has become an indispensable part of facial and body youthful methods. Although the current device is constantly improving in epidermal cooling techniques and even automatically measures the local impedance value, applying surface anesthesia can take some of the pain away caused by thermage, and the patient's severe pain in the jaw and neck areas is still difficult to resolve. METHODS: The author describes how he uses the combination of the buccal nerve block (BNB) and the superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) to improve the comfort of the patient's face and neck treatment of patients...

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD) may be associated with major cosmetic or functional consequences. However, management recommendations for CFD are currently unavailable. Therefore, this systematic literature review aimed to review the existing approaches for CFD management and propose a management algorithm. The focus question was "What are the different options for CFD treatment and their complication rates?" The MEDLINE database was searched, and 33 articles evaluating a total of 1154 patients were reviewed...

Giant keratinocyte tumors, in particular basal cell carcinomas of the scalp area, are a serious challenge for dermatosurgeons, oncologists, and maxillofacial and reconstructive surgeons. The scalp area is limited in terms of skin mobility, and its elasticity decreases with age. The size of the tumors in this area and the degree of infiltration of the underlying tissues are important for the therapeutic choice, from surgical removal, waiting for granulations to form, and placing a split skin mesh graft (at a later stage) to performing complex rotational/transpositional or advancement flaps...

Butylparaben (BuP) is a common antibacterial preservative utilized extensively in food, medical supplies, cosmetics, and personal care products. The current study reports the use of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos to investigate potential developmental toxicity caused by exposure to BuP. The development of Neural crest cells (NCCs) is highly active during gastrulation in Zebrafish embryos. Thus, we utilized 0.5 mg/L, 0.75 mg/L, and 1 mg/L BuP solutions, respectively, in accordance with the international safety standard dosage...

Myositis ossificans of the temporalis muscle results in a cosmetic problem both before and after treatment because of the preoperative swelling and the postoperative defect respectively. The authors hypothesized that a patient-specific Polyether-ether ketone implant can be appropriate for immediate obliteration and reconstruction of such defect benefiting from the accuracy of CAD/CAM technology and computer-guided maxillofacial surgery. A Forty-year-old male patient with myositis ossificans affecting the left temporalis muscle was treated with a computer-guided surgical approach, a patient-specific implant was fabricated to obliterate the defect and avoid temporal hollowing using PEEK material...

Intraosseous vascular anomalies represent less than 1% of all bony tumors. When they involve the maxillofacial skeleton, these masses may cause substantial morbidity and aesthetic concern. Herein, we highlight a case of a maxillary intraosseous venous malformation manifesting as functional lacrimal duct obstruction with epiphora, sinus pressure, and increasing medial canthal/maxillary fullness over 2 years in a young, healthy woman. Surgical excision of the lesion was accomplished without a skin incision by coupling a transoral, midface degloving technique with a transconjunctival-transcaruncular approach...

In the XXI century, application of nanostructures in oral medicine has become common. In oral medicine, using nanostructures for the treatment of dental caries constitutes a great challenge. There are extensive studies on the implementation of nanomaterials to dental composites in order to improve their properties, e.g., their adhesive strength. Moreover, nanostructures are helpful in dental implant applications as well as in maxillofacial surgery for accelerated healing, promoting osseointegration, and others...

Pressure-induced alopecias (PAs) are an infrequent group of scarring and nonscarring alopecias that occur after ischemic obstruction of capillaries that leads to circumscribed areas of hair loss. Initially described after prolonged surgeries or immobilization, type 1 PA occurs after sustained external pressure to the skin, mainly the scalp prominences. Alopecia induced by cosmetic procedures, referred in this review as type 2 PA, is reported with increased frequency in literature and predominantly emerges from pressure exerted by the volume of injectables...

The popularity of cosmetic surgery is on the increase with the face being one of the most common anatomical areas operated on. Pre-existing mental health conditions can be associated with adverse patient outcomes after cosmetic surgery and can result in deterioration of postoperative mental health and lack of patient satisfaction. Therefore, identifying the presence of psychiatric disorders through preoperative screening should be considered during consultation for facial cosmetic surgery. In this study, we reviewed the types of preoperative mental health screening tools used in cosmetic facial surgery and the prevalence of mental health conditions among patients undergoing cosmetic facial surgery...

Non-surgical facial aesthetics (NSFA) are cosmetic procedures intended to reduce signs of ageing and provide facial rejuvenation. There is currently no recommendation for NSFA to be included in the undergraduate dental curriculum globally. This study aims to gain the views of final year dental students about pursuing a career in NSFA. An online survey was completed by 114 final year dental students across two English Universities. A total of 67% (77/114) of students would pursue a career in NSFA. A total of 76% (87/114) and 75% (86/114) of students were not aware of the complications associated with the administration of dermal fillers and Botox injections, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: Complete or partial resection of the maxilla during tumor surgery causes oronasal defects, leading to oral-maxillofacial dysfunction, for which the obturator prosthesis is an important treatment option. Traditional manufacturing of obturators involves great complexity, often results in impaired function and fit, and is time-consuming. This paper presents a case of using 3D stereolithography as a guide design for defect reconstruction with a maxillary obturator prosthesis...
