BACKGROUND: Surgical resection is the gold standard therapy for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRM). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of tumor growth patterns on disease recurrence. METHODS: We enrolled 91 patients who underwent CRM resection. Pathological specimens were prospectively evaluated, with particular attention given to tumor growth patterns (infiltrative vs pushing). RESULTS: Tumor recurrence was observed in 65 patients (71...

Available data correlating symptoms of colon cancer patients with the severity of the disease are very limited. In a population-based setting, we correlated information on symptoms of colon cancer patients with several pathological tumor parameters and survival. Information on all patients diagnosed with colon cancer in Iceland in 1995-2004 for this retrospective, population-based study was obtained from the Icelandic Cancer Registry. Information on symptoms of patients and blood hemoglobin was collected from patients' files...

Although most breast cancers in BRCA1 mutation carriers are estrogen receptor negative (ER-) with a basal-like phenotype, up to one third are ER positive (ER+). Little is known about the characteristics of this subgroup. To address this, we compared histologic and immunophenotypic features of 60 BRCA1-related ER+ breast cancers with those of 85 BRCA1-related ER- cancers and 174 matched ER+ sporadic cancers. ER+ BRCA1-related cancers were significantly less likely than ER- BRCA1-related cancers to be of pure invasive ductal type (P<0...

BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are rare breast tumors that usually occur in middle-aged women. Here we discuss our recent experiences in the diagnosis, surgical management, and clinical follow-up of this disease. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 164 patients with PTs who underwent surgical treatment at the Department of Surgery, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from January 1995 to July 2009. Clinical and histopathological data were analyzed. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 33...

BACKGROUND: Primary eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare cutaneous neoplasm and there is no consensus concerning its surgical management. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a retrospective analysis of all the cases of eccrine porocarcinoma seen in our hospital in order to identify prognostic factors. METHODS: Clinical data were retrieved from the patients' files. Each histological sample was reviewed by the pathologist and classified into three eccrine porocarcinoma subtypes: 'infiltrative', 'pushing' and 'pagetoid' eccrine porocarcinoma, according to Robson's criteria...

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is thought to be a multifocal disease with sometimes synchronous involvement of various mucosal structures. In this study we aimed to evaluate the potential involvement of the small bowel in patients suffering from gastric MALT lymphoma by analyzing the results of enteroscopy, a technique that allows easy and safe access to the small bowel with the potential for histological assessment of biopsy samples. We have retrospectively evaluated 347 enteroscopies and found nine patients with gastric MALT lymphoma who had undergone push enteroscopy with serial biopsies during staging...

BACKGROUND: Complete tumor resection is the mainstay of treatment for retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS), but the size and quality of surgical margins for radical resection in RPS are unknown. They are believed to be pushing tumors, but recently, aggressive surgical policies leading to multivisceral resection have seemed to suggest better local control compared with simple tumor resection. We analyzed a single-institution series of RPS to provide information useful to surgical decision-making...

Pioneering clinical studies in de novo refractoriness to the anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody trastuzumab have suggested that HER2 gene-amplification can take place also in a basal-like molecular background to generate basal/HER2+ tumors intrinsically resistant to trastuzumab. Here, we first investigated the unique histogenesis of the basal/HER2+ phenotype in breast carcinomas. The presence of basal CK5/CK6 cytokeratin expression in HER2+ tumors revealed a significant overlap in the histological features of HER2+/CK5/6+ and basal-like breast carcinomas...

INTRODUCTION: Most breast cancers that occur in women with germline BRCA1 mutations are estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) and also typically lack expression of progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2 overexpression. We undertook a study to assess the clinical factors that predict for an estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers and to characterize the pathologic features of these tumors. METHODS: Clinical characteristics of BRCA1 carriers with 58 ER+ and 114 ER- first invasive breast cancers were compared...

BACKGROUND: The morphology of the invasive margin in colorectal cancer can be described as either pushing or infiltrative. These phenotypes carry prognostic significance, particularly in node negative disease, and provide an excellent model for the study of invasive behaviour in vivo. METHODS: The marginal edges of 16 stage-matched tumours exhibiting these contrasting growth patterns were microdissected. The extracted mRNA was amplified and hybridised to a 9546 feature oligonucleotide array...

Herein we report 10 cases of a distinctive morphologic variant of schwannoma with predominantly microcystic-reticular morphology and characterize the clinicopathologic spectrum. The age at presentation ranged from 11 to 93 years (median age 63 y). The tumor size ranged from 0.4 to 23 cm (median size 4.3 cm). Five tumors arose in the gastrointestinal tract, most often in the submucosa...

Familial breast carcinomas that are attributable to BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations have characteristic morphologic and immunhistochemical features. BRCA1-associated carcinomas are poorly differentiated infiltrating ductal carcinomas frequently exhibiting morphologic features of typical or atypical medullary carcinomas such as prominent lymphocytic infiltrate and pushing margins. We report on a patient carrying the deleterious BRCA1 germline mutation R1699W, who presented with a malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast...

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of phyllodes tumor of the breast and to compare these findings with the histologic grade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained. The authors reviewed the MR findings in 30 female patients aged 16-73 years (mean, 40.2 years) with surgically confirmed phyllodes tumors. Analyzed MR findings included tumor shape, margin, internal enhancement, and size; signal intensity (SI) of tumor higher than that of normal breast tissue on T1-weighted images; SI of tumor lower than or equal to that of normal tissue on T2-weighted images; cyst wall appearance; kinetic curve assessment; and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

Breast cancers in BRCA1 gene mutation carriers often have specific histologic features: grade III tumors with pushing margins. Our purpose was to compare the mammographic and histologic features of breast cancers in carriers with those in age-matched sporadic controls. The features of breast cancers in 27 BRCA1 carriers found during annual surveillance were compared to those in 107 age-matched sporadic controls. The carriers had no (classic) spiculated mammographic lesions, a high percentage of well-defined masses and hardly any masses with microcalcifications, whereas the controls had significantly fewer well-defined ones and only in 27% spiculated lesions on the mammogram...
