Tuberculosis (TB) has not been eliminated from none of the world's regions up to now. Trends of TB endemic were constantly favorable in Romania in the recent years: number of new cases and relapses decreased with 13 235, incidence rate with 42%, incidence rate in children with 51% and mortality rate with 44%, from 2002 to 2011. The highest TB risk is being observed in men living in rural area and in those of 45-54 age group. The counties with the highest TB incidence rates are those in the South-West part of the country...

OBJECTIVE: We studied the epidemiological characteristic of tuberculosis in Lorca area, drug resistant and the effect of the immigration population (Ecuador) in this area. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study for six years ago (1999, January to 2004, December) was realized. Epidemiological data, initial diagnostic probability, mycobacteria stain and cultive, drug resistance, treatment response, and epidemiological differences between immigrants and spain population were compared...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the in vitro activity of fluoroquinolones against Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium chelonae isolated from outbreaks of infectious keratitis in Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Micobacterial isolates were recovered from infectious keratitis cases related outbreaks that occurred in Brazil after LASIK for myopia. Two outbreaks occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 1998 and 1999, and 3 in São Paulo between 2000 and 2003. All laboratorial analysis, including molecular identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing with determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) levels for ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, gatifloxacin, and moxifloxacin, were performed at Universidade Federal de São Paulo in Brazil...

Patients and methods: This is a retrospective study performed on HIV-positive patients discharged from our Institution from January 1993 through December 1998 with a diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia. Cases of TB or atypical micobacterial infection were excluded from this analysis. Causative organisms were identified, when possible, by taking into account positive cultures from diverse sources (blood, sputum, pleural fluid and others). Results: In the 6-yr period we considered, 120 patients were identified. Among them, we were able to obtain clinical and imaging data on 98 cases...

REVIEW

Paratuberculosis is a chronic, progressive disease of mainly ruminants caused by the facultative intracellular bacterium, Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Infection usually occurs in young animals through oral uptake of food contaminated with the organisms. The ingested bacteria are transcytosed through M-cells overlying the Peyer's patches and are released in the stroma, where they are taken up by macrophages. Inside the macrophage, the mycobacteria resist enzymatic and toxic degradation and multiply until the infected macrophage ruptures...
