Incidence of psychosis varies geographically due to factors such as social disadvantage. Whether this influences the clinical presentation and/or engagement of those experiencing psychosis remains relatively understudied. This study analysed data from young people across Australia accessing ultra-high risk (UHR) or first episode psychosis (FEP) services delivered through the headspace Early Psychosis (hEP) program between June 2017 and March 2021. The cohort was categorised into low, middle, and high tertiles of social disadvantage using the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Disadvantage (IRSD)...

BACKGROUND: The economic shutdown and school closures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively influenced many young people's educational and training opportunities, leading to an increase in youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET) globally and in Canada. NEET youth have a greater vulnerability to mental health and substance use problems, compared to their counterparts who are in school and/or employed. There is limited evidence on the association between COVID-19 and NEET youth...

Cell Penetrating Peptides (CPPs) are promising anticancer and antimicrobial drugs. We recently reported that a peptide derived from the human mitochondrial/ER membrane-anchored NEET protein, Nutrient Autophagy Factor 1 (NAF-1; NAF-144-67 ), selectively permeates and kills human metastatic epithelial breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), but not control epithelial cells. As cancer cells alter their phenotype during growth and metastasis, we tested whether NAF-144-67 would also be efficient in killing other human epithelial breast cancer cells that may have a different phenotype...

PURPOSE: This paper seeks to understand the role of an innovative Employability Programme on developing the resilience of young people Not in Education Training or Employment (NEET). METHOD: Through a mixed-method approach, this paper explores the individual, contextual, and social aspects that impact on individual resilience. Combining the Child and Youth Resilience Measure-Revised (CYRM-R) with qualitative interviews allows for the investigation of how context, relationships, and support shape young people's resilience offering a holistic approach...

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent malignancy, with high mortality rate and unavailability of accurate therapies. However, its early prevention remains a challenge. In the purview of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM), it is paramount to identify novel and powerful biomarkers. CISD2 is a crucial regulator of iron homeostasis and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Recent studies showed that the NEET protein (NAF-1) encoded by CISD2 is involved in regulating the proliferation and metastasis of tumor cells...

METHODS: A national cohort study of 23 5295 males and 227 792 females born between 1981 and 1987. SUD was assessed between ages 17 and 24 years. The cytochrome c oxidase complex (Complex IV) of the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii ETC is more than twice the mass and contains subunits not found in human Complex IV, including a 13 kDa protein termed TgApiCox13. TgApiCox13 is homologous to a human iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster-containing protein called the mitochondrial inner NEET protein (HsMiNT) which is not a component of Complex IV in humans...

After Fontan operation, decreased venous capacitance and venoconstriction are adaptive mechanisms to maintain venous return and cardiac output. The consequent higher venous pressure may adversely impact end-organ function, exercise capacity and result in worse clinical outcomes. This pilot study evaluated the safety and effect of isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), a venodilator, on exercise capacity, peripheral venous pressure (PVP), and liver stiffness in patients with Fontan circulation. In this prospective single-arm trial, 15 individuals with Fontan circulation were evaluated at baseline and after 4 weeks of therapeutic treatment with ISDN...

Youth unemployment is a problem that undermines young people's health and well-being and is also a concern for their immediate communities and society. Although it is widely accepted that human beings have an ingrained 'need to belong,' there seem to be a substantial subset of young people who seclude themselves for most of the time at home and no longer engage in education or work, ultimately withdrawing from participation in society. In Japan, this phenomenon has been labeled as 'hikikomori,' but given its global presence it may be preferable to use the term 'extreme social withdrawal' (ESW). In this qualitative review, we provide a description and definition of ESW, provide figures on its prevalence, and discuss a number of associated concepts, including loneliness and "aloneliness," school absenteeism and dropout, the 'new' developmental stage of adultolescence, and the labor force categories of freeter ('freelance arbeiter') and NEET (a young person not in employment, education, or training)...

Mental health challenges in adolescence may affect labour market transitions in young adulthood. Policies addressing early labour market disconnection largely focus on early school-leaving and educational attainment; however, the role of low educational attainment on the path from adolescent mental health to labour market disconnection is unclear. Using the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey from the Netherlands (n = 1,197), we examined the extent to which achieving a basic educational qualification (by age 22) in the contemporary Dutch education system, mediates the effect of adolescent mental health (age 11-19) on early adult labour market disconnection, defined as 'not in education, employment, or training' (NEET, age 26)...

Human NEET proteins contain two [2Fe-2S] iron-sulfur clusters, bound to three Cys residues and one His residue. They exist in two redox states. Recently, these proteins have revealed themselves as attractive drug targets for mitochondrial dysfunction-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, Wolfram syndrome 2, and cancers. Unfortunately, the lack of information and mechanistic understanding of ligands binding to the whole functional, cytoplasmatic domain has limited rational drug design approaches. Here, we use an enhanced sampling technique, volume-based metadynamics, recently developed by a team involving some of us, to predict the poses and affinity of the 2-benzamido-4-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2-yl)-thiophene-3-carboxylate ligand to the entire surface of the cytoplasmatic domain of the human NEET protein mitoNEET (mNT) in an aqueous solution...
