BACKGROUND: Recent studies investigating fracture development in Germany are not available especially with regard to demographic change. The primary aim of this study was to report trends in fracture development of the upper extremity in Germany between 2002 and 2017 and to evaluate changes over time. METHODS: Evaluating inpatient data from the German National Hospital Discharge Registry (International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10) between 2002 and 2017. Total count, incidences and percentage changes of the following fracture localizations were analysed: proximal humerus, distal humerus, proximal ulna, proximal radius, ulna diaphysis (including Monteggia lesion) and distal radius...

Background and objectives : There are various methods in the management of forearm fractures in children. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing using Titanium Elastic Nail (TEN) is nowadays employed in diaphysis fractures of children, with clear benefits over other treatment options. However, in the case of TEN versus other treatment methods of forearm fractures in children, cost is an important issue. This report will focus on the cost assessment of using TEN versus other therapeutic means in the treatment of forearm fractures in children...

PURPOSE: Repeat intervention for pediatric forearm fractures after closed manipulation is as high as 46% with flexed elbow (FE) long-arm casts. Casting with the elbow extended (EE) has been advocated as an alternative technique. We documented outcomes of patients treated with closed manipulation and casting with EE long-arm casts for displaced, diaphyseal both-bone forearm fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed charts for patients who had sedated manipulations and casting for closed, diaphyseal forearm fractures...

Atypical fractures commonly arise in the subtrochanteric region or the femoral shaft, whereas those of the upper extremities are rare. Only 15 fractures in 13 patients have been described in the English literature. The management of such fractures has not been established. We describe a patient with an atypical fracture of the ulnar diaphysis, which required revision surgery to achieve the union of the fracture site. Teriparatide together with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound contributed to bone healing. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal strategy for treating atypical fractures of the ulna...

Introduction: Both-bone forearm fractures in children can be treated non-operatively with a cast. Most previous studies have shown favourable outcome; however, information on the functional outcome after skeletal maturity is still scanty. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the functional outcome after skeletal maturity in fractures with at least four years of growth remaining. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted from March 2012 until March 2013. Age at the time of fracture was taken as until 10 years for females and until 12 years old for males with at least four years of growth remaining...

The aim of the study was to see the effectiveness of locking compression plate (LCP) in wedge fracture of diaphysis of radius and ulna in adults. This prospective descriptive case series study inducted total 45 patients presenting with wedge fracture (AO Type, 22-B) of radius and/or ulna. The treatment outcome of these patients were monitored for 24 weeks in 8 visits. Presence or absence of radiological union was noted. The functional outcome was evaluated in terms of Disability of Arm, Shoulder and hand (DASH) score and Grace and Eversmann criteria...

INTRODUCTION: Diaphyseal fractures of the forearm comprise 6%-10% of all fractures in children. The treatment depends on the age and type of displacement, and conservative and surgical management with fixation of intramedullary nails, among other techniques, is valid. The aim is to show the radiological and functional outcomes, and complications of intramedullary fixation with Kirschner nails in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective descriptive case series of patients treated with intramedullary fixation of forearm fractures...

BACKGROUND: There are easily accessible tools on smartphones (APP) for measuring elbow range of motion (ROM). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of a particular APP in determining elbow ROM in comparison with the commonly used goniometer (GON), surgeon estimation of range (EST) and measurement on X-ray (XR). METHODS: The study included 20 patients (40 elbows). Flexion, extension, pronation and supination were measured using three different methods: EST, GON and APP...

Small animal models, and especially transgenic models, have become widespread in the study of bone mechanobiology and metabolic bone disease, but test methods for measuring fracture toughness on multiple replicates or at multiple locations within a single small animal bone are lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a method to measure cortical bone fracture toughness in multiple specimens and locations along the diaphysis of small animal bones. Arc-shaped tension specimens were prepared from the mid-diaphysis of rabbit ulnae and loaded to failure to measure the radial fracture toughness in multiple replicates per bone...

PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient was a 71-year-old female who previously fell and hit her left hand on the ground. At 2 years after injury the patient visited our hospital, since she became aware of instability of the left forearm without an inducer due to nonunion of the radioulnar diaphysis. INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a major health problem worldwide. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is often secondary to some primary foci in lungs. There are reports of tuberculous osteomyelitis involving maxilla, ulna, femur, and shoulder joint but none have reported pathological fracture in humeral diaphysis due to tuberculosis osteomyelitis without shoulder joint involvement. We report a case of pathological fracture of humerus diaphysis due to tuberculous osteomyelitis with normal articular space...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We present a rare case of stress fracture of the diaphysis of the ulna in a softball pitcher. CASE: A thirteen-year-old girl felt pain over the distal third of the right forearm during pitching. Stress fracture was detected as callus formation of the ulna before fracture displacement. When windmill pitching for softball, the pitcher rotates their arm around the shoulder joint and powerfully hits their forearm to their thigh, which is accompanied by simultaneous pronation of the forearm and flexion of the wrist...

Monteggia fractures are accepted as hard-to-recognize and easy-to-handle fractures. Adequate radiographic investigations and clinical examinations are necessities. This case holds unique features involving diagnosis and treatment. In this case, the radial head was dislocated laterally while both bones were fractured in the proximal diaphysis, being the first to be mentioned in the literature. Closed reduction of the ulna is the preferred method of handling and almost always results in reduction of the radial head...

PURPOSE OF STUDY: Fractures of the distal radius and distal ulna require anatomical reconstruction for good restoration of wrist and hand function. Our objective was to specify indications for plate osteosynthesis of a distal ulna fracture in the case of an associated distal radius fracture...

OBJECTIVE: Intramedullary nailing is the preferred surgical treatment of humerus shaft fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the bicipital groove and specific anatomical landmarks in achieving correct alignment of the humerus during intramedullary nailing, and to describe these anatomical landmarks. METHODS: Thirty (15 right; 15 left) total upper cadaver extremities were used in this study. After the anatomical landmarks were identified and marked, humeral head axis, transepicondylar axis, ulnar shaft axis, bicipital groove axis, and angular measurements of these were obtained...
