BACKGROUND: Alopecia Areata (AA) is an acquired autoimmune form of non-scarring hair loss. Adiponectin and its gene polymorphism were related to many autoimmune disorders. OBJECTIVE: Assessment of adiponectin serum levels and adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) (rs2241766) Single Nucleoid Polymorphism (SNP) in AA patients and correlating the results with the disease severity in those patients. METHODS: This study included 75 AA patients and 75 age and gender-matched healthy subjects (controls)...

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that particular parenting behaviors (e.g., elevated psychological control) may increase risk for both problematic social anxiety and alcohol use among youth; however, no work has yet examined these factors together in a single model. Building developmentally-sensitive models of problematic alcohol use trajectories is key to developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. METHOD: The present study includes 94 adolescents (ages 14-17 years; 53...

OBJECTIVES: Teledentistry has been used in many dental specialties including temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Studies have measured patients' experience with teledentistry visits. Thus, this study aimed to assess the experience of patients seen using teledentistry compared to the traditional Orofacial Pain (OFP) and TMD visits. METHODS: An interventional study was conducted on 25 patients following up at the TMD clinic. The first follow-up occurred in person at the hospital clinic, where patients were given a survey at the end of the visit...

Pyogenic spondylodiscitis is an uncommon bacterial infection of the intervertebral disc and the vertebral endplates. It usually affects elderly patients with comorbidities but may be also seen after surgical procedures in young patients, mostly after spinal interventions and genitourinary procedures. This article describes a rare case of pyogenic spondylodiscitis in a young female patient after a cesarean section without spinal anesthesia. The patient presented with a three-month history of lower back pain, and the inflammatory markers were elevated...

BACKGROUND: Septic pulmonary embolism (SPE), deep vein thrombophlebitis (DVT), and acute osteomyelitis (AOM) form a triad that is rarely seen in children and is usually associated with a history of trauma on long bones. Unfortunately, a delay in diagnosis is frequently observed in this syndrome, which places the patient at risk of life-threatening complications. This delay can largely be attributed to the failure to consider osteomyelitis as a potential underlying cause of DVT. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we present the case of a 16-year-old Arabian male who presented with limb trauma and fever...

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial infections or hospital-acquired infections are a growing public health threat that increases patient morbidity and mortality. Patients at the highest risk are those in intensive care units. Therefore, our objective was to provide a pattern analysis of nosocomial infections that occurred in an adult surgical intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: This study was a retrospective observational study conducted in a 6-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at An-Najah National University Hospital (NNUH) to detect the incidence of nosocomial infections from January 2020 until December 2021...

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disturbances, and problematic alcohol use are frequently comorbid. The current study examined the number and nature of different subgroups of trauma-exposed college students based on endorsed PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbances; and how such subgroups relate to drinking to cope motives...

Adrenal ganglioneuromas are mostly asymptomatic, although they may manifest with compressive local effects. We present a 27-year-old man with no medical history who was referred to the surgical oncology clinic due to the incidental finding of a left adrenal mass. The initial computed tomography (CT) abdomen revealed a large mass causing displacement of adjacent organs. A CT-guided biopsy was inconclusive, and further evaluation with an NM endo-adrenal (MIBG) medullary scan pointed to a possible diagnosis of pheochromocytoma...

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CREs) are a significant source of healthcare-associated infections. These bacteria are difficult to treat and have a high mortality rate due to high rates of antibiotic resistance. These pathogens are also linked to major outbreaks in healthcare institutions especially those with limited resources in infection prevention and control (IPC). Therefore, our study aimed to describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of patients with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in a referral hospital in a developing country...

Disulfiram and hydralazine have recently been reported to have anti-cancer action, and repositioned to be used as adjuvant in cancer therapy. Chemotherapy combined with other medications, such as those that affect the immune system or epigenetic cell profile, can overcome resistance with fewer adverse effects compared to chemotherapy alone. In the present study, a combination of doxorubicin (DOX) with hydrazine (Hyd) and disulfiram (Dis), as a triple treatment, was evaluated against wild-type and DOX-resistant MCF-7 breast cancer cell line...

In hospitals and other clinical settings, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a particularly dangerous pathogen that can cause serious or even fatal infections. Thus, the detection and differentiation of MRSA has become an urgent matter in order to provide appropriate treatment and timely intervention in infection control. To ensure this, laboratories must have access to the most up-to-date testing methods and technology available. This study was conducted to determine whether protein fingerprinting technology could be used to identify and distinguish MRSA recovered from both inpatients and outpatients...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used in food-additives, and the Food and Drug Administration has placed it under intense scrutiny following several reports that it causes glutamate neurotoxicity. Ashwagandha (ASH) roots are traditionally used for memory enhancement. BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is a predominant strategy for breast cancer (BC) treatment and paclitaxel (PTX) has been known as a conventional chemotherapeutic drug. However, insensitivity of BC cells to PTX limits the anti-tumor effects of this agent. MicroRNAs are closely related to BC which are suggested as therapeutic factors in the combination therapy of BC. We examined the possible efficacy of miR-138-5p restoration in combination with PTX to impove BC treatment. METHODS: The human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 was transfected with miR-138-5p mimics and treated with PTX, in a combined or separate manner...
