INTRODUCTION: In testicular torsion, ischemia time from pain onset impacts testicular salvage. A tunica albuginea fasciotomy to relieve compartment pressure followed by a tunica vaginalis flap (TVF) may enhance salvage. OBJECTIVE: To define the optimal window of ischemia time during which TVF may be most beneficial to avoid orchiectomy. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of males presenting with testicular torsion at a single tertiary-care institution from January, 2003 to March, 2017...

Gentamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic commonly used against Gram-negative bacteria. This study was designed to investigate the testicular toxicity of gentamicin in adult rats. Gentamicin was given to rats at 0, 60, 80 or 100 mg/kg/day for 10 consecutive days. The absolute weight of testes reduced significantly in relation to the dose, while gentamicin at a dose of 60 mg/kg did not show any significant change in the relative testes weight. Sperm count and motility and daily sperm production decreased in a dose-related manner...

A prolyl isomerase Pin1 deficient (Pin1-/-) male mice had severe testicular atrophy. We investigated the function of Pin1 in spermatogenesis by analyzing the Pin1-/- mice at reproductive age. Pin1-/- mice had lessαPLZF positive spermatogonia (undifferentiated spermatogonia) than wild type (WT). Nevertheless, the Pin1-/- testis contained approximately the same number of GFRα1 positive spermatogonia (SSCs in steady state) as the WT testis. Furthermore, degeneration of the spermatogenia appeared in seminiferous tubules of 10 months old Pin1-/- mouse testis, and abnormal shape GFRα1 positive spermatogonia were observed...

Background: Testicular torsion is surgical emergency. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of testicular torsion is essential for testicular viability. At surgical exploration, the spermatic cord is seen twisted a variable number of times around its longitudinal axis. There is scant data regarding the degree of twisting and its association with testis outcomes. The purpose of our study is to explore how the degree of torsion factors into testicular outcome using follow-up data. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of adolescent males who presented with testicular torsion to our institution, looking at duration of pain symptoms, degree of torsion documented in the operative note, procedure performed (orchiopexy versus orchiectomy), and follow-up clinic data for whether testicular atrophy after orchiopexy was present...

The effect of treatment with combined butylparaben and triclosan on male gonadal toxicity in weanling rats was investigated. All treated groups experienced atrophy in the ventral prostate and seminal vesicle, likewise significant depletion in the number and motility of sperm. Given individually or combined butylparaben and triclosan, significantly decreased testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone levels. Individual treatment with tested compounds caused significant elevation in the E2 level, whereas combined treatment did not alter the E2 level...

Between November 2011 and November 2014, we performed a tunica albuginea incision with tunica vaginalis flap coverage (TAI+TVFC) on 5 out of 15 patients who underwent surgery for testicular torsion. Of those 15 patients, 7 underwent orchidopexy alone (Group A), 5 underwent TAI+TVFC (Group B), and 3 underwent an orchidectomy procedure (Group C). All were followed for 1 year and preservation of testicular volume >50% on the contralateral side in ultrasound measurements was considered as salvaged. During the follow-up examinations, no testicular atrophy was noted in Group A...

Cadmium (Cd) and its compounds are highly toxic to virtually all organ systems of the mammals. Cd-induced testicular injuries have been reported in various animal species, using different protocols. The self-renewal capacity and the ability to generate different specialized cell types make the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) one of the ideal choices for restoring tissue damages of various etiologies. The use of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) is among the most recent strategies to repair the Cd-induced testicular damage, but empirical studies in this regard are largely missing...

An important potential consequence of the anabolic steroid misuse is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to the inhibition of pituitary secretion of gonadotropins. By the symptoms as testicular atrophy, spermatogenic and fertility disturbances or dysfunction in sexual life, the anabolic steroids induced hypogonadism (ASIH) could be differentiated from organic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism only with difficulty unless the misuse is reported by the user. When diagnosed, the crucial step in the therapy is the stop of anabolic use...

Genitourinary tract injuries account for 3 to 10% of trauma patients, and scrotal trauma is particularly prevalent in males 10 to 30 years of age. Prompt diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are essential to prevent future complications of infertility, delayed orchiectomy, infection, and testicular atrophy. While clinical examination provides valuable information, it may be inconclusive due to soft tissue swelling and difficult to perform due to testicular pain with palpation. Conversely, testicular rupture does not always present with pain or tenderness...
