INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious hypertensive pregnancy disorder and a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Despite the prevalence and complications, there are no approved therapeutics to relieve PE symptoms. Inflammation, oxidative stress, and angiogenic imbalance have been shown to contribute to the PE pathophysiology, though there is a lack of understanding in how best to target these pathways in PE. We recently demonstrated that the bioflavonoid luteolin is a potent inhibitor of the anti-angiogenic and pro-hypertensive soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1), and here we aimed to determine if luteolin was also capable of reducing inflammation and oxidative stress pathways...

OBJECTIVE: Amiodarone (AMD), a drug of choice to treat cardiac arrhythmias, has a narrow therapeutic index (NTI). It inhibits CYP3A4, CYP2C9, and CYP2D6 enzymes. Quercetin (QUE), a pharmacologically important bioflavonoid in vegetables and fruits, is important in treating cardiovascular comorbidities. QUE alters the bioavailability of drugs used concurrently by dual inhibition of P-glycoproteins (P-gp) and cytochrome (CYP) enzyme systems. The current study aimed to investigate the pre-treatment and co-administration effect of QUE on AMD pharmacokinetics in rats...

We studied the effect of a new complex phytocomposition on age-related changes in the composition of biological fluids (blood, lymph, and interstitial fluid) in old (22-24-month-old) white Sprague-Dawley rats. A 3-month course of phytocomposition induced an increase in the volumes of interstitial fluid (IF) and plasma and stimulated lymph outflow and diuresis. In the blood and lymph, the clotting time increased, while the viscosity and all lipid indicators decreased. The phytocomposition increased the number of erythrocytes and leukocytes, the levels of immunoglobulins (except IgG) and lymphocyte subpopulations, which contributed to correction and improvement of the immune properties of the blood and lymph...

Nobiletin (NOB) is a bioflavonoid compound isolated from citrus fruit peels. The present study aimed to elucidate whether NOB facilitates the porcine sperm cryosurvival and embryo development after in vitro fertilization (IVF). To this end, spermatozoa were diluted and cryopreserved in a freezing extender supplemented with 0 (control), 50, 100, 150, and 200 μM Nobiletin. The kinematic patterns of frozen-thawed (FT) sperm were assessed after 30 and 90 min incubation using a Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA)...

The Cerrado biome is the world's largest and most diversified tropical savanna. Despite its diversity, there remains a paucity of scientific discussion and evidence about the medicinal use of Cerrado plants. One of the greatest challenges is the complexity of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, present in those plants and their extraction, purification, and characterization, which involves a wide range of approaches, tools, and techniques. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the search for accurately proven medicinal plants against cancer, a leading cause of death worldwide, has contributed to this growing area of research...

This study investigated the protective activities of pinostrobin (PIN) against methotrexate (MTX)-induced ovarian toxicity. Female rats were administered with PIN (50 mg/kg) for 4 weeks, while MTX was administered from weeks 2-4 of PIN treatment. Serum hormonal profiles, ovarian oxidative stress, inflammatory and apoptotic biomarkers as well as ovarian histomorphometry were evaluated. MTX administration elicited profound deficit in serum progesterone and estrogen (E2) levels, while luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were significantly increased...

Background : Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely utilized and consumed mainly as food additives. Oxidative stress is considered to be the basic effect of TiO2 NPs through biological interactions. Hesperidin (HSP) is a bioflavonoid (flavanone glycoside) with lipid-lowering, inflammation, oxidative stress suppression, antihypertensive, cancer-fighting, and antiedema effects. Objective : This study was to investigate the possible protective influences of HSP of subchronic oral TiO2 NP exposure on the brains of rats, including neurotransmitters, oxidative stress/antioxidant parameters, inflammatory markers, and histological changes in the brains of adult male albino rats...

Parkinson's disease (PD) and other age-related neurodegenerative ailments have a strong link to oxidative stress. Bioflavonoid naringenin has antioxidant properties. The effects of pre- and post-naringenin supplementation on a rotenone-induced PD model were examined in this work. Naringenin (50 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered to rats for two weeks before the administration of rotenone in the pre-treatment phase. Bioflavonoids are natural polyphenolic secondary metabolites that are medicinal. These compounds possess antitumor, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-psoriasis properties to mention a few. Plant species that contain bioflavonoids should be preserved as such. Also, the bioactivity of the bioflavonoids as neutraceutical compounds is compromised following extraction due to their sensitivity to environmental factors like light, pH, and temperature. In other words, the bioflavonoids' shelf-life is affected...

As colorectal cancer (CRC) usually presents at an advanced stage, it responds poorly to traditional surgery and chemoradiotherapy. Therefore, quercetin in combination with N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), a well-known anti-oxidant and adjuvant agent in cancer-chemotherapeutic drugs, was considered as a way of increasing treatment efficacy...
