BACKGROUND: Central Nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-Tb) is the most lethal form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in children. The lack of markers of outcome provides little information on the efficacy of the current treatment protocols for CNS-Tb and thus results in a higher mortality rate than other extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis. This study aims to identify significant factors that will reliably predict the outcomes at discharge in children admitted with CNS-Tb. METHODS AND MATERIAL: This is a prospective observational study in children with neurotuberculosis admitted at a tertiary care hospital...

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is an important disease leading to morbidity, disability and mortality that primarily affects children and immune-depressed patients. Specific neuromarkers predicting outcomes, severity and inflammatory response are still lacking. In recent years an increasing number of evidences show a possible role for infective agents in developing neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively included 13 HIV-negative patients presenting with TBM and we compared them with two control groups: one of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of AD, and one of those with syphilis where lumbar punctures excluded central nervous system involvement...

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis in adults is well characterized in Vietnam, but there are no data on the disease in children. We present a prospective descriptive study of Vietnamese children with TBM to define the presentation, course and characteristics associated with poor outcome. METHODS: A prospective descriptive study of 100 consecutively admitted children with TBM at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. Cox and logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with risk of death and a combined endpoint of death or disability at treatment completion...

The progress of genomic analysis in mycobacterium including M. tuberculosis (Mtb) allowed us to find Mtb-specific antigens, ESAT-6 and CFP-10, which induce strong interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) from sensitized T cells. Shortly after discovery of these antigens, diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB) infection were developed using these antigens. Since ESAT-6 and CFP-10 are absent from all BCG substrains and most of non-tuberculous mycobacterium, these diagnostic tests are not confounded with BCG vaccination and infection of most of non-tuberculosis mycobacterium...

OBJECTIVES: Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) were measured serially in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum in twenty five cases of meningitis and an equal number of age and sex matched healthy control subjects with an aim to find out their diagnostic and prognostic significance in cases of meningitis. METHODS: The enzymatic activity was measured serially (day 0, 4th and 7th) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum in twenty-five cases of meningitis consisting of fifteen cases of pyogenic meningitis (PM) and ten of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and an equal number of age and sex matched healthy control...

BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus is a common complication of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). AIM: To study the incidence, associated clinical features, and impact on outcome of hydrocephalus at presentation in TBM. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: Regional hospital serving 500,000 people. METHODS: Adult patients with TBM were studied over 57 months. Those with hydrocephalus on initial CT scan were assessed by neurosurgeons...
