Prior research suggests that several endogenous hormones in premenopausal women are associated with breast cancer risk; however, few studies have evaluated associations of endogenous hormones with mammographic density (MD) in premenopausal women. We conducted a cross-sectional study of plasma hormone levels in relation to MD among 634 cancer-free premenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study II. We measured percent MD from screening mammograms using a computer-assisted method. We assayed estradiol, estrone, and estrone sulfate in blood samples timed in early follicular and mid-luteal phases of the menstrual cycle as well as testosterone, androstenedione, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulfate, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and anti-Müllerian hormone in luteal or untimed samples...

A strong positive association has been observed between circulating anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a biomarker of ovarian reserve, and breast cancer risk in three prospective studies. Confirming this association is important because of the paucity of biomarkers of breast cancer risk in premenopausal women. We conducted a consortium study including ten prospective cohorts that had collected blood from premenopausal women. A nested case-control design was implemented within each cohort. A total of 2,835 invasive (80%) and in situ (20%) breast cancer cases were individually matched to controls (n = 3,122) on age at blood donation...

OBJECTIVE: Women with type 1 diabetes have increased risk of infertility compared to women without diabetes even after adjustment for irregular menses, but etiologies are incompletely understood. Our aim was to examine the prevalence of abnormalities in ovarian markers consistent with polycystic ovary syndrome in women with type 1 diabetes and associations with irregular menses and diabetes-specific variables. DESIGN, PATIENTS, AND MEASUREMENTS: We conducted a secondary analysis of women in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study (DCCT/EDIC), a randomized trial and observational follow-up of intensive insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes...

BACKGROUND: A recent report described a new PCOS-like phenotype in lean older infertile women, and was characterized by high age-specific anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) but hypo- rather than the expected hyper-androgenism. The hypo-androgenism was, furthermore, characterized of, likely, adrenal origin and autoimmune etiology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We extracted data on 708 consecutive infertility patients, and separated them into three age-strata, <35, 36-42, and >42 years...

PURPOSE: In recent years, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) has been considered a reliable index of ovarian reserve. There are few data on AMH values in thyroid cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate AMH levels in pre-menopausal women with a history of low-risk thyroid cancer. METHODS: Thirty-four women (aged 40.7 ± 6.7 years) were studied 7.1 ± 0.9 years after surgery and at least one RAI treatment. A group of 23 thyroid cancer women (41.6 ± 7...

AIM: Thyroid dysfunction and autoimmunity are associated with an adverse effect on fertility. An aberrant high thyroid stimulating hormone level is associated with diminished ovarian reserve in women of reproductive age; however, the utility of levothyroxine (LT4) replacement for infertile patients with subclinical hypothyroidism is still under discussion. The aim of this study was to investigate whether LT4 supplementation for infertile patients with subclinical hypothyroidism improves impaired ovarian function...

Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare type of male pseudohermaphroditism caused by a deficiency in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) or a defect in its type II receptor. The current study reports the clinical data and results of the genetic analysis of a 17-month-old male diagnosed with PMDS. The clinical manifestations of the patient included a left transverse testicular ectopia and bilateral cryptorchidism. Pelvic ultrasonography indicated two testes on the same left inguinal ring and left inguinal hernia and uterine tissue located at the left rear of the bladder...

The intense selection of characteristics related to animal performance may affect the reproductive efficiency of beef cows negatively. Selection for fertility along with production traits is, therefore, readily justifiable. The objective of the present study was to evaluate possible relationships among AFC, serum AMH concentrations and external morphometrics with reproductive efficiency in Tabapuã (a Brazilian Bos indicus beef breed) females. Antral follicle counts and external morphometrics were measured in nulliparous (n = 162), primiparous (n = 80) and multiparous (n = 351) cows, from four farms...

Environmental pollution is one of the main factors responsible for reducing fertility in males. Lead is one of the major heavy metal contaminants that impairs several organs; it preferentially accumulates in male reproductive organs and alters sperm quality both in vivo and in vitro. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Sertoli cells (SCs) provide structural and physiological support to spermatogenic cells within seminiferous tubules. Therefore, changes in SCs affect the developing germ cells and alter spermatogenesis...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Male patients with end-stage renal disease suffer from sexual disturbances and infertility. Disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis are one of the causes of this. Decreased testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells of the testes and hyperprolactinemia are common. Kidney transplantation, unlike hemodialysis, normalizes these changes. However, how kidney transplantation affects Sertoli cell function is poorly understood. This study is aimed at investigating the changes in fertility-related hormones in men before, during, and after renal transplantation...

The lack of clinically-reliable biomarkers makes impossible to predict sperm retrieval outcomes at testicular sperm extraction (TESE) in men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), resulting in up to 50% of unnecessary surgical interventions. Clinical data, hormonal profile and histological classification of testis parenchyma from 47 white-Caucasian idiopathic NOA (iNOA) men submitted to microdissection TESE (microTESE) were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses tested potential clinical predictors of positive sperm retrieval...

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported a correlation between antral follicle count by conventional 2D transvaginal sonography and serum anti-Müllerian hormone levels. However, few studies have investigated the effectiveness of 3D SonoAVC transvaginal ultrasound technology, particularly in infertile women. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) SonoAVC transvaginal ultrasound technology for antral follicle count and its correlation to conventional two-dimensional (2D) transvaginal ultrasound and serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone in infertile women...

Müllerian inhibiting substance, also called anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of AMH type II receptor-positive tumor cells, such as human ovarian cancers (OCs). On this basis, a humanized glyco-engineered monoclonal antibody (3C23K) has been developed. The aim of this study was therefore to experimentally confirm the therapeutic potential of 3C23K in human OCs. We first determined by immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and cytofluorometry analyses the expression of AMHRII in patient's tumors and found that a majority (60 to 80% depending on the detection technique) of OCs were positive for this marker...

BACKGROUND: There are very few biomarkers available to diagnose cases with premature ovarian failure. Some complete blood count parameters have been introduced to be diagnostic biomarkers for several disorders associated with inflammatory process. Due to the evidence that indicated chronic inflammatory process to be underlying pathophysiology in premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), we aimed to assess the predictive value of complete blood count parameters for POI diagnosis. METHOD: A total of 96 women diagnosed to have premature ovarian failure were compared with 110 otherwise healthy women in terms of some basal hormone levels and complete blood count parameters...

BACKGROUND: Antral follicle count (AFC) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) are known as the most reliable markers of a woman's ovarian reserve and are related to age. There is currently no specific local age-related centile charts for AFC and AMH. Therefore, we aim to examine the relationship between AFC and AMH with age and construct age-related nomograms among a subfertile Asian population. METHODS: This is a study involving Chinese women who had their AFC and AMH measured as part of their subfertility screening from December 2010 until November 2014 in KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore...
