Acute fluid consumption (approximately 1 L) has been shown to reduce urine specific gravity (Usg) among subjects after an overnight fast, yet it is unknown if Usg may be reduced among subjects who have experienced exercise-induced fluid loss. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of acute fluid consumption on Usg, body mass, percent body fat (%BF), and minimum wrestling weight (MWW) following an exercise-induced fluid loss protocol. National Collegiate Athletic Association coaches' perceptions of the weight certification program (WCP) were also evaluated...

BACKGROUND: The concept of Focused Assessment with Ultrasound for Trauma (FAST), which was introduced by Rozycki et al. in 1996, has started a new era in the management of trauma patients. Today, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) suggests bedside ultrasonography (USG) evaluation of trauma patients. We aimed to investigate the usability and the reliability of handheld ultrasound (Vscan) in determining free fluid during the initial evaluation of trauma patients. METHODS: This was a multi-center, prospective study involving multiple trauma patients who presented to three hospital emergency departments (EDs)...

INTRODUCTION: The present concept in our healthcare system is that medical care should be given on an outpatient basis with hospitalization occurring only when essential. We therefore put forth the development of the "all in one" outpatient office or "high resolution" outpatient clinic. For such purpose we administered a questionnaire to various Andalusian hospitals to define and determine those aspects necessary in the development of the aforementioned outpatient office. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The questionnaire was filled out by 10 Andalusian hospitals...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We compared the results of treatment of gallbladder stones by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy with dissolution during two periods to different criteria of indication. In the first period (1990-1991) we treated patients with stones up to 3 cm in diameter. In the second period (1992-1994) the indication included stones up to 1.5 cm with gallbladder contraction on cholecystography, which was also quantitatively determined by USG exceeding 60% of fasting volume. METHODS: We used Czech made lithotriptors MEDILIT...
