BACKGROUND: The rapid change in the socio-demographic pattern and changing beliefs toward fertility and birth spacing have resulted in a notable increase in the use of oral anticonceptives in the Saudi Arabian community. However, information on the current utilization of oral anticonceptives and attitudes toward their use remains sparse. OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the utilization pattern of oral anticonceptives, attitude toward pill use, and incidence of side effects among Saudi women...

Hormonal contraception has recently drawn the attention of both national and international Health Organizations mainly because of new data on the risk of venous and arterial thrombosis. This has, fortunately, not led to a 'pill scare' as happened in 1996 when controversy arose with respect to the thrombotic risk of third versus second -generation pills. This time, evidence on the thrombotic risk of pills with the newer progestogens is gathering, -leading to a re-evaluation of guidelines. In this paper, we summarize this evidence and try to present a clinician's view of the indications and contraindications of hormonal contraception and situate them in the perspective of the numerous non-contraceptive health benefits of hormonal contraception...

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has an annual incidence of 0.2% in the urban population. First episodes of calf vein thrombosis (CVT) and proximal DVT are frequently elicited by risk factors, including varicose veins, cancer, pregnancy/postpartum, oral contraceptives below the age of 50 years, immobility or surgery. Leg pain and tenderness in the calf and popliteal fossa on physical examination may result from other conditions than DVT labeled as alternative diagnosis (AD) Congenital venous thrombophilia is present in every third first DVT, increased FVIII in every fourth first DVT, and FV Leiden/FII mutation in 40% of women on oral anticonceptive pill before reaching the menopause...

The aim of this survey was to examine the number of abortion applicants not using contraception at the time of conception, to shed light on the reasons for this, and to acquire information about the knowledge of postcoital anticonception in this patient group. The registered data is collected from precoded medical records at the University Hospital of Trondheim comprising 2,074 women applying for abortion in the period 1.1. 1995-15.7. 1997. The 291 applying for abortion 15.1-15.7. 1997, and who had not used contraception were given a questionnaire...

The coagulation inhibitor protein S is a cofactor for the protein C, which inactivates the factors V and VIII. In very rare cases a congenital or acquired protein S deficiency leads to a cerebral sinus or venous thrombosis. Guided by an own case report the other 15 cases of the literature are described. In most cases there was a thrombosis of the sinus sagittalis superior. Usually the active form, which is not bound to protein in plasma, is reduced. Women are more frequently involved than men. Partly there are additional risk factors to inheritance, such as pregnancy, puerperium or anticonceptive pills...

It is discussed how the adult type contraception fits the divergent needs of the youngsters. Oral contraceptives are suitable from the 16th year of life. Vaginal globuli and foams have also proved to be an effective means of contraception over that period of life. For anatomical reasons pessaries are not recommended, insertion of intrauterine devices is contraindicated because of their possible adverse effects. Experiences with university students taking d-Norgestrel as "morning-after-pill" have been favorable...
