Propolis is a potent antioxidant and a free radical scavenger. The present study aimed to investigate protective effects of propolis extract on cadmium-induced testicular damage, apoptosis, HIF-1α expression and toxicity in rat's testis tissue. A total of 32 male rats were equally divided into four study groups namely, control, Cd (1mg/kg/day), Cd+propolis (50mg/kg/day) and propolis. The rats were decapitated under ketamine anesthesia and their testes tissues were removed. Serum testosterone, tissue malondialdehyde and HIF-1α levels, HIF-1α expression, apoptosis and histopathological damage scores were then compared...

Incidences of opportunistic infections of the epididymus and the testicule have already been reported in patients suffering from AIDS for over 10 years. Here we have reported the first description of microsporadic orchiepididymitis diagnosed at the university hospital (CHU) of Nice in 2005. We look at the epidemiology, the physiology and the treatment of this extremely rare infection.

Adult Moroccan rams of two different genotypes were compared on the basis of seasonality, fertility and sensitivity to gonadal feedback on the pituitary and hypothalamus. One breed with less seasonal breeding and high fertility, D'Man and one with less fertility and marked seasonal variation in breeding behaviour, Bnihsen. Four animals in each genotype were hemicastrated and 9 mo later castrated, to examine the effect of hormonal control on the hypothalamo-hypophyseal feedback system. Nine months after hemicastration the D'Man breed showed higher gonadotrophine values (LH, FSH)...

The scrotum is frequently imaged on an emergent basis. The differential diagnosis of the acute scrotum can be divided into four categories-torsion, trauma, tumor, and "testiculitis" (epididymo-orchitis). Although testicular neoplasms are not imaged emergently, 15% are detected incidentally when performing an emergent scrotal ultrasound. Therefore, the emergent sonographic examination of the testicles should include a thorough search for malignancy. Images demonstrating the sonographic and color Doppler appearances of each of the "four T's" will be reviewed...

The widely accepted concept, stating that insects have no true sex hormones, and that primary as well as secondary sex characteristics are controlled by the genetic inventory of each single cell, is challenged by the report of Naisse, J. The necessity of establishing of monitored donor's genetic bank in Bulgaria is of exceptional necessity at the moment, when health care in our country is in reorganization and is set on a new base. Our studies were directed towards the organization of bank for cryopreservation of spermatozoa taken of: Donor's genetic material for the needs of obstetric and gynaecological laboratories From men that are expected to go through an X-ray or chemical treatment because of tumors or are planned for operation of the testicules...

Most of the basic data regarding the effect of radiation on the testis are issued from animal studies. They demonstrate the extreme radiosensitivity on the germ cell lineage but little is known about the reversible or definitive aspects of these radiation induced effects. In man, the late non stochastic effects of radiation to the testicule are mainly related to persisting spermatogenesis disturbances or/and hormone related problems. Morphological, physiological, radiobiological specificities of the human testis along with numerous parameters depending on radiation conditions make it difficult to evaluate the late effects and radiation tolerance doses...

POEMS syndrome has been defined as an association of plasma cell dyscrasia with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein and skin changes. Although certain authors do not distinguish this syndrome from osteosclerosing myeloma, syndromes comparable to POEMS have been observed without bone lesions. Others have described the clinical features involved under the terms of Crow-Fukase's syndrome, PEP syndrome (pigmentation, oedema, plasma cell dyscrasia, or Takatsuki's syndrome. Seen in men twice as often as in women, usually between the ages of 40-50 years, all five clinical features are not always present or may be accompanied by other signs...

OBJECTIVE: It is now possible to achieve prolonged remission of malignant lymphoma and certain cancers with high-dose chemotherapy followed by autograft with haematopoietic stem cells. We tested such a protocol, evaluating haematologic recovery, in order to determine the total cost of hospitalization. METHODS: Sixteen patients were included in the study, 7 had severe or relapsing lymphoma, 7 had breast cancer or cancer of the ovary and 2 had cancer of the testicule...

Epidermoid cyst of the testis is a benign tumour. It is not rare since between 1971 and 1980, 6 were found amongst 54 tumours of the testicule in the Rennes Regional Hospital Centre. The lesion is asymptomatic, causing neither lymphadenopathy nor any laboratory abnormalities. It can be differentiated from a malihgnant tumour only by histopathological examination and treatment may be summarised as orchidectomy.

Effect of various concentrations of a radioprotector S-[N-(3 aminopropyl)-2-aminoethyl] thiophosphoric acid on the activity of prostaglandine synthetase was studied in mouse liver microsomes as well as in the soluble fractions of testicules and brain in vitro. The activity of prostaglandine synthetase was estimated by monitoring the formation of labelled PGF2 alpha and PGE2 from I-14C-arachidonic acid. The radioprotector at concentration 1.66 mg/ml stimulated formation of PGF2 alpha in all the tissues studied...

Single IP injection of high dose (LD 10) of methyl-CCNU administered to sexually mature male mice resulted in severe inhibition of spermatogenesis and reduction in testicular wet weight, without significant changes in plasma testosterone levels, and with hyperplasia of the interstitum, including Leydig cells, in the testis. These effects were temporary, spermatogenesis and testiculer weight recovered 50 days after treatment. Mating of the treated males with normal females demonstrated absolute sterility at 20 days and full recovery at 50 days after treatment...

The size of the testicle (absolute weight, relative weight as the index X, length, and width was measured in 142 late patients aged 17 to 87 a (mean age = 54 a) serving as controls, in 193 deceased patients aged 20 to 81 a (mean age = 47 a) with a history of alcoholism, and in 136 defunct patients aged 30 to 92 a (mean age = 59 a) with cirrhosis. A significant difference in the mean size of the testicles was demonstrated between the cirrhosis group and both the control and alcoholism groups. No statistically significant differences was observed between the control group and the alcoholism group...

The effect of 22:6 omega 3 acid provided by dietary fish oil on the development of germinal tissue of rat testes, fatty acid composition of lipids, and linoleic or alpha-linolenic acid delta 6 desaturation capacity was investigated. Results were compared to those obtained in animals fed methyl palmitate and sunflower seed oil (linoleate). At 7 and 9 weeks of age, development of germinal tissue of animals fed fish oil was normal. The fatty acid composition showed a decrease in 22:5 omega 6 acid content and an increase in 22:6 omega 3 acid in triacylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine...
