The authors present two cases of newborn babies infected by Trichomonas vaginalis (hereafter referred to as T. vaginalis) and suffering from severe congenital breathing difficulties and needing artificial respiration. Microscopic examination of the tracheal discharge revealed characteristically moving, flagellated, pear-shaped unicellular organisms. Cultures on CPLM medium proved the presence of T. vaginalis. During pregnancy the mothers' clinical status was negative and both of them mentioned leukorrhoea of changing intensity...

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy and tolerability of a new matrix patch delivering estradiol (E2 Matrix) at doses of 0.05 and 0.10 mg per day (Estraderm MX 50, 100) in the treatment of moderate to severe postmenopausal symptoms. METHODS: A total of 254 postmenopausal women were randomized to receive treatment with E2 Matrix 0.10 mg (N = 86), E2 Matrix 0.05 mg (N = 82), or placebo (N = 86) in a double-blind, double-dummy fashion for a period of 12 weeks continuously...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
B Dutilh, C Bebear
We have used in routine fluorescein labelled monoclonal antibodies to detect directly C. trachomatis in genital smears from 68 men with urethritis and 32 women with leukorrhoea or cervicitis. We have compared the results with those obtained by culture on cycloheximide treated McCoy cells stained by Giemsa. C. trachomatis was detected in men respectively from 31 per cent of urethral specimens by culture and 29 per cent by direct test and in women from 12 per cent of cervical specimens by culture and 9 per cent by direct test...

Recent research with computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MR) of the brain has revealed a type of tissue change for which no fitting term exists. The change appears as areas of decreased density on CT and changed signals of the white matter in MR images. Because neither a definite pathological change nor a specific clinical deficit has been linked with the CT and MR changes, a designation is required that limits itself to describing the changes themselves. We propose "leuko-araiosis"...

To learn how lipooligosaccharide (LOS) phase variations affect pathogenesis, we studied two male volunteers who were challenged intraurethrally with Neisseria gonorrhoeae that make a single LOS of 3,600 daltons and sequentially followed LOS expression by gonococci as urethritis developed. LOS variation occurred in vivo. Signs and symptoms of gonorrhea began with the appearance of variants making 4,700-dalton LOS that are immunochemically similar to glycosphingolipids of human hematopoietic cells (Mandrell, R...
