BACKGROUND: Mass spectrometry (MS) is producing high volumes of data supporting oncological sciences, especially for translational research. Most of related elaborations can be carried out by combining existing tools at different levels, but little is currently available for the automation of the fundamental steps. For the analysis of MALDI/TOF spectra, a number of pre-processing steps are required, including joining of isotopic abundances for a given molecular species, normalization of signals against an internal standard, background noise removal, averaging multiple spectra from the same sample, and aligning spectra from different samples...

Beclin 1 is a promoter gene for autophagy as well as a key factor for regulating tumor cell growth and death. Allelic deletion of Beclin 1 has been observed in certain triple-negative breat cancer (TNBC) cells, and it might be associated with increased proliferation and invasion in TNBC cells. In this study we investigated the relationship between Beclin 1 expression and prognosis for TNBC patients, as well as the influence on cell growth by Beclin 1 overexpression in different cultural conditions. Beclin 1 expression in TNBC tissues was measured by immunohistochemical staining and correlated with clinicopathologic parameters for TNBC patients...

INTRODUCTION: Sentinel biopsy technique was performed in Europe in 1996.It was a great improvement in the surgical treatment of breast cancer, it decreased the number of patients suffering from early and late morbidity following axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). In our paper we demonstrate the evolution of sentinel biopsy technique (SLNB), as well as the changes in our policy on axillary treatment in line with the European trends. METHODS: The authors of this article give an overview and analyse the relevant literature concerning sentinel lymph node biopsy and data of patients on whom sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed from 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2012...

A Pressure Bed Sensor (PBS) can offer an unobtrusive method for sleep monitoring. This study focuses on the detection of the sleep related breathing disorders using a PBS in comparison to the methods used in a sleep laboratory. A newly developed PCA modeling approach for the eight sensor signals of the PBS is evaluated using the Reduced Respiratory Amplitude Index (RRAI) as a central measure. The method computes the respiration amplitude with the Hilbert transform, and then detects the events based on a 20% amplitude reduction from the baseline signal...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression by targeting mRNAs to trigger either translation repression or mRNA degradation. miR-125b is down-regulated in human breast cancer cells compared with the normal ones except highly metastatic tumor cells MDA-MB-231. However, few functional studies were designed to investigate metastatic potential of miR-125b. In this study, the effects of miR-125b on metastasis in human breast cancer cells were studied, and the targets of miR-125b were also explored...

The nutrition of premature babies is an important issue to improve their short and long-term growth and development. After birth, our target is to achieve the same growth as a foetus of similar gestational age. The recent recommendations insist on the early introduction of enteral and parenteral nutrition, with optimization of protein and energy intakes to avoid the appearance of extra-uterine failure to thrive. The human milk is always the best nutrition for premature babies but it should be adequatly fortified...

An important approach for describing a region is to quantify its structure content. In this paper, the use of functions for computing texture based on statistical measures is described. Six textural features for mammogram images are defined. The segmentation based on these textures would classify the breast tissue under four categories. The algorithm evaluates the region properties of the mammogram image and thereby would classify the image under four important categories based on the intensity level of histograms...

Latest studies on the chemical association of trace elements to large biomolecules and their importance on the bioinorganic and clinical fields are examined. The complexity of the speciation of metal-biomolecules associations in various biological fluids is stressed. Analytical strategies to tackle speciation analysis and the-state-of-the-art of the instrumentation employed for this purpose are critically reviewed. Hyphenated techniques based on coupling chromatographic separation techniques with ICP-MS detection are now established as the most realistic and potent analytical tools available for real-life speciation analysis...
