What clinicians document about patients can have important consequences for those patients. Paternalistic language in patients' health records is of specific ethical concern because it emphasizes clinicians' power and patients' vulnerabilities and can be demeaning and traumatizing. This article considers the importance of person-centered, trauma-informed language in clinical documentation and suggests strategies for teaching students and trainees documentation practices that express clinical neutrality and respect...

INTRODUCTION: In China's aging population, hypertension, aggravated by smoking, constitutes a substantial health concern. However, the effectiveness of the national public health interventions for smoking cessation under the Essential Public Health Services remains unverified. Our aim was to examine smoking prevalence, the proportion of individuals receiving smoking cessation advice, its impact on successful cessation among Chinese hypertensive patients aged ≥45 years, and to discern disparities in the coverage and efficacy of smoking cessation interventions between primary care facilities and hospitals...

AIM: To evaluate disparities in the frequency of scientific activity between medical doctors and nurses in Peru. METHODS: We carried out a secondary data analysis of the National Health Services Users' Satisfaction Survey (ENSUSALUD), 2016. This nationally representative survey evaluates doctors and nurses working in clinical settings. We defined scientific activity as i) having published an original article (journal indexed in Web of Science, Scopus or Medline); and ii) having authored an abstract in a national or international conference...

Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) were successfully synthesized by employing the flame pyrolysis (FP) method, using flaxseed oil as a carbon source. The alcohol reduction method was used to prepare Pd/CNOs and Pd-Sn/CNOs electro-catalysts, with ethylene glycol as the solvent and reduction agent. The metal-nanoparticles were supported on the CNO surface without adjusting the pH of the solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal CNOs with concentric graphite ring morphology, and also PdSn nanoparticles supported on the CNOs...

Bacterial wilt of tomato is a destructive disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum throughout the world. An endophytic actinomycete with antagonistic activity, designated strain LD120T , was isolated from moss ( Physcomitrium sphaericum (Ludw) Fuernr). The biocontrol test demonstrated that co-inoculation by the isolate and the pathogen gave the greatest biocontrol efficiency of 63.6%. Strain LD120T had morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic properties identical to those of members of the genus Streptomyces ...

Thirteen actinobacteria were isolated and tested for their ability to promote growth of plant in vitro and in planta . All isolates were able to produce IAA and siderophores. Six isolates were identified as members of the genus Micromonospora . Five isolates belonged to the genus Streptomyces and one each of Microbispora and Mycobacterium . Micromonospora sp. Oral minoxidil (OM) has been reported to be effective for androgenetic alopecia (AGA). In this retrospective study, we share our experience of using OM for >24 weeks in 12 patients with female AGA (Ludwig scale I-3-III). Twelve women (aged 18-66 years; mean age 36.66 ± 18.79 years) with AGA (Ludwig scale I-3-III) were recruited. The starting dose of minoxidil was 0.50 mg daily; at 3 months, the dose was increased to 1.50 to 2 mg daily. Efficacy outcome measures were evaluated at baseline and after 24 weeks and included global clinical photography, quantitative digital videotrichoscopic assessment and quality-of-life evaluation...

The world currently faces a pandemic due to SARS-CoV-2. Relevant information has emerged regarding the higher risk of poor outcomes in lung cancer patients. As such, lung cancer patients must be prioritized in terms of prevention, detection and treatment. On May 7th, 45 experts in thoracic cancers from 11 different countries were invited to participate. A core panel of experts regarding thoracic oncology care amidst the pandemic gathered virtually, and a total of 60 initial recommendations were drafted based on available evidence, 2 questions were deleted due to conflicting evidence...

The follow up of Representative behavior after elections is imperative for a democratic Representative system, at the very least to punish betrayal with no re-election. Our goal was to show how to follow Representatives' and how to show behavior in real situations and observe trends in political crises including the onset of game changing political instabilities. We used correlation and correlation distance matrices of Brazilian Representative votes during four presidential terms. Re-ordering these matrices with Minimal Spanning Trees displays the dynamical formation of clusters for the sixteen year period, which includes one Presidential impeachment...

A polyphasic taxonomic study was carried out to establish the status of this strain. Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of strain LD22T confirmed the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Actinomadura. BACKGROUND: Europe is currently the most active region in the field of pancreatic islet transplantation, and many of the leading groups are actually achieving similar good outcomes. Further collaborative advances in the field require the standardization of islet cell product isolation processes, and this work aimed to identify differences in the human pancreatic islet isolation processes within European countries. METHODS: A web-based questionnaire about critical steps, including donor selection, pancreas processing, pancreas perfusion and digestion, islet counting and culture, islet quality evaluation, microbiological evaluation, and release criteria of the product, was completed by isolation facilities participating at the Ninth International European Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (EPITA) Workshop on Islet-Beta Cell Replacement in Milan...

One of the promising tools to evaluate collagen in the extracellular matrix is the second-harmonic generation microscopy (SHG). This approach may shed light on the biological behavior of cancers and their taxonomy, but has not yet been applied to characterize collagen fibers in cases diagnosed as invasive breast carcinoma (BC) of histological special types (IBC-ST). Tissue sections from 99 patients with IBC-ST and 21 of invasive breast carcinoma of no special type (IBC-NST) were submitted to evaluation of collagen parameters by SHG...

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumor, associated with poor prognosis. There is a lack of information about the clinical and pathological features related with survival in the Latin American population. METHODS: The MeSO-CLICaP registry identified 302 patients with advanced MPM diagnosed and treated between January 2008 and March 2016. The Cox model was applied to determine the variables associated with survival. A random forest tree model was built to predict the response to first-line chemotherapy among Latin American patients...

Grapes and wine contain phenolics divided into non-flavonoid and flavonoid classes. Yeast modulates the phenolics of wine by adsorption onto yeast cell walls. This may be advantageous for colour and quality. The effect of Torulaspora delbrueckii (654&M2/1) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (VIN13) on phenolics and sensory attributes of Cabernet Franc wines (2012/2013) were evaluated. Spectrophotometric analysis was used to determine the phenolic content. Sensory analysis was conducted by expert tasters to evaluate the wines...

PURPOSE: In lung cancer patients, radiation therapy modifies lung architecture, resulting in functional deterioration, which worsens symptoms and reduces quality of life. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multicenter, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted in a cohort of patients with locally advanced and oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer treated with concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT). A wide array of pulmonary function tests (forced spirometry, body plethysmography, impulse oscillometry, carbon monoxide diffusing capacity, fraction of exhaled nitric oxide, arterial blood gases, and 6-minute walk test) were used to evaluate lung function at baseline; after radiation therapy; and at 6, 12, 24, and 48 weeks after CCRT...

BACKGROUND: A proportion of patients with NSCLC is diagnosed at 40 years or younger. These patients tend to be never-smokers, usually present with stage IV adenocarcinoma, and have somatic genomic alterations.
