In the course of screening for anti-dementia agents from natural products, two beta-secretase (BACE1) inhibitors were isolated from the methanolic extract of Perilla frutescens var. acuta and identified as luteolin (1) and rosmarinic acid (2) with IC50 values of 5.0 x 10(-7) M and 2.1 x 10(-5) M, respectively. They inhibited BACE1 in a non-competitive manner with a substrate in Dixon plots, suggesting that they might bind to either beta-secretase subsite or to another regulatory site. Kivalues of 1 and 2 were 6...

Strategic lesions of the thalamus interfere with cognitive functions and produce complex neuropsychological symptoms. Bilateral, simultaneous thalamic hemorrhages are unusual causes of thalamic dementia. We present clinical, neuropsychological and structural neuroimaging data of a 12-month follow-up period of a patient with bilateral thalamic hemorrhages. After the operation of pancreatitis acuta hemorrhagico-necroticans, the patient developed coma. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) of the brain showed medially situated bithalamic hematomas...

Over the last few years, remarkable progress has been made in diagnosis, severity assessment and treatment as well as in our understanding of the pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis. New treatment modalities and new specific drugs have been introduced and this has led to practical changes in the daily bedside management of patients with acute pancreatitis. Treatment is essentially medical, both for mild and severe disease, and is aimed at reducing abdominal pain, restoring electrolyte and fluid losses, removing the aetiological factor(s), attenuating inflammation and autodigestive processes, as well as preventing local and systemic complications...

Since the year 1989 the authors, surgeons, performed more then 1600 ERCP. In the period of 1992 to 1995 urgent ERCP was indicated in one hundred cases when block of papila Vateri, cholangitis or acute pancreatitis were suspected. Our results in ERCP were: cholangitis with common bile duct stones 14, pancreatitis acuta biliaris 53, pancreatitis acuta nonbiliiaris 28, other diagnosis 1. In 4 cases, ERCP was unsuccessful. Endoscopic papillosphincterotomy (EPS) was indicated in all patients after the successful ERCP with pancreatitis or cholagitis...
