OBJECTIVE: This study was a comparison of the statin therapy protocol issued by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the Ministry of Health's Health Implementation Directive (SUT) in Turkey, performed in order to assess the adequacy of hyperlipidemia treatment indications for primary prevention. METHODS: A total of 582 patients with first acute coronary syndrome were included in the study. Patients with noncritical stenosis observed on coronary angiography or a history of atherosclerotic disease were excluded...

Congestive heart failure (HF) is a morbidity that is increasing worldwide due to the aging population and improvement in (acute) care for patients with cardiovascular diseases. The prognosis for patients with HF is very poor without treatment. Furthermore, (repeated) hospitalizations for cardiac decompensation cause an increasing economic burden. Modern drugs and the consequent implementation of therapeutic recommendations have substantially improved the morbidity and mortality of HF patients. This paper provides an overview of the current pharmacological management of HF patients, based on the 2016 guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)...

AIMS: To assess the prevalence of indication for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced ejection fraction (EF) when recommendations from evolving European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines are considered. METHODS AND RESULTS: Unique patients (n=17 193) with EF ≤39% and key data available for evaluation of CRT indication from the Swedish HF Registry were included. Indication for CRT was defined as either CRT implanted or CRT device absent but fulfilling criteria for class I-IIa recommendations in ESC guidelines published between 2005/2007 and 2016...

BACKGROUND: The European Association of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of acute heart failure (AHF) indicate prompt therapy initiation and performance of relevant investigations as paramount. Specifically, echocardiography prior to treatment is advocated only with hemodynamic instability, and the evaluation of clinical signs of peripheral perfusion and congestion is suggested as guidance for early interventions. Given the growing body of evidence on the diagnostic/monitoring capabilities of bedside ultrasound (including focused cardiac ultrasound, comprehensive echocardiography, lung ultrasound), we discuss the potential benefit of an integrated clinical/ultrasound approach at the very early stages of acute heart failure...

The initial therapy of chronic heart failure is still based on diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta-blockers and in specific cases mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. The new European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines published in 2016 introduced angiotensin-receptor-neprilysin inhibitors, such as sacubitril/valsartan (LCZ 696) as new therapeutic agents in patients with chronic and progressive heart failure. New subgroup analyses for LCZ 696 have been published showing a beneficial effect in the context of various comorbidities, such as renal insufficiency, diabetes and hypotension...

During the ESC congress in September 2016 in Rome, the new ESC guidelines were presented and are now available on the ESC website ( http://www.escardio.org/guidelines ). The new guidelines cover management recommendations on following cardiovascular items: Heart failure, atrial fibrillation, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular prevention. The present document gives a summary of these guidelines and highlights the most important recommendations and changes in the management of these diseases. It will help to increase awareness about the new guidelines and may stimulate to consult the full document for specific items...

The Sixth Joint Task Force of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and Other Societies on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice Guidelines have been published in 2016: greater emphasis has been placed on a population-based approach, on disease-specific interventions and on female-specific conditions, younger individuals and ethnic minorities. The ESC guidelines underscore that a lifetime approach to cardiovascular risk is important as both risk and prevention are dynamic and continuous...

AIMS: The main terminology used to describe heart failure (HF) is based on measurement of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). LVEF in the range of 40-49% was recently defined as HF with mid-range EF (HFmrEF) by the 2016 European Society of Cardiology guidelines. The purpose of our study was to assess the clinical profile and prognosis of patients with HF according to this new classification. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 482 patients referred for HF were retrospectively included over a period of 1 year...

Aim: We compared the 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) and the 2016 European Society of Cardiology/European Atherosclerosis Society (ESC/EAS) guidelines on prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) using different risk prediction models [US Pooled Cohort Equations (US-PCE for any ASCVD) and European Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation system (European-SCORE for fatal ASCVD)] and different statin eligibility criteria. Methods and results: We examined 44 889 individuals aged 40-75 recruited in 2003-09 in the Copenhagen General Population Study, all free of ASCVD, diabetes, and statin use at baseline...

Despite the availability of a number of different classes of therapeutic agents with proven efficacy in heart failure, the clinical course of heart failure patients is characterized by a reduction in life expectancy, a progressive decline in health-related quality of life and functional status, as well as a high risk of hospitalization. New approaches are needed to address the unmet medical needs of this patient population. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is undertaking a revision of its Guideline on Clinical Investigation of Medicinal Products for the Treatment of Chronic Heart Failure...
