Edible berries such as the fruits of black chokeberry ( Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott) and bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus L.) are considered to be rich in phenolic compounds, which are nowadays attracting great interest due to their promising health benefits. The main objective of our study was to investigate, for the first time, their inhibitory properties on Src tyrosine kinase activity, as this enzyme plays an important role in multiple cellular processes and is activated in both cancer and inflammatory cells...

Prunella vulgaris has long been used in traditional medicine and is consumed as a tea in China. Here, the total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations of plants from different geographical regions were measured. It was found that the total phenolic acid concentration ranged from 4.15 to 8.82 g of gallic acid equivalent per 100 g of dry weight (DW), and the total flavonoid concentration was 4.67-7.33 g of rutin equivalent per 100 g DW. Antioxidant activities were measured using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt, and the results ranged from 73...

This study examined the impact of two green extraction techniques in order to maximize the usage and recovery of phenolic compounds from the by-product of the filter tea industry, the so-called ginger herbal dust. The main phenolic compounds extraction was performed by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with the sonication amplitude ranging from 20% to 100%, and the subcritical water extraction (SWE), with the temperature ranging from 120 °C to 220 °C. All obtained extracts were characterized in terms of extraction yield, total phenolic content (TPC), and 6-ginerol, 6-shogaol, and 8-ginerol contents using RP-HPLC-DAD...

A new type of flavored wine was produced by macerating either green tea or black tea into Chardonnay wine and model wine respectively, where the physicochemical properties (pH, titratable acidity, color) were modulated. Significant (p < 0.05) increases of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (assessed by DPPH, FRAP and ABTS assays) were also observed in the tea macerated wines. A total of 160 phenolic and non-phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, where 55 phenolics were newly found in the tea macerated Chardonnay wine...

This study discusses the genetic mutations that have a significant association with economically important traits that would benefit tea breeders. The purpose of this study was to analyze the leaf quality and SNPs in quality-related genes in the tea plant collection of 20 mutant genotypes growing without nitrogen fertilizers. Leaf N-content, catechins, L-theanine, and caffeine contents were analyzed in dry leaves via HPLC. Additionally, the photochemical yield, electron transport efficiency, and non-photochemical quenching were analyzed using PAM-fluorimetry...

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by toxigenic fungi under specific environmental conditions. Fruits, owing to their high moisture content, rich nutrition, and improper harvest or storage conditions, are highly susceptible to various mycotoxins, such as ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), patulin (PAT), Alternaria toxins, etc. These mycotoxins can cause acute and chronic toxic effects (teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity, etc) in animals and humans. Given the high toxicity and wide prevalence of mycotoxins, establishing an efficient analytical method to detect multiple mycotoxins simultaneously in different types of fruits is of great importance...

These hybrid materials served as multifunctional adsorbents enabling simultaneous sorptive removal, sensitive detection, molecular sieve selection, and magnetic separation. In contrast to pristine CNTs, ILs@CNTs demonstrate significantly enhanced adsorption of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs). The complex interactions between ILs@CNTs and PUHs were comprehensively analyzed using a combination of experimental results and theoretical calculations...

Alpha-glucosidase is an important target for glycemic control with the aim of reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Green tea catechins have been reported to inhibit alpha-glucosidase activity as a potential beverage to control blood glucose levels. However, the effects of the daily infusion style of green tea on tea catechins and their activity remain unclear. In this study, the extraction efficiency of catechins was investigated for 12 green tea extracts (GTEs) infused with 70% ethanol (70% EtOH for 24 h, a favored solvent for catechin extraction), room temperature water infusion (RT H2 O for 24 h, an easy way to drink tea), and hot water infusion (Hot H2 O for 90 s, a standard way to drink tea)...

Pesticide residue detection in food has become increasingly important. Herein, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) coupled with an intelligent algorithm was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of pesticide residues in tea. By employing octahedral Cu2 O templates, Au-Ag octahedral hollow cages (Au-Ag OHCs) were developed, which improved the surface plasma effect via rough edges and hollow inner structure, amplifying the Raman signals of pesticide molecules. Afterward, convolutional neural network (CNN), partial least squares (PLS), and extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithms were applied for the quantitative prediction of thiram and pymetrozine...
