BACKGROUND: Faculty have traditionally taught the physical examination (PE) to novice medical students (pre-clerkship students.), despite recruiting and cost issues and problems standardizing their approach. ACTIVITY: We present a model using standardized patient instructor (SPI)-fourth year medical student (MS4) teams to teach PE to pre-clerkship students, leveraging the benefits of co-teaching and peer-assisted learning. RESULTS: Surveys of pre-clerkship students, MS4s and SPIs indicate positive perceptions of the program, including MS4s reporting significant growth in their professional identities as educators...

COVID-19 pandemic has increased social media engagement globally. This study examined the correlation between social media use and physical/mental health among university students, considering gender and academic year. Out of 146 responses, 119 were analyzed after excluding participants with pre-existing psychological conditions. Results showed a significant correlation between social media use and mental health for all participants (correlation coefficient = 0.30, p < 0.001), indicating a negative impact on mental health with increased use...

INTRODUCTION: The restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the broad and abrupt incorporation of virtual/online learning into medical school curricula. While current literature explores the effectiveness and economic advantages of virtual curricula, robust literature surrounding the effect of virtual learning on medical student well-being is needed. This study aims to explore the effects of a predominantly virtual curriculum on pre-clerkship medical student well-being. METHODS: This study followed a constructivist grounded theory approach...

UNLABELLED: The purpose of our study was to determine if knowledge acquisition, as measured by exam item performance, differed for active or passive learning activities in our medical curriculum. Additionally, we looked for differences in exam item performance in one second-year course that varies the method of an active learning activity, case-based collaborative learning (CBCL). Finally, we assessed whether item performance was impacted when small group activities were conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic...

PURPOSE: Given the significance of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 score moving from a 3-digit value to pass/fail, the authors investigated the impact of the change on students' anxiety, approach to learning, and curiosity. METHOD: Two cohorts of pre-clerkship medical students at three medical schools completed a composite of four instruments: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the revised two-factor Study Process Questionnaire, the Interest/Deprivation Type Epistemic Curiosity Scale, and the Short Grit Scale prior to taking the last 3-digit scored Step 1 in 2021 or taking the first pass/fail scored Step 1 in 2022...

In medicine, effective teaching is requisite for both successful patient care and trainee development. However, opportunities for medical students to gain exposure to pedagogical principles and hone teaching skills are currently limited. Our initiative provides avenues for medical students to intentionally develop their teaching skill set from an early stage.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of simulation-based training for skill acquisition is widely recognized. However, the impact of simulation-based procedural training (SBPT) on pre-clerkship medical students and the retention of procedural skills learned through this modality are rarely investigated. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among pre-clerkship medical students. Learners underwent SBPT in venipuncture in the skills laboratory. Basic science, clinical science, and health system science (HSS) have become three pillars of integration upon which modern, post-Flexner, medical education is now based. Because of this new approach to curricular integration in a clinical presentation curruculum, medical training is now placed in the context of healthcare delivery. This study described the design, implementation, and assessment of an integrated teaching strategy, including the effect on students' performance in a medical neuroscience course's summative and formative examinations of an integrated clinical presentation curriculum...

BACKGROUND: Incorporating opportunities for community engagement into undergraduate medical education (UME) can help learners to identify and address social determinants of health (SDoH). Multiple challenges exist in operationalizing these experiences. METHODS: Using the Assessing Community Engagement (ACE) model, course directors at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (AMS) mapped community engagement initiatives to the four-year curriculum. FINDINGS: Service-learning, community engagement projects, and clinical rotations at health centers and free clinics aim to equip learners at AMS with the necessary skills to address SDoH...

PURPOSE: Diagnostic errors are a large burden on patient safety and improving clinical reasoning (CR) education could contribute to reducing these errors. To this end, calls have been made to implement CR training as early as the first year of medical school. However, much is still unknown about pre-clerkship students' reasoning processes. The current study aimed to observe how pre-clerkship students use clinical information during the diagnostic process. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, pre-clerkship medical students completed 10-11 self-directed online simulated CR diagnostic cases...

The transition from a pre-clerkship curriculum to the clerkship year presents a need to re-examine and modify study strategies for clinical subject examinations and ultimately the United States Medical License Examination STEP 2 Clinical Knowledge. We describe several customizable study approaches, advice on selecting resources, and methods for applying the educational framework of deliberate practice and corrective feedback to learning during a medical student's clerkship years...

PURPOSE: As of January 26, 2022, the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USLME) step 1 exam went from a scored test to pass-fail step 1 (PFS1). The authors were interested in surveying medical students at a community-based medical school to observe their perceptions of the importance of student research given this recent change. METHOD: A Qualtrics survey was disseminated to medical students (years 1-4) via school emails. Introduction Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a rapidly evolving field of diagnostic medicine as its low cost, portability, and versatility have made handheld ultrasound (US) probes an invaluable tool for many modern physicians. Despite US's benefits as a bedside evaluative tool, many medical schools have not integrated POCUS into their pre-clerkship medical education due to a lack of equipment and faculty. The first objective of our study was to determine whether student tutors (STs) would be effective resources to teach musculoskeletal (MSK) and vascular US to preclinical medical students...

The maldistribution of family physicians challenges equitable primary care access in Canada. The Theory of Social Attachment suggests that preferential selection and distributed training interventions have potential in influencing physician disposition. However, evaluations of these approaches have focused predominantly on rural underservedness, with little research considering physician disposition in other underserved communities. Accordingly, this study investigated the association between the locations from which medical graduates apply to medical school, their undergraduate preclerkship, clerkship, residency experiences, and practice as indexed across an array of markers of underservedness...
