The aims of this study were to analyze whether age, tooth type and sex are related to radiographically visible extrusion of filling material as an unintended outcome in teeth undergoing endodontic treatment with a thermoplastic obturation technique (Calamus® or GuttaCore®) and to determine whether the presence of such overfilling is associated to postoperative pain. We selected 120 teeth with diagnoses involving vital pulp and indication for endodontic treatment. Biomechanical preparation was performed using the Protaper Next® system with X2 or X3 master apical file...

METHODS: A total of 24 maxillary molars were included; distobuccal and palatal canals were instrumented to size #40 and size #50, respectively...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (n = 10) were sealed in aluminum differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) crucibles and subjected to thermal scan series consisting of a 25 to 70 °C at 5 °C/min followed by a rapid increase to 230 °C, followed by a second scan from 25 to 70 °C at 5 °C/min. The first scan evaluated the materials as-received followed by a worse-case-scenario thermal challenge simulating temperatures involved with warm vertical condensation obturation techniques...

We have shown that Computed Microtomography (CMT) is able to map the internal distribution of the filler particles in ProTaper(TM), Lexicon(TM), and GuttaCore(TM) materials, and explain the differences in their tensile and ductility properties, prior to mechanical manipulation. Working of uncrosslinked ProTaper(TM) and Lexicon(TM) samples resulted in a five-fold increase in ductility and the tensile elongation at break. CMT mapping of the internal structure showed that large, periodic, striations formed across the interior of the sample corresponding to the formation of regions with low filler particle density...

The dynamic thermomechanical properties, sealing ability, and voids formation of an experimental obturation hydroxyapatite-reinforced polyethylene (HA/PE) composite/carrier system were investigated and compared with those of a commercial system [GuttaCore (GC)]. The HA/PE system was specifically designed using a melt-extrusion process. The viscoelastic properties of HA/PE were determined using a dynamic thermomechanical analyser. Human single-rooted teeth were endodontically instrumented and obturated using HA/PE or GC systems, and then sealing ability was assessed using a fluid filtration system...
