This study examines the presence of bacterial contamination on surgical gloves and suggests appropriate measures for an aseptic surgical environment. To prevent glove contamination during surgery, surgeons and assistants should change gloves periodically, and scrub nurses should be careful when opening packages and handing over implants.

INTRODUCTION: The National Health Service contributes 4%-5% of England and Wales' greenhouse gases and a quarter of all public sector waste. Between 20% and 33% of healthcare waste originates from a hospital's operating room, and up to 90% of waste is sent for costly and unneeded hazardous waste processing. The goal of this study was to quantify the amount and type of waste produced during a selection of common trauma and elective orthopaedic operations, and to calculate the carbon footprint of processing the waste...

In patients with severe necrotizing pancreatitis, pancreatic necrosis and secondary infection of surrounding tissues can quickly spread to the whole retroperitoneal space. Treatment of pancreatic abscess complicating necrotizing pancreatitis is difficult and has a high mortality rate. The well-accepted treatment strategy is early debridement of necrotic tissues, drainage, and postoperative continuous retroperitoneal lavage. However, traditional open surgery has several disadvantages, such as severe trauma, interference with abdominal organs, a high rate of postoperative infection and adhesion, and hardness with repeated debridement...

PURPOSE: Although traditional craniotomy (TC) surgery has failed to show benefits for the functional outcome of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, a minimally invasive hematoma removal plan to avoid white matter fiber damage may be a safer and more feasible surgical approach, which may improve the prognosis of ICH. We conducted a historical cohort study on the use of multimodal image fusion-assisted neuroendoscopic surgery (MINS) for the treatment of ICH, and compared its safety and effectiveness with traditional methods...

CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a man who developed severe caustic injury of his upper gastrointestinal tract after ingestion of a commercially available 9.5% hydrochloric acidic cleaning solution. He rapidly deteriorated and required endotracheal intubation. He underwent several imaging modalities demonstrating his injuries and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. DISCUSSION: Acidic caustic ingestions may range in severity and uncommonly result in death...

BACKGROUND: Adults in Saudi Arabia are more likely to be obese, which has negative effects on reproductive health, especially for women. While bariatric surgery (BS) provides a sustainable approach, little is known about how it affects menstrual health and requires a study among the Saudi demographic. METHODS: The current investigation is a cross-sectional study conducted in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using an online questionnaire to assess the impact of BS on menstrual abnormalities in women...

Thermal, electrical, chemical, or electromagnetic radiation can cause painful wounds or burns. Spilling hot liquids onto the skin can also cause these kinds of injuries. The two biggest factors contributing to burn injuries in the elderly are smoking and exposure to open flames, while scalding is the primary cause of burn damage in children. Newborns and the elderly make up the majority of burn casualties. In India, there are estimated to be 6-7 million burn cases per year. The high incidence is attributed to the population's illiteracy, poverty, and lack of awareness of safety...

Hospitals in Europe produce approximately 6 million tons of medical waste annually, about one-third of this originating in operating rooms. Most of it is solid waste, which can be recycled if bodily fluids do not contaminate it. Only 2-3% of hospital waste must be disposed of as infectious waste, and this is much lower than the 50-70% of garbage in the biohazard waste stream. In June 2021, at the main operating room of the Department of General Surgery of the University of Turin, we began a separate collection program for materials consisting of plastic, paper, TNT (material not contaminated by bodily fluids), and biohazardous waste...

Hemostatic procedures for controlling nasal bleeding in refractory diseases such as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) can be challenging. In this report, we present a novel technique for underwater endoscopic endonasal hemostatic surgery, which was performed on a 69-year-old man with HHT. The patient had been experiencing frequent episodes of nasal bleeding and had many telangiectasias in the nasal cavity, which were the cause of the bleeding. These telangiectasias were effectively treated using a coblation device in combination with an endoscope lens-cleaning system that supplied saline to create stable underwater conditions...

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Despite the growing use of bioabsorbable mesh in ventral hernia repairs (VHR), the evidence of its impact on patient outcomes remains limited. This study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety profile of poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) mesh for ventral hernia repair through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A literature search of five databases (PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Medline, and Google Scholar) produced a list of publications that analyzed the use of P4HB mesh in ventral hernia repair in both clean and contaminated cases...

Continuous cutaneous urinary diversion is challenging when the appendix is physically unavailable. The Yang-Monti channel is an alternative to the tunneled appendix for urinary diversion. We present a case involving a 49-year-old man who underwent total urethrectomy and cystostomy 10 months previously. No tumor recurrence was observed; however, the patient experienced severe catheter-related bladder irritation after the procedure. The patient was readmitted to the authors' hospital and underwent laparoscopic continent cutaneous urinary diversion using extracorporeal construction of a modified Yang-Monti channel...

With the advent of operable 3-dimensional (3D)-printed models, case preparation could occur outside of the cadaveric laboratory. The objective of this study was to design a mobile drilling station that can be used for surgical practice in a variety of clean workplaces. Using materials obtained from hardware stores and online retailers, a wheelable drilling station was constructed to mimic laboratory conditions while also being easily maneuverable into clinic rooms. The station houses the otologic drill, suction, and irrigation mechanisms, is height adjustable, and has a shielded workspace...

BACKGROUND: Many surgical risk assessment tools emphasize patient-specific risk factors. Anesthesia and surgery could alter the pharmacokinetic behavior of different drugs administered perioperative by many mechanisms that affect distribution, metabolism or excretion processes. Intravenous administration of the antimicrobial within 30 and 60 min before incision is recommended in order to reach therapeutic serum and tissue concentrations and redosing is recommended if the duration of the procedure exceeds two half-life of the antimicrobial...
