BACKGROUND: Further improvement of preparative regimens before allogeneic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an unmet medical need for the growing number of older or comorbid patients with acute myeloid leukaemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of conditioning with treosulfan plus fludarabine compared with reduced-intensity busulfan plus fludarabine in this population. METHODS: We did an open-label, randomised, non-inferiority, phase 3 trial in 31 transplantation centres in France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Poland...

In order to provide guidance for the protection and utilization of resources, quality control and breeding of improved varieties,we compared the main phenotypic characters and quality of wild and transplanted Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis collected from different producing areas. Seven phenotypic characters of 33 samples of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis collected from Yunnan,Guizhou and Sichuan were determined by conventional methods, and the principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used to analyze the diversity of the samples...

Liver transplantation has emerged as a highly efficient treatment for a variety of acute and chronic liver diseases. However, organ shortage is becoming an increasing problem globally, limiting the applicability of liver transplantation. In addition, potential recipients are becoming sicker, thereby increasing the risk of losing the graft during transplantation or in the initial postoperative period after liver transplantation (three months). This trend is challenging the model for end-stage liver disease allocation system, where the sickest candidates are prioritised and no delisting criteria are given...

OBJECTIVES: Neurotrophic factors secreting cells (NTS-SCs) may be a superior cell source for cell-based therapy in neurodegenerative diseases. NTS-SCs are able to secrete some neurotrophic Such as nerve growth factor and glia-derived neurotrophic factor. Our primary aim was to assess transplantation of neurotrophic factor secreting cells derived from human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) into the damaged spinal cord rats and determine the potential of these cells in remyelination...

BACKGROUND: Dual kidney transplantation (DKT) was developed to improve outcomes from transplantation of extended criteria donors (ECD). This study examined which surgical techniques have been reported for DKT and whether any technique had superior patient and graft survival. METHOD: Electronic databases were searched for published studies mapping to MESH terms: "kidney or renal" AND "transplan*" AND "dual or double." Single case reports, studies of patients less than 18 years old, studies which did not describe the surgical technique, and studies that did not report patient or graft survival were excluded...

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become a viable and increasingly utilized option for the treatment of refractory hypoxemia in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, options are limited for ARDS patients who fail to wean from ECMO. The high rates of infection, presence of extrapulmonary end organ damage, ICU-acquired weakness, and high short-term mortality associated with ARDS are all significant hurdles that make lung transplantation a difficult prospect to consider...

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in liver transplant recipients. Affecting ~25% of patients preoperatively, and up to 60% postoperatively significantly worsens the prognosis. Etiology differs depending on the time of its onset, from mostly prerenal before the transplantation, ischemic in the early postoperative period to toxic AKI later on. Liver transplantation is a lenghty and complex procedure with a significant risk of hemodynamic instability, metabolic acidosis and electrolyte disturbances...

Four hundred forty-one adult allogeneic blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) survivors participated in a cross-sectional survey to assess long-term follow-up (LTFU) model of care preference. Survey instruments included the Sydney Post BMT Survey, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-BMT, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21, the Chronic GVHD Activity Assessment-Patient Self Report (Form B), the Lee Chronic GVHD Symptom Scale and the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory. We found most BMT survivors (74%) would prefer LTFU with their transplantation physicians alone or in combination with transplantation center-linked services (satellite clinics or telemedicine) Over one-quarter indicated a preference for receiving comprehensive post-transplantation care in a "satellite" clinic staffed by their BMT team situated closer to their place of residence, with higher income, higher educational level, and sexual morbidity being significant social factors influencing this preference...

As human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) transplanation may be promising in heart failure treatment, it is important to know whether hypoxic preconditioning (HP) promote hUC-MSCs proliferation and differentiation and protect them against chemical hypoxic damages. This study aimed to investigate the effects of HP on proliferation and differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs). The study also aimed to confirm our hypothesis that HP could promote hUC-MSCs proliferation and differentiation to cardiomyocyte-like cells as well as effectively protecting hUC-MSCs and cardiomyocyte-like cells against chemical hypoxic damages...

We report a rare case of primary renal allograft dysfunction due to myeloma cast nephropathy in a patient with no overt clinical features of multiple myeloma preceding his transplantation. A 45-year-old man on hemodialysis for six months for end-stage kidney disease due to presumed chronic glomerulonephritis developed immediate graft dysfunction post-transplantation. The graft biopsy was diagnostic of myeloma cast nephropathy. Other criteria for lambda light chain multiple myeloma were fulfilled with immunofixation electrophoresis and bone marrow biopsy...

We report the first case of a 32-year-old woman with Muckle-Wells syndrome and biopsy-proven systemic AA amyloidosis and end-stage renal disease. She was treated with canakinumab 150 mg subcutaneously every 8 weeks and underwent renal transplantation. Fourteen months after renal transplanation, the patient had no flares of Muckle-Wells syndrome and no evidence of amyloidosis in the renal transplant under an excellent graft function and therapy with canakinumab.

Left ventricular assistance with surgically implanted pump devices like the HeartMate may be crucial in selected patient with end-stage heart failure. However, mainly due to its high aortic output, the pump itself may induce severe aortic regurgitation that could result in paradoxycal worsening of the anterograde perfusion after the initiation of the support. Surgical or percutaneous occlusion of the aortic valve has proved useful in these kinds of patients. Here we present a successful case of bail-out CoreValve implantation after HeartMate II positioning complicated by acute severe aortic regurgitation in a patient with a failing homograft and end-stage ventricular dysfunction, ineligible for heart transplanation...

Hematopoiesis is regulated by the bone marrow (BM) niche microenvironment. We recently found that posttransplant administration of AMD3100 (a specific and reversible CXCR4 antagonist) enhanced donor cell engraftment and promoted recovery of all donor cell lineages in a congeneic mouse transplant model. We hypothesized that AMD3100 enhances donor cell reconstitution in part by modulating the levels and constitution of soluble factors in the niche microenvironment. In the current study, the effects of the BM extracellular fluid (supernatant) from AMD3100-treated transplant recipient mice on colony-forming units (CFUs) were examined...

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) arising from native kidneys is diagnosed among up to 4.6% of the renal transplant recipients as a consequence of immunosuppression. These tumors tend to behave more aggressively.(1) Although tumors occurring in allografted kidneys can be treated by partial (to save functional graft) or total nephrectomy, there is a paucity of data the outcomes...
