Last year in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, we introduced some recent nuclear medicine research conducted in Japan. This was favorably received by European readers in the main. This year we wish to focus on the Annals of Nuclear Medicine on some of the fine nuclear medicine research work executed in Europe recently. In the current review article, we take up five topics: prostate-specific membrane antigen imaging, recent advances in radionuclide therapy, [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography (PET) for dementia, quantitative PET assessment of myocardial perfusion, and iodine-124 ((124)I)...

Multi-modality molecular imaging techniques have expanded the role of imaging biomarkers in the pharmaceutical industry and are beginning to streamline the drug discovery and development process. The World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) serves as a forum for discussing innovative and exploratory multi-modal, interdisciplinary molecular imaging research with a mission of bridging the gap between pathology and in vivo imaging. To formalize the role of the WMIS in pharmaceutical research efforts, members of the society have formed an interest group entitled Advancing Drug Discovery and Development using Molecular Imaging (ADDMI)...

The core mission of the Early Stage Professionals in Molecular Imaging Sciences (ESPMIS) Interest Group is to help young scientists navigate the professional landscape of molecular imaging. Since its formation in early 2015, ESPMIS has used the annual World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC) as a platform to provide education and guidance on three areas that are particularly critical to young scientists: networking, career development, and funding. In the coming years, ESPMIS plans to continue its focus on these topics, work with the WMIS on the creation of new digital tools for young scientists, and introduce two new areas of emphasis: the importance of mentoring and international career opportunities...

UNLABELLED: The sixth Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) Workshop on Imaging in Osteoarthritis combined with the third osteoarthritis (OA) Biomarkers Workshop is the first to bring together the imaging and molecular biomarker communities to focus on clinical validation and qualification of OA biomarkers. The workshop was held in Hilton Head, SC, USA, from June 12-14, 2012; 138 attendees participated, including representatives from academia, pharmaceutical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) industries, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institutes of Health (NIH)...

Biomarkers are biological agents used as indicators of biological states. In clinical applications, biomarkers reflect the presence, severity, or progression of disease states. They may also predict risk or responsiveness of a disease to a given treatment. There has been increasingly intense research interest in biomarkers, yet their translation into routine clinical use is lagging. To stimulate communication and cross-fertilization, the 2nd World Congress on Biomarkers & Clinical Research was held in Baltimore, MD, USA in 2011...

The conference was the first of its kind in a series of trend-setting conferences conceived and organized by Select Biosciences. The word 'probe' is a broad term that can be interpreted to mean any one of a wide variety of agents. These include active chemistries discovered in academic screening laboratories or in government organizations (Molecular Libraries Probe Production Centers Network or the US NIH), commercially available probes (i.e., dyes, antibodies or fluorescent proteins), failed drug candidates from the pharmaceutical industry, whole-body or cellular imaging agents, specific biomarkers or tool molecules from chemogenomics and/or systems biology efforts...

The XVII World Congress of Psychiatric Genetics, sponsored by The International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG) took place in San Diego, California from 4 to 8 November 2009. Approximately 550 participants gathered to discuss the latest molecular genetic findings relevant to serious mental illness, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, substance abuse, autism, and attention deficit disorder. Recent advances in the field were discussed, including the genome-wide association studies results, copy number variation (CNV) in the genome, genomic imaging, and large multicenter collaborations...
