Introduction: Very few nutritional supplements have scientifically demonstrated their effectiveness as an ergogenic aid. This review will examine creatine monohydrate (MC), the β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), sodium bicarbonate (BS), the β-alanine and caffeine. Objectives: To analyze the effi cacy, mechanisms of action, dose, side effects and some sports that can benefit from their consumption. Methods: Searching in PubMed bibliographic database reviews from the last 15 years and original articles from the last 5 years of the studied substances...

OBJECTIVE: The Outcome Reduction With Initial Glargine Intervention (ORIGIN) trial reported neutral effects of insulin glargine on cardiovascular outcomes and cancers and reduced incident diabetes in high-cardiovascular risk adults with dysglycemia after 6.2 years of active treatment. Omega-3 fatty acids had neutral effects on cardiovascular outcomes. The ORIGIN and Legacy Effects (ORIGINALE) study measured posttrial effects of these interventions during an additional 2.7 years. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Surviving ORIGIN participants attended up to two additional visits...

There has been a recent shift from a uniform treatment targeting HbA1c to a patient centered approach due to disappointing results of intensified glucose control in mega-trials such as VADT, ADVANCE, and ACCORD. In addition, morbidity and mortality has been substantially reduced since the UKPDS leading to an overestimation of the absolute risk for cardiovascular complications in randomized controlled trials. With substantial progress in prevention of cardiovascular complications, patients with type 2 diabetes now survive long enough to face diabetes-related complications and cancer risk...

Low-level processes of children's written language production are cognitively more costly than those involved in speaking. This has been shown by French authors who compared oral and written memory span performance. The observed difficulties of children's, but not of adults' low-level processes in writing may stem from graphomotoric as well as from orthographic inadequacies. We report on five experiments designed to replicate and expand the original results. First, the French results were successfully replicated for German third-graders, and for university students...

According the morphological classification of tumors as metahronnic are defined tumors with more than two histological types in one anatomic region (one body), and as synchronous--these with two histological types in one anatomic area. Affected lymph nodes in cervical cancer is different and depends on the stage and histological type of tumor (squamous and adenocarcinoma) and is an important prognostic factor. Malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma populations (NHL) originale from the lymph organs and from their populations downstream lymphoid Stem cell to mature lymphocytes that have opportunities for transformation and proliferation...

BACKGROUND: Measurements of haemoglobin mass (Hb(mass)) with the carbon monoxide (CO) rebreathing method provide valuable information in the field of sports medicine, and have markedly increased during the last decade. However, several different approaches (as a combination of the rebreathing procedure and subsequent calculations) for measuring Hb(mass) are used, and routine measurements have indicated that the Hb(mass) differs substantially among various approaches. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the Hb(mass) of the seven most commonly used approaches, and then to provide conversion factors for an improved comparability of Hb(mass) measured with the different approaches...

The authors analyse the detailed clinical course in an homogenous review of 17 cases reports of traumatic injury affecting the extracranial portion of internal carotid artery. Only cases in which there were neither cervical perforating wound nor atheromatous predisposing lesion were considered. As in cases reported in the literature, the young age of these patients, with prevalence in the second decade and in men, was attributable to the etiology. Circumstances in which diagnosis was established induce to discern two unequal groups, according as there was either a coma or immediate focal signs, or a delayed symptomatology : it occured most frequently after a free interval shorter than 48 hours, and reaching in the extrema (one instance) 40 days...
