PURPOSE: To present a modified technique of 4-point scleral fixation using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) 2 eyelets intraocular lens (IOL) with 8-0 polypropylene sutures. METHODS: A 270-degree conjunctival peritomy is done, and 4 sclerotomies (2 nasal and 2 temporal) are created. Lamellar scleral or clear corneal incision is made at superior site (6 mm wide for sclera or 5.5-6 mm for corneal). A short segment of 8-0 polypropylene is inserted into each eyelet, each thread of the suture is externalized through the sclerotomy site, and the lens is inserted...

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare genetic disorder, distinguished by the following characteristics: macrosomia, macroglossia, abdominal wall deformities such as omphalocele, visceromegaly, hemihypertrophy and elevated risk of developing tumors such as nephroblastoma or hepatoblastoma. A 2.5-year-old female patient came to the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry with a complaint of abnormally large tongue along with difficulty in swallowing and slurred speech. On clinical examination, the built of the patient was greater than normal...

A penile fracture is a rare urological emergency, often resulting from blunt trauma to the erect penis. This case report describes a 30-year-old male who presented with penile swelling during sexual intercourse, raising suspicion of a penile fracture. The patient underwent surgical exploration, revealing a rent in the tunica albuginea and an additional laceration in the corpus spongiosum with the Foley catheter exposed. The lacerations were closed using Vicryl sutures over a Foley catheter. The patient experienced an uneventful postoperative course, and follow-up assessments showed satisfactory healing of the urethra...

BACKGROUND: The biomechanical assessment of tendon repair is essential for the evaluation of different tendon suturing techniques. The shoelace suture technique with absorbable Vicryl® is a modified technique of Achilles tendon repair that may have biomechanical advantages depending on the number of threads used and the direction of the suture. PURPOSE: To evaluate the creep under constant pre-load, the stiffness, the maximum strength, and the failure mode for three different configurations of the shoelace suture in a bovine tendon biomechanical model...

The extraction of impacted third molars is a common but potentially complication-prone oral surgical procedure. Wound healing plays a vital role in preventing complications. This scoping review aimed to assess the clinical and microbiological aspects of various suture materials and cyanoacrylates. Unlike existing studies, we included more articles and comprehensively compared suture materials. Articles published in languages other than English; duplicate studies; studies deemed irrelevant for the specific research questions, including those analyzing different supplementary treatments or not corresponding to the abstract's content; ex vivo or experimental animal studies; studies lacking approval from an ethics committee; and narrative reviews, systematic reviews, or systematic and meta-analysis reviews were excluded...

The loop and knot securities of two polyfilament and two monofilament sutures of four diameters (3.0, 2.0, 0, 1) were evaluated with a tensiometer for four four-throw knots, known to be secure with a 2.0 polyfilament suture. Loop security of Monocryl 1 is low, being 14.7 ± 3.0 Newton (N) for a three-throw half-knot (H3) and 15.4 ± 2.4 N and 28.3 ± 10 N for two (SSs) and four (SSsSsSs) symmetrical sliding half-hitches. This is lower than 18, 24, and 46 N for similar knots with Vicryl. Polyfilament sutures have excellent knot security for all four diameters...

Background The process of suturing is essential to the healing of surgical wounds. Sutures on surgical wounds from fabric approximate ligament tissues, control haemorrhage, and assist the primary healing process in oral surgical procedures. The oral environment may cause the suture to lose its tensile strength, which causes tissue to open and spread infection. Different mouthwashes are recommended for effective oral hygiene maintenance postoperatively. Ideally, the use of mouthwashes should not alter the mechanical properties of suture materials...

Polyglactin 910 (Vicryl) and polypropylene (Prolene) are common suture materials used in ophthalmic surgical procedures. However, there are limited studies assessing tissue reactions to different sutures in eyelid areas. In this study, these suture materials were used subcutaneously in 10 lateral canthi of 5 pigs. Clinical reactive score (CRS) was assessed 14 days and 60 days after surgery. On histology, subcutaneous tissue reactions were assessed by the presence of different inflammatory cells, and the aggregate tissue irritation score was calculated...

Surgical site infections (SSI) are a clinical and economic burden. Suture-associated SSI may develop when bacteria colonize the suture surface and form biofilms that are resistant to antibiotics. Thrombin-derived C-terminal peptide (TCP)-25 is a host defense peptide with a unique dual mode of action that can target both bacteria and the excessive inflammation induced by bacterial products. The peptide has demonstrated therapeutic potential in preclinical in vivo wound infection models. In this study, we set out to explore whether TCP-25 could provide a new bioactive innate immune feature to hydrophilic polyglactin sutures (Vicryl)...

Surgical threads are of great importance to prevent wound infection and accelerate tissue healing in surgical treatment. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and chitosan (CS) are attracting increasing attention to be employed as biomedicine materials due to their nontoxicity, cytocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, a robust and absorbable cellulose-based surgical thread has not been explored. Therefore, in this work, a bioinspired CNF/CS composite thread containing 5% cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) by the mass of CS was prepared, and the obtained CNF/CS-5C thread exhibited excellent mechanical properties and low swelling ratio in water due to the high cross-link degree...
