Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) with serious complications and fatal cases have been reported over the last decade worldwide. The authors report a rare case of HFMD in a neonate complicated with brainstem encephalitis and pulmonary edema. She had fever, lethargy, dyspnea. Moro response in healthy term newborns were studied to determine latency interval, time taken for optimal response (embracing movement of arms), and total duration of reflex response. Latency interval for onset of response was 0.41-0.49. Time taken for optimal response was 0.910-1.041s. Total duration of Moro response was 2.34 -2.59 s. Values were similar for males and females. Optimal response in babies born by cesarean section were significantly delayed than vaginal babies.

BACKGROUND: The fracture of clavicle is the most frequently observed bone fracture as birth trauma and it is usually unilateral. It is seen following shoulder dystocia deliveries or breech presentation of macrosomic newborns. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two macrosomic newborns with bilateral clavicle fracture and brachial plexus palsy due to birth trauma. Chest X-rays confirmed bilateral fracture of clavicles. Twenty-nine opioid-exposed and 26 nonopioid-exposed neonates received neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) assessment by an examiner blinded to group status twice daily over the first two postnatal days. The opioid-exposed group had higher mean NAS scores than the nonopioid-exposed group.
