Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in adults in the United States. Despite compelling evidence of improved outcomes in CRC, screening rates are not optimal. This study aimed to characterize CRC screening trends over the last two decades and assess the impact of various screening modalities on overall CRC screening rates. Using National Health Interview Survey data from 2005-2021, we examined CRC screening (colonoscopy, mt-sDNA, FOBT/FIT, sigmoidoscopy, CT Colonography) rates among adults aged 50-75 years (n = 85,571)...

This case report describes a 17-year-old patient with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. The patient presented with non-bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. A colonoscopy revealed a cecal polypoid mass that required laparoscopic surgery. The residual appendix was dilated with myxoglobulosis and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm staged pT3Nx. The potential risk of pseudomyxoma peritonei is a serious complication of these tumors. Surveillance plans include computed tomography abdomen and pelvis, and tumor markers every 6 months for the next 2 years...

We present a rare case of schwannoma in the ascending colon of a 60-year-old female with dyslipidemia. A series of diagnostic procedures, including colonoscopy and CT colonography, led to the successful robotic-assisted right hemicolectomy. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma, and the patient achieved a complete recovery post-surgery.

This case report presents a 24-year-old female with a history of ulcerative colitis (UC) who sought care for symptoms initially suggestive of the disease exacerbation but was later diagnosed as acute cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis. The patient's clinical course, marked by watery diarrhea, blood in stools, vomiting, and fever, raised suspicion of a UC flare. However, a nuanced diagnostic approach revealed CMV superinfection, including computed tomography, colonoscopy, and tissue polymerase chain reaction (PCR)...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in China. However, resistance to multiple chemotherapeutics after surgery leads to failure of the main therapy to CRC. Natural killer (NK) cells are innate cytotoxic lymphocytes that exhibit strong cytotoxic activity against tumour cells. NK cell-based therapy, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, has achieved favourable results and holds promise for addressing recurrence and metastasis in CRC patients after surgery...

Autoimmune disorders have a wide spectrum of symptoms, often with multiorgan involvement. Multiple autoimmune disorders also often occur concurrently in the same patient. These two possibilities must be distinguished in patients with multiorgan involvement to ensure early diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report a case of a previously healthy man who presented with simultaneous Takayasu arteritis and Crohn's disease. He presented with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and severe aortic regurgitation...

Intussusception in adults is rare and is often associated with a pathologic lead point. While colonic adenocarcinoma is a common cause, well-differentiated colonic neuroendocrine tumors are exceedingly rare. We present a unique case of an ileocolic intussusception due to a distal ascending colonic neuroendocrine tumor, emphasizing the diagnostic challenges and importance of prompt intervention. A 60-year-old male with a previous screening colonoscopy in June of 2022 presented to the Emergency Department with two days of cramping, right upper abdominal pain with associated nausea and two episodes of emesis...

Timely detection of colorectal cancer recurrence is paramount, as treatment of early-stage recurrence greatly improves survival and outcomes. Current guidelines outline post-resection surveillance through endoscopy, CT imaging, and tumor markers for five years; however, there is minimal data to guide follow-up beyond this. We present the case of a 60-year-old female with locoregional recurrence 15 years after endoscopic mucosal resection of a low-grade Haggit level 3 sigmoid colon polyp. Unusually the recurrence was noted as an incidental finding following investigation of an elevated alpha-fetoprotein level post liver transplant, and a retrospective review of imaging revealed a calcified sigmoid mesentery mass...

Adult-onset intussusception, particularly associated with colonoscopy, is extremely rare. A 78-year-old man, referred to our hospital for colonic endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), experienced subsequent dull abdominal pain, as well as elevated peripheral blood leukocytosis and C-reactive protein levels. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a colocolonic intussusception at the hepatic flexure. Emergency colonoscopy revealed ball-like swollen mucosa distal to the EMR site of the ascending colon. The mucosa was intact without necrosis...

BACKGROUND: Since colorectal cancer is one of the most important types of cancer in the world that often leads to death, computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems are a promising solution for early diagnosis of this disease with fewer side effects than conventional colonoscopy. Therefore, the aim of this research is to design a CAD system for processing colorectal Computerized Tomography (CT) images using a combination of an artificial neural network and a particle swarm optimizer. METHOD: First, the data set of the research was created from the colorectal CT images of the patients of Loghman-e Hakim Hospitals in Tehran and Al-Zahra Hospitals in Isfahan who underwent colorectal CT imaging and had conventional colonoscopy done within a maximum period of one month after that...

Lipomas are benign tumors that can affect the digestive tract, everywhere from the hypopharynx to the rectum. Lipomas affecting the large intestine are the second most common benign tumor, after colon adenoma. We present the case of a 46-year-old patient who was initially hospitalized in the Gastroenterology Clinic with a diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding. The colonoscopy raised the suspicion of a malignant tumor of the transverse colon, but the computed tomography scan showed the existence of a lipoma that measured 16/11/12 cm that occupied the ascending and transverse colon, though the CT examination could not determinate the origin of the lipoma...

Venous congestion is a possible cause of ischemic colitis following colorectal surgery. As such, congestive ischemic colitis should be considered in such cases where the mesenteric artery is preserved. Herein, we describe the case of a 73-year-old man who presented to the hospital with a two-week history of difficult defecation and frequent mucous stools and was subsequently diagnosed with refractory ischemic enterocolitis due to venous congestion. The patient had undergone resection of the sigmoid colon cancer with preservation of the inferior mesenteric artery 11 months before presentation...
