Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a major public health threat in large areas of Central and Eastern Europe and in Russia. This review summarizes the current data on the interactions between the TBE virus and the host, with a particular focus on the mechanisms of neuronal injury, immune response and immunopathology in the central nervous system (CNS), and factors that determine the course and outcome of TBE. Novel trends of experimental therapy of TBE are discussed. Combining small molecule inhibitors targeting viral replication with immunomodulatury agents might be a way to maximize viral clearance and minimize immunopathology in the CNS during TBE...

UNLABELLED: VIRUS: West Nile virus is a single-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus. EPIDEMIOLOGY: West Nile virus is maintained in the cycle involving culicine mosquitoes and birds. Humans typically acquire West Nile infection through a bite from infected adult mosquito. Person to person transmission can occur through organ transplantation, blood and blood product transfusions, transplacentally and via breast milk. Human cases of West Nile infections were recorded in Africa, Israel, Russia, India, Pakistan...

The current global increase in prevalence of vector borne diseases, as well as an expansion of tropical infections to more temperate zones, justifies further studies on vector populations. Urban areas may favour viral transmission to humans through close contacts between the vectors and the vertebrate hosts, and also affecting mosquito populations by offering larval habitat, refuges and adequate microclimates to survive the winter. This work analyses the spatial distribution of potential vector mosquitoes in relation to landscape characteristics in an urban environment in a temperate climate region...

Starting from the Constantin Von Economo's description of a "new" disease, the lethargic encephalitis, the author delineates the history of an infectious sleeping sickness that caused epidemics in Europe from 1917 to 1928 and led to create, in Italy, the "Institutes for Encephalitis".

The AA describe 82 cases of complications occurred during an outbreak of mumps in 1980-81. Forty-two cases of meningitis, 4 of pancreatitis, 2 of orchitis and 2 cases of encefalitis occurred. All patients had eventual, complete recovery. The other cases are not specific complications. The treatment was almost entirely symptomatic. The headache of meningitis was relieved by a lumbar poncture. In the epicrisis of the AA these cases of complications have some importance in relation to the opportunity of getting herd vaccination against mumps...

In a loose-housed herd four cows are emergency-slaughtered, within some weeks, because of symptoms of encefalitis. From the brains of these cows, as well as from the litter, coming from broilers, that had been put in the cow-stables before, Listeria monocytogenes type 4b has been isolated. At the same time an investigation was made from faeces/intestinal contents of broilers. Out of the contents of 2.373 intestines, 1% of about 2.300.000 broilers ready for use, coming from 146 farms, 4.1% L.monocytogenes has been isolated...
