An important recent advance in anticancer therapy was the development of molecular-targeting drugs, such as the epidermal growth-factor receptor (EGFR)-targeting drug ZD1839 (Iressa) and the HER2-trageting anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody trastuzumab (Herceptin). ZD1839 and trastuzumab are reported to improve the therapeutic efficacy of treatment for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and breast cancer, respectively, although the effectiveness of either drug alone is not satisfactory. NSCLC cells often express both EGFR and HER2...

While significant advances in the treatment of cancer occured during the last half of the twentieth century, parallel decreases in overall cancer death rates were not observed. Cancer therapy remains an area of significant unmet medical need. Abbott's oncology research programs are focused on pioneering trageted, less toxic therapies, aimed at different aspects of tumor growth and development. Oncology drugs in development at Abbott target several mechanisms of cancer progression by interfering with multiple processes necessary for tumor growth: recruitment of a blood supply, cell proliferation, and the development of metastases...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)-specific promoter mediated target gene therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro. METHODS: Retroviral vector (LX2.2CD) in which the cytosine deaminase (CD) gene was driven by the 2.2 kb recombinant human AFP TRS. After transfecting three human hepatoma cell lines and one non-hepatoma cell line with LX2.2 CD, anti-G418 clones integrated CD gene were selected, and inhibitory experiment of cell growth was performed...

On the basis of 404 transurethral resections of tumours of the urinary bladder a report is given on complications and their prevention. Among 404 tumour resections 4 perforations of the bladder occurred (0.9%). The extraperitoneal perforations were simply paravesically drained; the intraperitoneal ones were oversewn and intraperitoneally drained. Post-operative bleeding was well controlled by means of a continuous wash via an additional thin catheter (Charr. 7-8) fitted into the urethra. Patients with existing infections of the urinary passages were traget-specifically treated with antibiotics...
