This article discusses the case history of an 87-year old woman with loss of consciousness following accidental CO intoxication. A few weeks later, the patient's cognitive abilities progressively deteriorated. This is hence a case of Delayed Neurological Symptoms after CO intoxication. This condition occurs in 40% of patients with CO intoxication and manifests itself 3-240 days after apparent recovery. Symptoms can linger for a long time and are in some cases even permanent. Treatment of CO intoxication usually consists of administering normobaric oxygen and in certain cases hyperbaric oxygen...

PURPOSE: To examine the safety and efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen as the primary treatment for Grade IV radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hyperbaric oxygen was prospectively applied as a primary treatment option in 11 patients with Grade IV radiation cystitis. Primary endpoint was the incidence of complete and partial response to treatment. Secondary endpoints included the duration of response, the correlation of treatment success-rate to the interval between the onset of haematuria and initiation of therapy, blood transfusion need and total radiation dose, the number of sessions to success, the avoidance of surgery and the overall survival...

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the morphology of estradiol valerate (EV) induced polycystic ovary (PCO) to find a new treatment modality for improvement of PCO. METHODS: The rats were divided into four groups. Group1, control; group 2, PCO group; group 3, PCO with HBOT group and group 4, normal ovary with HBOT. PCO was induced by a single intramuscular injection of 4 mg EV in adult cycling rats. Other rats with normal ovaries had oil injection as placebo...

Nicolau syndrome (livedoid dermatitis) is a very rare complication of intramuscular injections and manifests as excruciating pain immediately after injection. We describe a 3-year-old boy with diagnosis of Nicolau syndrome after intramuscular benzathine penicillin injection to the midanterior part of the left thigh. He was treated with hyberbaric oxygen and pentoxyphilline in addition to supportive treatment and recovered with no sequelae.

Gangliosides from livers of weanling rats were analyzed after 15% partial hepatectomy (PH) and different pre- and post-operative hyberbaric oxygenation (pre- and postHBO). Neu5Ac was the predominant ganglioside-derived sialic acid (>85%) compared to Neu5Gc. Almost identical low total sialic acid content (Neu5Ac+Neu5Gc) of the control and operated nonHBO animals opposed a 6.4- to 7.6-fold increase in pre- and postHBO animals (69.26 and 81.64pmol/mg wet weight, respectively). NanoESI-QTOF mass spectrometry combined with HPTLC immunostaining revealed GM3(Neu5Ac) and GM3(Neu5Gc) as major gangliosides, correlating with the respective sialic acid concentrations...

The effect of hyberbaric oxygenation on mutagenicity of nitrosomethylurea (NMU) was examined. It was shown that in the regimes studied, hyperbaric oxygenation enhances the NMU mutagenic effect both on the nuclear and on the plastid genetic material of sunflower, but do not increase intensity of free-radical reactions and do not induce plastid mutations and chromosome aberrations per se. At high concentrations inducing chromosome aberrations (0.03%), NMU was shown to enhance the level of free-radical processes...

A 67-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of abdominal pain. Barium enema examination and colonoscopy showed numerous round polypoid lesions covered with normal mucosa in the area from the ascending colon to the splenic flexure. Endoscopic ultrasound examination with an ultrasonic catheter probe revealed a strong echo with distal acoustic shadowing in the third layer of the diseased colonic wall, which suggested the presence of gas in the submucosa. The gaseous cysts disappeared completely after hyberbaric oxygen therapy at 2 to 3 atmospheres absolute (60 minutes, twice a day) for 30 consecutive days...

Spontaneous Clostridium septicum myonecrosis is an uncommon disorder that has been described in association with malignancy, immunosuppression and neutropaenia. Typical clostridial myonecrosis develops without a visible portal of entry and mortality is high. The pathogenesis is not completely understood but the clostridia may gain access to the circulation via areas of ileo-caecal ulceration secondary to enterocolitis, antibiotics or neoplasms. A 5 year old boy with congenital neutropaenia presented with spontaneous Clostridium septicum myonecrosis in the thigh...

We have previously reported that hyberbaric oxygen (HBO) improved the survival rate of experimental free flaps. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of combined hypothermia and HBO administered during storage on free flaps and on the xanthine oxidase system in rats. Epigastric skin flaps were stored cold for 48 and 72 hours either in room air or under HBO (2.9 atmospheres absolute, 100% oxygen) before free flap transfer. The success rates of free flaps were 80% (8/10) after 48 hours and 20% (2/10) after 72 hours of cold storage in room air...

The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation upon experimental infection of BALB/c mice with the scrapie agent was investigated by virological methods, histology and electron microscopy. A multiple exposure of scrapie-infected mice to hyberbaric oxygenation during the incubational period led to a certain aggravation of infection as evidenced by a greater accumulation of the agent in the central nervous system (CNS) and spleen, as well as by more pronounced ultramicroscopic changes in CNS. A single exposure to hypoxia failed to alter any manifestations of infection...

Hyberbaric oxygenation in altitude chambers OKA-MT was used in the complex of prophylactic measures against wound infection in 91 patients with open traumas of the extremities (fractures, amputations, etc.). The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on the external respiration was studied by the method of spirography. Tetrapolar rheography was used to follow the central hemodynamics. A number of immune parameteres were also studied. Hyperbaric oxygenation was established to abolish hyperventilation and myocardium hyperdynamia, to accelerate the recovery of the neutrophil phagocytic activity and immunoglobulin level, to contribute to the quicker diminishing of edema in the wound area and healing of the stump and open fracture without suppuration, early formation of dry necrosis with a distinct line of demarcation...
