Oviparous animals support reproduction via the incorporation of yolk as a nutrient source into the eggs. In Caenorhabditis elegans , however, yolk proteins seem dispensable for fecundity, despite constituting the vast majority of the embryonic protein pool and acting as carriers for nutrient-rich lipids. Here, we used yolk protein-deprived C. elegans mutants to gain insight into the traits that may yet be influenced by yolk rationing. We show that massive yolk provisioning confers a temporal advantage during embryogenesis, while also increasing early juvenile body size and promoting competitive fitness...

The α7 nicotinic receptors (NR) have been confirmed in the heart but their role in cardiac functions have been contradictory. To address these contradictory finding, we analyzed cardiac functions in α7 NR knockout mice (α7-/- ) in vivo and ex vivo in isolated hearts. A standard limb leads electrocardiogram was used and the pressure curves were recorded in vivo, in Arteria carotis and in the left ventricle, or ex vivo, in the left ventricle of the spontaneously beating isolated heart perfused following Langedorff's method...

BACKGROUND: The use of kidneys from "expanded criteria" donors after brain death (ECD) and uncontrolled donors after circulatory death (uDCD) has been warranted to increase the pool of donors for kidney transplantation (KT). However, there is lack of evidence on the feasibility and safety of KT from such donors in the Italian setting. METHODS: We queried our prospectively KT database to select patients undergoing KT from deceased donors (uDCDs, ECDs, and standard-criteria donors [SCD] after brain death) from January 2017 to December 2020, comparing the perioperative and mid-term functional outcomes...

Topographical anatomy and detailed measurements of the glandula thyroidea (thyroid gland) and the glandula parathyroidea (parathyroid gland) were determined in rats, with significant differences identified between the sexes. In the rats (N = 10 male, 10 female), the glandula thyroidea were positioned at the level of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. One glandula parathyroidea was present in each glandula thyroidea lobe, localized in the cranial part of the lateral lobes in 60% of the animals. There was no glandula thyroidea left lobe in one female and no isthmus in two females...

OBJECTIVES: Life-threatening cancer or other diseases can induce anxiety and depressive symptoms. We performed a systematic review with meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials assessing patients with cancer or other life-threatening diseases using validated anxiety and depression scales. METHODS: PubMed was searched up to November 15, 2022 and citations were applied to prespecified inclusion criteria. Disease rating scales for anxiety or depression included the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (STAI Trait [STAI-T], STAI-State [STAI-S]), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (HADS-Anxiety [HADS-A]; HADS-Depression [HADS-D]), Profile of Mood States (POMS), and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D or GRID-HAM-D-17)...

We propose a semi-automatic Scan-to-BIM reconstruction approach, making the most of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, for the classification of digital architectural heritage data. Nowadays, Heritage- or Historic-Building Information Modeling (H-BIM) reconstruction from laser scanning or photogrammetric surveys is a manual, time-consuming, overly subjective process, but the emergence of AI techniques, applied to the realm of existing architectural heritage, is offering new ways to interpret, process and elaborate raw digital surveying data, as point clouds...

Decoy receptor 3, is a member of the TNF receptor superfamily and associated with inflammation and atherosclerosis. The aim of our study is to determine the relationship, between serum DcR3 levels and inflammatory markers in patients with renal transplantation, those receiving dialysis treatment and cases with chronic renal failure that did not receive replacement therapy, and to evaluate their correlation with USG findings...

Cast nephropathy, monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition disease (MIDD), and light chain (AL) amyloidosis are the most common monoclonal immunoglobulin-mediated causes of renal injury. Cardiac involvement is also present in MM, characterized by restrictive cardiomyopathy generated by light chain deposit or amyloid. Thromboembolic complications such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism are also described...

Kidney transplantation (KT) is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease, providing a better survival rate and quality of life compared to dialysis. Despite the progress in the medical management of KT patients, from a purely surgical standpoint, KT has resisted innovations during the last 50 years. Recently, robot-assisted KT (RAKT) has been proposed as an alternative approach to open surgery, especially due to its potential benefits for fragile and immunocompromised recipients. It was not until 2014 that the role of RAKT has found value thanks to the pioneering Vattikuti Urology Institute-Medanta collaboration that conceptualized and developed a new surgical technique for RAKT following the Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment, Long-term follow-up recommendations for introducing surgical innovations into real-life practice...

Adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disease, caused by loss-of-function mutations in the ADA2 gene, and is considered a monogenic form of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) with frequently positive type I interferon (IFN-I) signature. Renal manifestations in ADA2 deficiency are poorly characterised. We herein report two cases of ADA2 deficiency with different kidney patterns due respectively to a predominantly macroscopic and microscopic vasculopathy, and review the literature on kidney disease in ADA2 deficiency...

One of the main risk factors for the presence of carotid stenosis and carotid-related stroke is age. The aim of this review article is to present the current state of knowledge on age-related vascular changes using carotid stenosis as an example.Vascular aging (vascular senescence) is a decrease of structural and functional properties of the vessel wall that takes place on different levels. At the multicellular level an increase in vessel volume and diameter as well as intima media thickness occurs with age mainly due to atherosclerotic changes in the vessel wall...

BACKGROUND: Angiography relates the residual lumen to the poststenotic distal lumen (NASCET criterion) and expresses the result in percent lumen reduction. This method is not applicable when there is a collapse of the distal lumen, as seen in severe stenosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the reduced poststenotic caliber could be an additional sonographic criterion for estimation of the degree of stenosis. METHODS: We measured the caliber of the distal lumen of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) in 57 patients with low-grade stenosis <50% (NASCET criterion), and in 57 patients with unilateral stenosis of ≥ 50 %...
