A 62-year-old woman, originally from Peru, with rheumatoid arthritis under treatment with anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy, was admitted due to constitutional syndrome and suspicion of neoplasia. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed involvement of three segments of the colon, ascites, and likely peritoneal implants. Ascitic fluid analysis showed elevated adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels and lymphocytosis. The patient presented with hematemesis and hematochezia with hemodynamic instability. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy identified an extensive ulcer in the middle esophagus with a granular base, elevated and defined edges, indeterminate for malignancy and without blood residues...

The discovery of alternative medicines with fewer adverse effects is urgently needed for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sophoridine (SR), the naturally occurring quinolizidine alkaloid isolated from the leguminous sophora species, has been demonstrated to possess a wide range of pharmacological activities. However, the effect of SR on RA remains unknown. In this study, the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)-induced fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) were utilized to investigate the inhibitory effect of SR on RA...

OBJECTIVES: Nephritis is a life-threatening complication of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), with membranous nephropathy (MN) being prevalent. Renal biopsy is the gold standard for MN diagnosis, but it is invasive and cannot be repeatedly performed. This study aimed to develop a nomogram for the prediction of MN in patients with pSS. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with pSS admitted to the Rheumatology and Immunology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University between January 2015 and January 2021...

Despite extensive research reveal rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is related to atherosclerosis (AS), common pathogenesis between these two diseases still needs to be explored. In current study, we explored the common pathogenesis between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and atherosclerosis (AS) by identifying 297 Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) associated with both diseases. Through KEGG and GO functional analysis, we highlighted the correlation of these DEGs with crucial biological processes such as the vesicle transport, immune system process, signaling receptor binding, chemokine signaling and many others...

Connective tissue disease-related interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD) is a frequent and serious complication of CTD, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, its pathogenesis remains poorly understood; however, one intriguing contributing factor may be the microbiome of the mouth and lungs. The oral microbiome, which is a major source of the lung microbiome through recurrent microaspiration, is altered in ILD patients. Moreover, in recent years, several lines of evidence suggest that changes in the oral and lung microbiota modulate the pulmonary immune response and thus may play a role in the pathogenesis of ILDs, including CTD-ILD...

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by TNF-α, which increases fibroblast-like synoviocytes inflammation, resulting in cartilage destruction. The current work sought to comprehend the pathophysiological importance of TNF-α stimulation on differential protein expression and their regulation by apigenin using in-vitro and in-vivo models of RA. METHODS: The human RA synovial fibroblast cells were stimulated with or without TNF-α (10 ng/ml) and treated with 40 μM apigenin...

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, there has been a global increase in the burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) among adolescents and young adults (AYAs), making it a significant public health issue. However, our understanding of the disease burden, harm, and influencing factors of RA in this population remains insufficient. This study aimed to assess the trends in RA burden among AYAs aged 10-24 years from 1990 to 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: Incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate per 100,000 population, as well as average annual percentage changes (AAPCs), of RA among individuals aged 10-24 years were reported globally, regionally, and nationally based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019)...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A global study of multimorbidity in schizophrenia, especially of the association with physical conditions, might offer much needed etiological insights. RECENT FINDINGS: Our review suggests that life-style factors and medication related to schizophrenia are only part of the explanation of the increase in risk for cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary disorders, and some cancers. Positive associations with autoimmune disorders (with the exception of rheumatoid arthritis) and epilepsy are promising avenues of research but to date have not been fully exploited...

Osteoclast hyperactivation stands as a significant pathological factor contributing to the emergence of bone disorders driven by heightened oxidative stress levels. The modulation of the redox balance to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) emerges as a viable approach in addressing this concern. Selenoproteins, characterized by selenocysteine (SeCys2 ) as the active center, are crucial for selenium-based antioxidative stress therapy for inflammatory diseases. This study reveals that surface-active elemental selenium (Se) nanoparticles, particularly those derived from lentinan (LNT-Se), exhibit enhanced cellular accumulation and accelerated metabolism to SeCys2 , the primary active Se form in biological systems...

Cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 (CYSLTR1) is observed to increase in psoriatic skin lesions. Montelukast, a CYSLTR1 antagonist, effectively treats inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and atopic dermatitis. Thus, blocking CYSLTR1 may be a promising strategy for psoriasis immunotherapy. We prepared a montelukast sodium cream and solution and investigated their effects on psoriasis-like skin lesions induced by imiquimod (IMQ).
