BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia is a common and significant infection, associated with high rates of mortality. Therefore, early identification is important for the initiation of appropriate treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of blood culture Gram staining along with the finding of an 'oozing sign' to diagnose either Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative staphylococci. METHODS: This single-centre, prospective observational study was performed from May 2017 to November 2017...

The T2Candida assay is a novel, non-culture-based assay for the diagnosis of candidemia directly from whole blood. The impact of antifungals on the performance of the T2Candida assay and blood culture bottles has not been well described. In this study, the performance of the T2Candida assay was compared to that of blood culture in detecting Candida spp. in spiked blood cultures with or without the presence of antifungals. Clinical bloodstream isolates of Candida spp. were inoculated into human whole blood at low (1 to 5 cells/ml) and high (10 to 50 cells/ml) concentrations with or without the presence of caspofungin and fluconazole...

Sepsis is the leading cause of death among patients in intensive care units (ICUs) requiring an early diagnosis to introduce efficient therapeutic intervention. Rapid identification (ID) of a causative pathogen is key to guide directed antimicrobial selection and was recently shown to reduce hospitalization length in ICUs. Direct processing of positive blood cultures by MALDI-TOF MS technology is one of the several currently available tools used to generate rapid microbial ID. However, all recently published protocols are still manual and time consuming, requiring dedicated technician availability and specific strategies for batch processing...

The capacity of absorbent beads in BacT/ALERT® FA Plus and BACTEC® Aerobic/F Plus blood culture bottles to bind and neutralize antibiotics was compared. Binding was established using reverse-phase HPLC, and inactivation was based on the recovery of susceptible test stains from simulated blood cultures. The FA Plus medium demonstrated more rapid and better overall binding kinetics for each drug tested, resulting in significantly better overall recovery rates. Differences in time to detection favored the FA Plus medium for three drug/organism combinations and Aerobic/F Plus for two...

Corneal culture medium in combination with an antibiotics degrading enzyme were injected in resin containing test bottles of the BacT/Alert system named FA plus (intended for aerobic microorganisms) or FN plus (intended for anaerobic microorganisms) depending on their aerobic or anaerobic nature...
