BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no standard option for local salvage treatment for local prostate cancer recurrence after radiotherapy. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility and efficiency of Robotic Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) in this clinical setting. METHODS/MATERIALS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who were treated at our institution with SBRT for local prostate cancer recurrence after External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) or brachytherapy...

BACKGROUND: Airborne allergic contact dermatitis caused by paints containing isothiazolinones has been recognized as a health hazard. OBJECTIVES: To collect epidemiological, clinical and patch test data on airborne allergic contact dermatitis caused by isothiazolinone-containing paints in France and Belgium. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective study was initiated by the Dermatology and Allergy Group of the French Society of Dermatology, including methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)/methylisothiazolinone (MI)- and/or MI-sensitized patients who developed airborne allergic contact dermatitis following exposure to isothiazolinone-containing paint...

In November 2013, a woman with Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome was diagnosed with a locally advanced left cervical adenocarcinoma. The patient's malformation consisted of two uteri with two cervixes, a obstructed vagina, and a left renal agenesis. Classification FIGO: stage IIIa because of infiltration of the inferior third of the vagina wall. Locoregional management comprised an infrarenal lateral aortic lymphadenectomy followed by concomitant radio-chemotherapy to the pelvic (inguinal, pelvic, and infrarenal para aortic nodes) volumes...

A surface imaging system, Catalyst (C-Rad), was compared with laser-based positioning and daily mega voltage computed tomography (MVCT) setup for breast patients with nodal involvement treated by helical TomoTherapy. Catalyst-based positioning performed better than laser-based positioning. The respective modalities resulted in a standard deviation (SD), 68% confidence interval (CI) of positioning of left-right, craniocaudal, anterior-posterior, roll: 2.4 mm, 2.7 mm, 2.4 mm, 0.9° for Catalyst positioning, and 6...

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is the accurate, conformal delivery of high-dose radiation to well-defined targets while minimizing normal structure doses via steep dose gradients. While inverse treatment planning (ITP) with computerized optimization algorithms are routine, many aspects of the planning process remain user-dependent. We performed an international, multi-institutional benchmark trial to study planning variability and to analyze preferable ITP practice for spinal robotic radiosurgery. 10 SRS treatment plans were generated for a complex-shaped spinal metastasis with 21 Gy in 3 fractions and tight constraints for spinal cord (V14Gy<2 cc, V18Gy<0...

AIM: To provide a multi-institutional description of current practices of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for head and neck cancer. MATERIALS & METHODS: 15 international institutions with significant experience in head and neck SBRT were asked to complete a questionnaire covering clinical and technical factors. RESULTS: SBRT is used 10-100% of the time for recurrent primary head and neck cancer, and 0-10% of the time in newly diagnosed disease...

PURPOSE: Image-guided radiotherapy for prostate cancer is widely used in radiotherapy departments. Intraprostatic gold fiducial markers are used to visualize prostate position and motion before and during treatment. The aim of this report is to describe our experience of implanting intraprostatic fiducial markers under local anesthesia before hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for prostate cancer and to assess its tolerance and reproducibility. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over a 6 and a half year period, 226 patients with prostate cancer received a stereotactic radiotherapy using the CyberKnife(®) system (Accuray) in our institution...

INTRODUCTION: Macro-AST is recognized as a classical aetiology of isolated and persistent increase of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels. Macro-AST are high molecular weight complexes associating AST and a macromolecule, often an immunoglobulin. Although those macroenzymes of unknown pathogenesis are usually non-pathogenic, association with several diseases, including autoimmune diseases and liver diseases has been described. CASE REPORT: We report here the case of a 45-year-old patient with previously normal liver enzymes in whom an AST elevation and an IgA monoclonal gammopathy were discovered concomitantly...

PURPOSE: The main focus of the current paper is the clinical implementation of a Monte Carlo based platform for treatment plan validation for Tomotherapy and Cyberknife, without adding additional tasks to the dosimetry department. METHODS: The Monte Carlo platform consists of C++ classes for the actual functionality and a web based GUI that allows accessing the system using a web browser. Calculations are based on BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc and/or GATE and are performed automatically after exporting the dicom data from the treatment planning system...

After the liver and lungs, bones are the third most common sites of cancer metastasis. Palliative radiotherapy for secondary bone tumours helps relieve pain, improve the quality of life and reduce the risk of fractures. Stereotactic body radiotherapy can deliver high radiation doses with very tight margins, which has significant advantages when treating tumours close to the spinal cord. Strict quality control is essential as dose gradient at the edge of the spinal cord is important. Optimal schedule is not defined...

PURPOSE: Evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of interstitial brachytherapy (IBT) after external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or radio chemotherapy (RCT) for the treatment of anal canal cancers (ACC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 01, 1990 to 01, 2013, 103 patients (p) with ACC were treated with IBT after EBRT or RCT at our institution. Tumor node metastasis stage included Tis (1 p), T1 (18 p), T2 (46 p), T3 (33 p), and T4 (5 p). There was a lymph node involvement in 19 p...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to analyze the results of exclusive interstitial brachytherapy (IBT) as a conservative approach in the treatment of penile cancer confined to the glans or the shaft with long-term follow-up in a single institution. MATERIALS/METHODS: Between July 1992 and November 2013, 73 consecutive patients with non-metastatic invasive penile cancer were treated by Low dose rate (LDR) IBT in our institution. The localization of the primary lesion was glands in 67 patients (91...

Polymer films with hierarchical micro- and nano-porosities were prepared by combining the fast solvent evaporation "Breath Figure" (BF) method, exhibiting a highly regular honeycomb micro-porous texture, with the additional nanoscale self-assembly of polylactide-block-polystyrene (PLA-b-PS) diblock copolymers, PLA being used thereafter as a sacrificial component for nano-porosity.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment for recurrent ependymomas is not defined. Re- irradiation has been proposed but its modalities and results are still to be explored. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From June 1994 to December 2013, 32 pediatric patients with ependymoma were re-irradiated for local (n = 15) or metastatic (n = 17) relapses. Files were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Local relapses were treated with hypofractionated focal radiotherapy (hypoFFRT) (n = 8) or focal fractionated radiotherapy (FFRT) (n = 7)...
