INTRODUCTION: Acquired external auditory canal (EAC) atresia is a very rare condition, especially due to direct trauma. The challenge lies in the difficulty of treatment and the tendency to recur even after a long period. Here we present a case report of treatment of recurrent EAC atresia resulting from a dog bite using a silicone stent prosthesis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old, bitten by a dog, suffered severe head injuries, including scalp avulsion and left auricle avulsion...

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac lymphoma is an extremely rare malignant lymphoma, with clinical manifestations related to its location. We reported the diagnosis and treatment of primary cardiac lymphoma in a patient presented with atrioventricular block. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64 year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of symptoms of a tired heart and shortness of breath. The initial electrocardiogram revealed a third-degree atrioventricular block. Computed tomography scan showed an irregularly shaped right heart, irregular clusters, and relatively weakly enhanced areas in the right auricle, atrium, and ventricle...

Microtia and anotia are congenital auricular anomalies that negatively impact the psychosocial development of those affected. Because auricular cartilage is a type of elastic cartilage that lacks regenerative capacity, any notable defect in its structure requires a surgical approach to reconstructing the auricle. While there are several reconstructive options available between alloplastic and prosthetic implants, autologous rib cartilage grafts remain the most commonly used treatment modality. Still, this widely used technique is accompanied by significant patient discomfort in a young child and carries additional risks secondary to the traumatic process of rib cartilage extraction, such as pneumothorax and chest wall deformities, and the final esthetic results may not be ideal...

HYPOTHESIS: Unilateral costal cartilage harvesting (UCCH) for auricle reconstruction in children tends to cause thoracic deformities. Therefore, our study aimed to develop a novel bilateral costal cartilage harvesting (BCCH) method to prevent and reduce thoracic deformities. METHODS: Patients with unilateral microtia who underwent either UCCH (n = 50) or BCCH (n = 46) were enrolled in this study. The grafts for the BCCH group were harvested from the 6th costal cartilage of the ipsilateral hemithorax and the 7th and 8th cartilage from the other hemithorax...

The subtype of eccrine carcinoma known as squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is rare; only 38 cases, including only 6 cases in the ear, have been documented in the literature. This may be the first case to focus on the fact that SEDC, located within the dermal and subcutaneous layers, spares the epidermis histopathologically, which can cause clinicians to confuse SEDC with acute perichondritis.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, radial cartilage incision (first-stage) at an early age combined with free auricular composite tissue grafting (second-stage) can effectively correct the concha-type microtia with the moderate or severe folded cartilage in the middle and upper third auricle, but radial cartilage incision's effects on the growth of the ear remain to be determined. The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of radial cartilage incision in young rabbits model. METHODS: Ten New Zealand white rabbits were included in our experiment...

BACKGROUND: Both noninvasive transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) and traditional medical practice (TMP), such as auriculotherapy, use the auricle as a starting point for stimulation, but with two different conceptual frameworks: taVNS depends on vagal afferences to account for its effects, whereas TMP requires stimulation of the ear with high topographical accuracy regardless of the afferent nerves. The aim of this study was to measure heart rate variability (HRV) and cold water-induced vasodilation (CIVD) after puncturing two different ear points with the same afference but that should have opposite effects according to TMP...

Reconstruction of a full-thickness defect of the auricle's anterior surface represents a challenge for plastic surgeons. This report describes the case of a man in his 70s, who underwent radical excision of a squamous cell carcinoma involving his right antihelix. We adopted an innovative approach for the reconstruction of the antihelix, using a tunnelled preauricular flap reinforced with an ipsilateral concha cartilage graft. The flap's base was de-epithelialised, allowing a single-stage procedure. Three months postoperation, no complications arose, and the scars at the donor site were effectively concealed...

Extensive skin graft necrosis after auricle reconstruction surgery is a thorny problem for plastic surgeons. Four unilateral microtia patients were enrolled for extensive skin graft necrosis after ear elevation surgery. Early debridement and daily dressing changes were important for preoperative preparation. Surgical treatments involved local flaps and secondary split-thickness skin graft. After 3 to 12 months of follow-up, clear surface structures and obvious auricular sulcus were shown in all 4 patients. No cartilage exposure, skin necrosis, healing impairment, or other complications were found...

BACKGROUND: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) often exhibit susceptibilities to multiple autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, primary sclerosing cholangitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This propensity likely stems from common pathogenic mechanisms underlying immune-mediated conditions. This report highlights the occurrence of autoimmune thyroid disease during UC exacerbations. Notably, the patient displayed petrified auricles...

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), an effective chemotherapeutic agent for many solid tumors, has long been reported to cause pigmentation in patients treated intravenously, which occurs with increasing frequency of administration and decreases the QOL of the patients. Although melanin accumulation is thought to be the cause, the mechanism of pigmentation induced by 5-FU administration remains unclear, and there is no effective treatment for this problem. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of pigmentation induced by continuous 5-FU administration in 9-week-old male HRM-2 hairless mice for 8 weeks by focusing on the blood vessels for basic verification...

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease that causes progressive and recurrent destruction of cartilage in the auricles, eyes, nose, and airways. A 90-year-old man was brought to the emergency department with fever, low SpO2 , and effortful breathing. Arterial blood gas analysis showed that PaCO2 levels had accumulated to 120 mmHg. Although CT showed marked thickening of the bronchial wall from the central to the peripheral region, the cause was unknown. At the family's request, the patient was not placed on a ventilator, and treatment was started with steroids alone...

A woman presented with a painless swelling in front of her right auricle, which, on examination, seemed to be a hard, immobile mass arising from the right parotid gland. CT scan showed a heterogeneously enhancing mass lesion in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland with partial extension into the deep lobe. Fine needle aspiration cytology suggested a high-grade transformation (HGT) with the presence of bizarre tumour cells. She underwent a right-sided total parotidectomy with transient facial neuropraxia in the postoperative period...
