BACKGROUND: In 1973, Saunders T. Frank described the diagonal earlobe crease (DELC) as a potential marker of cardiovascular disease. However, this anatomical finding is not routinely examined. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of this crease in the general population attending a dental setting and describe its anatomical variations to be able to categorize it as a physical sign. METHODOLOGY: A study group of 1050 white adults were selected, as participants in the framework of the "A Estrada Study of Glycation and Inflammation" (AEGIS), a cross-sectional, population-based descriptive study of a representative sample of the general adult population of the municipality of A Estrada (Pontevedra, Spain)...

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma with a high rate of metastasis. MCC is rarely suspected during clinical examination, thus requiring biopsy to establish a pathologic diagnosis. In addition, MCC sometimes occurs in double primary cancers. Although there have been reviews on double primary cancers, only a few cases involving MCC have been described. Herein, we report a case of a 54-year-old female patient who presented to our clinic with a diagnosis of earlobe MCC following an excisional biopsy performed by another clinic...

Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) using the fingers may have important limitations due to Raynaud's phenomenon and sclerodactyly in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Sensors located at more central body positions may be more accurate as these as less prone to Raynaud attacks. To determine the validity and reliability of the SpO2 measured at the finger, forehead, and earlobe during the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). Eighty two patients with SSc had an arterial line placed while performing the 6MWT. Peripheral oxygen saturation was simultaneously measured by finger, forehead, and earlobe sensors and compared to the arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2 ) measured before and after the 6MWT...

Hermann Heck, Henning Wackerhage
The maximal lactate steady state, abbreviated as MLSS, is the maximal exercise intensity where the concentration of earlobe capillary or arterial blood lactate remains constant over time. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, we (i.e. Hermann Heck and co-workers) developed a direct test to determine the MLSS to investigate whether it occurred at a lactate concentration of 4 mmol.L- 1 , as earlier predicted by Alois Mader and colleagues. The test consisted of each participant performing several constant-intensity running bouts of ≈ 30 min at intensities close to the estimated MLSS...

Objective Earlobe crease (ELC) is an easily detectable physical sign of cardiovascular risk and coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the relationship between ELC and CAD severity in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requiring urgent clinical judgment is unknown. Using the residual synergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with taxus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) score, we investigated the relationship between ELC and anatomical severity of CAD. Methods, patients or materials We studied 219 consecutive patients with STEMI (median age, 71 years old) and divided them into 2 groups according to the presence of ELC (ELC group, n=161; non-ELC group, n=58)...

BACKGROUND: Giant keratoacanthoma, a rare variant solitary of keratoacanthoma is characterized by a diameter exceeding 20 mm, rapid growth, and destruction of underlying tissue. Traditionally, it has been considered to be a self-resolving or low-grade squamous proliferation. Due to their atypical appearance, Giant keratoacanthomas may present a diagnostic challenge. Histopathological examination remains the reference standard for distinguishing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) from keratoacanthoma...

Defects with multiple aesthetic subunits may need specific approaches for each subunit. We present a case of a post-surgical defect in a patient who underwent Mohs micrographic surgery for an invasive melanoma of the earlobe with an exposed parotid gland. We utilized a retroauricular-based rhomboid flap to provide full and immediate coverage for earlobe reconstruction in the setting of insufficient infra-auricular recruitable skin. The addition of Z-plasties at the base of an interpolation flap may reduce rotational restraint, thereby improving perfusion while enhancing flap extension for complete wound coverage where there is a lack of abundant donor tissue...

OBJECTIVE: Given the lack of specific evaluation indices, it is difficult to determine whether to transpose or abandon remnant ears in lobule-type microtia reconstruction. The authors illuminate referable parameters beneficial for proper treatment of remnant ear in an efficient manner. METHODS: A series of 359 lobule-type microtia patients underwent autogenous costal cartilage auricular reconstruction between 2016 and 2021. Fourteen measuring points and defined distances as well as six ratios of specific distances based on position, plumpness, similarity and the width-to-length ratio of the remnant ear have been described, and relevant tactics for appropriate treatments are introduced...

INTRODUCTION: An excessive proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis after an injury may lead to a benign fibrous tumor, known as keloid, which does not regress spontaneously. Earlobes are a very frequent site of onset, since after a trauma (i.e., piercing) keloids may develop either on the helix and on the anterior or posterior lobe, from a few months up to several years after the injury. OBJECTIVES: To report the effectiveness of a combined protocol of CO2 laser + Dye laser + a portable Blue LED Light medical device for Photobiomodulation Therapy (EmoLED®)...

We compared the genomes of multiple domestic chicken breeds with red and white earlobes to identify the differentiated regions between groups of breeds differing in earlobe color. This was done using a selective sweep mapping approach based on whole-genome sequence data. The most significant selective sweep was identified on chromosome 11, where the white earlobe chicken breeds originated from Mediterranean share a common haplotype, and where multiple candidate genes are located. The most plausible functional candidate gene is the Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R), a receptor known to regulate pigmentation in the skin and hair, and it is also the gene with the strongest positional support from the haplotype-based analyses...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Clinical manifestations of rosacea include transient or persistent facial erythema, telangiectasia, papules, and pustules. The existing assessment tools primarily evaluate the facial area to assess the severity of rosacea. However, in addition to the face, telangiectasia, erythema, and flushing can occur in the ear. Here, we investigated the correlation between the dermoscopic characteristics of capillaries in the earlobe and auricle and the types and severity of rosacea...
