Despite progress in bone tissue engineering, reconstruction of large bone defects remains an important clinical challenge. Here, we developed a biomaterial designed to recruit bone cells, endothelial cells, and neuronal fibers within the same matrix, enabling bone tissue regeneration. The bioactive matrix is based on modified elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) grafted with laminin-derived adhesion peptides IKVAV and YIGSR, and the SNA15 peptide for retention of hydroxyapatite (HA) particles. The composite matrix shows suitable porosity, interconnectivity, biocompatibility for endothelial cells, and the ability to support neurites outgrowth by sensory neurons...

Despite its potential significance, "cluster chemistry" remains a somewhat marginalized topic within the chemistry field. However, atomic clusters with their unusual and unique structures and properties represent a novel material group situated between molecules and nanoparticles or solid matter, judging from both scientific standpoints and historical backgrounds. Surveying an entire material group, including all substances that can be regarded as a cluster, is essential for establishing cluster chemistry as a more prominent chemistry field...

Scandium oxide (Sc2 O3 ) has a wide range of applications in metallurgy, chemical industry, electronics and many other high-tech fields. However, most Sc2 O3 materials exist in the powder or bulk form, while nanostructured Sc2 O3 has rarely been reported as there is a lack of a common method to control its dimensionality, hindering the understanding of new properties and potential applications of nano-Sc2 O3 materials. In this paper, we establish a procedure to synthesize a two-dimensional (2D) Sc2 O3 -covalent organic framework (COF) composite film where the crystal size of Sc2 O3 domains is as small as ∼3 nm...

Ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated to be advantageous for the separation and purification of light hydrocarbons such as C2 H2 , C2 H4 , and CH4 . The introduction of transition metal sites with strong π-complexation affinity into MOFs is more effective than other adsorption sites for the selective adsorption of π-electron-rich unsaturated hydrocarbon gases from their mixtures. However, lower coordination numbers make it challenging to produce robust MOFs directly utilizing metal ions with π-coordination activity, such as Cu+ , Ag+ , and Pd2+ ...

In this study, two novel donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers are designed and synthesized, DTBT-2T and DTBT-2T2F with 2,2'-bithiophene or 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene as the donor unit and dithienobenzothiadiazole as the acceptor unit, and used them as donor materials in non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs). Due to enhanced planarity of polymer chains resulted by the intramolecular F···S noncovalent interactions, the incorporation of 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene unit instead of 2,2'-bithiophene into the polymers can enhance their molecular packing, crystallinity and hole mobility...

There is a rising need to create high-performing, affordable electrocatalysts in the new field of oxygen electrochemistry. Here, a cost-effective, activity-modulated electrocatalyst with the capacity to trigger both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline environment is presented. The catalyst (Al, Co/N-rGCNT) is made up of aluminium, nitrogen-dual-doped reduced graphene oxide sheets co-existing with cobalt-encapsulated carbon nanotube units. Based on X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) studies, it is established that the superior reaction kinetics in Al, Co/N-rGCNT over their bulk counterparts can be attributed to their electronic regulation...

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of certain moulds, prevalent in 60-80% of food crops and many processed products but challenging to eliminate. Consuming mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed can lead to various adverse effects on humans and livestock. Therefore, testing mycotoxin residue levels is critical to ensure food safety. Gold standard analytical methods rely on liquid chromatography coupled with optical detectors or mass spectrometers, which are high-cost with limited capacity. This study reported the successful development of a microfluidic "lab-on-a-chip" device to enrich and detect zearalenone in food samples based on the fluorescence quenching effect of quantum dots and selective affinity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs)...

We study the origin of bimodal emission in AlGaN/AlN QD superlattices displaying a high internal quantum efficiency (around 50%) in the 230-300 nm spectral range. The secondary emission at longer wavelengths is linked to the presence of cone-like domains with deformed QD layers, which originate at the first AlN buffer/superlattice interface and propagate vertically. The cones originate at a 30°-faceted shallow pit in the AlN, which appears to be associated with a threading dislocation that produces strong shear strain...
