multi-focal IOL

Michael Lawless, Shveta Jindal Bali, Chris Hodge, Timothy V Roberts, Colin Chan, Gerard Sutton
PURPOSE: To report the visual and refractive outcomes in an initial series of eyes undergoing femtosecond laser cataract surgery with implantation of a diffractive multi-focal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: The first 61 consecutive eyes undergoing femtosecond laser cataract surgery and ReSTOR (Alcon Laboratories Inc) +3.00-diopter (D) add IOL implantation between May and July 2011 were enrolled in the study (LCS group). The control group consisted of a retrospective consecutive cohort of 29 eyes that underwent manual phacoemulsification cataract surgery and ReSTOR +3...

BACKGROUND: Restoration of functional distance and near vision independently of additional correction remains a goal for cataract surgery. ReSTOR, a new multi-focal intraocular lens (IOL) addresses this issue with an improvement in both distance and near vision, often without need for glasses. This analysis attempted to discuss the patient-reported benefit of ReSTOR using a full but organised representation of data. METHODS: Two non-randomised, open-label clinical trials conducted in Europe and the United-States were conducted to compare the efficacy of ReSTOR to AcrySof mono-focal IOLs...

BACKGROUND: The Array-MIOL offers the advantage of an increased depth of focus; the aim of our study was to compare other functional results with those of a monofocal IOL. METHODS: Uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuity were measured in the early postoperative period and after 3 months. Results of contrast acuity (Regan charts) and contrast sensitivity (BVAT II-SG video acuity tester) of the Array-MIOL and a monofocal IOL were compared at the 3-months follow-up...

Contrast imaging of new multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) designs with 5 and 7 refractive zones was examined by in vitro measurement of the modulation transfer function (MTF) and by testing contrast sensitivity with Regan 96% and 11% contrast sensitivity charts after "optical implantation" of MIOLs in 20 healthy subjects by means of a new optical device developed by Reiner. The results were compared with those obtained with a monofocal IOL and a diffractive MIOL. We found that the MTF of both refractive MIOLs showed a reduction in contrast at corresponding spatial frequencies compared with the monofocal and with the diffractive IOL, resulting in a Strehl ratio of below 30%...

BACKGROUND: Due to theoretical considerations an increase in the depth of field of the diffractive IOL may be combined with a reduction in contrast sensitivity, glare sensitivity and colour perception. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A comparative analysis of both eyes was performed in ten patients with a diffractive multifocal IOL (3M 815LE) in one eye and a monofocal IOL in the other eye. Contrast sensitivity was examined by computer generated sine wave gratings of 6 different spatial frequencies; visual acuity with glare and glare sensitivity were determined under 7 different levels of field luminance; colour vision was examined using the Farnsworth-Munsell-100-Hue-test...
