On March 11, 2020, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) as a pandemic. The spread and evolution of the pandemic is overwhelming the healthcare systems of dozens of countries and has led to a myriad of opinion papers, contingency plans, case series and emerging trials. Covering all this literature is complex. Briefly and synthetically, in line with the previous recommendations of the Working Groups, the Spanish Society of Intensive, Critical Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC) has prepared this series of basic recommendations for patient care in the context of the pandemic...

INTRODUCTION: The incorporation of the clinic and the imaging allow a better understanding of anatomy. The aim of this work is to develop a rapid prototype in synthetic material that replicates anatomical details to be used in teaching and surgical training in Pediatrics. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Presentation of case-one year old female with respiratory distress syndrome. In the endoscopic examination was found a distal tracheal compression. The angiotomography confirmed the presence of a vascular malformation...

Objective: to identify in the literature the gains health students and professionals perceive when using clinical simulation with dramatization resources. Method: integrative literature review, using the method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). A search was undertaken in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Web of Science, National Library of Medicine, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, Scientific Electronic Library Online...

Using Michel Foucault's lectures on "Psychiatric power" as its starting point, this article analyzes the book Simulación de la locura (The simulation of madness), published in 1903 by the Argentine psychiatrist José Ingenieros. Foucault argues that the problem of simulation permeates the entire history of modern psychiatry. After initial analysis of José Ingenieros's references to the question of simulation in the struggle for existence, the issue of simulation in pathological states in general is examined, and lastly the simulation of madness and the problem of degeneration...

Through a simulation study, we estimated the potential effects of better detection of hypertension and improved screening for alcohol problems with subsequent interventions. Results showed that if 50% of Spanish males between 40 and 64 years of age who are currently unaware of their hypertension become aware of their condition and receive the usual treatment, and 50% of these males with hypertension are screened for alcohol and are treated for hazardous drinking or alcohol use disorders, then the percentage of uncontrolled hypertension among men with hypertension decreases from 61...

Objectives: to evaluate the cognitive learning of nursing students in neonatal clinical evaluation from a blended course with the use of computer and laboratory simulation; to compare the cognitive learning of students in a control and experimental group testing the laboratory simulation; and to assess the extracurricular blended course offered on the clinical assessment of preterm infants, according to the students. Method: a quasi-experimental study with 14 Portuguese students, containing pretest, midterm test and post-test...

The genetic contributions of the Arabian horse and the Austrian and German Haflingers to the registered Italian Haflinger are analysed by studying proportionate founder genetic contribution and by simulating Mendelian segregation of the founder alleles at an hypothetical locus. The Arabian proportionate contribution from the early 1960s is stabilized around 0.044, the Austrian Haflinger from the 1970s is around 0.03 and German Haflinger is always less than 0.001. The extinction probability of the Arabian gene pool reaches 0...

The effects of excluding a set of random effects (U-effects) uncorrelated to breeding values (BV) on prediction error variance (PEV) is studied analytically. Two situations are considered for model comparison: (a) existence of a 'true' model, (b) uncertainty about which of the competing models is 'true'. Models compared are the 'long' one, which includes BV + U-effects, and the 'short' one which includes BV's as the only random systematic effect. Expressions for PEV(BV) were obtained for the long model (PEVL); the short model (PEVS); and the short model assuming the long model is the correct one (PEVSI)...

Monte Carlo simulation and analytical calculations were used to study the effect of selection on genetic correlation between two traits. The simulated breeding program was based on a closed adult multiple ovulation and embryo transfer nucleus breeding scheme. Selection was on an index calculated using multi-trait animal model (AM). Analytical formulae applicable to any evaluation method were derived to predict change in genetic (co)variance due to selection under multi-trait selection using different evaluation methods...

Patient safety constitutes one of the main objectives in health care. Among other recommendations, such as the creation of training centres and the development of patient safety programmes, of great importance is the creation of training programmes for work teams using medical simulation. Medical simulation is defined as "a situation or environment created to allow persons to experience a representation of a real event for the purpose of practice, learning, evaluation or to understand systems or human actions"...

BACKGROUND: Fourteen years after the reform to Colombia's health system, the promises of universality, improved equity, efficiency, and better quality of care have not materialized. Remote areas remain underserved and access to care very limited. Recognizing teleconsultation as an effective way to improve access to health care and health information, a noncommercial open-access Web-based application for teleconsultation called Doctor Chat was developed. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to report the experience of the Center for Virtual Education and Simulation eHealth (Centro de Educación Virtual y Simulación e-Salud) with open-access Web-based asynchronous teleconsultation for consumers in Colombia...
