Tricholoma matsutake (pine mushroom, PM) is a prized mushroom in Asia due to its unique flavor and pine aroma. The fruiting body of PM forms only in its natural habitat (pine forest), and little is known regarding the natural conditions required for successful generation of the fruiting bodies in this species. Recent studies suggest that microbial interactions may be associated with the growth of PM; however, there have been few studies of the bacterial effects on PM growth. In this study, we surveyed which bacteria can directly and indirectly promote the growth of PM by using co-cultures with PM and molds associated with the fruiting body...

Commercial scale production of biofuels from lignocellulosic feed stocks has been hampered by the resistance of plant cell walls to enzymatic conversion, primarily owing to lignin. This study investigated whether DypB, the lignin-degrading peroxidase from Rodococcus jostii, depolymerizes lignin and reduces recalcitrance in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana). The protein was targeted to the cytosol or the ER using ER-targeting and retention signal peptides. For each construct, five independent transgenic lines were characterized phenotypically and genotypically...

The wastewater originating from explosives manufacturing plants are characterized by a high concentration of nitrates (3200mgNL(-1)), sulfates (1470mgL(-1)) and low pH (1.5) as well as the presence of organic compounds, such as nitroglycerin (1.9mgL(-1)) and nitroglycol (4.8mgL(-1)). The application of glycerol (C/N=3) at such a high concentration enabled complete removal of nitrates and did not cause the anaerobic glycerol metabolic pathway of the DNC4 consortium to activate, as confirmed by the low concentrations of 1,3-propanediol (0...

The metabolism of cyclohexanes by Rodococcus sp. EC1 was investigated using a sequential tracking method of degradation intermediate. Evidence for the formation of cyclohexanol, cyclohexaone, 2-cyclohexen-1-one, and phenol was presented. EC1 metabolized cyclohexane to phenol by aromatization of 2-cyclohexen-1-one, and furthermore gamma-butyrolactone as an intermediate of 2-cyclohexen-1-one was formed. Aromatization by EC1 was confirmed using tetrahydrofuran. Tetrahydrofuran was metabolized through aromatization reaction, involving furan and 2,3-dihydrofuran as key intermediates...
