To avoid predation by visual predators, caterpillars can be cryptic to decrease detectability or aposematic to warn predators of potential unpalatability. However, for some species, it is not clear if conspicuous patches are selected to avoid predation. For example, Pandora sphinx ( Eumorpha pandorus , Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) caterpillars are assumed to be palatable and have both cryptic (green, brown) and conspicuous (orange, red) color morphs. Five lateral, off-white to yellow patches on either side may serve as a warning for predators or to draw attention away from the caterpillar's form to function as distractive marks...

Robin sequence is a congenital issue resulting in airway obstruction, difficulty feeding, and failure to thrive. Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis is used to improve airway obstruction in these patients, but little data exists characterizing feeding outcomes following surgery. This study aims to evaluate feeding outcomes and weight gain following mandibular distraction for airway correction in infants. A single-center retrospective chart review was conducted, and patients under 12 months old who underwent mandibular distraction between December 2015 and July 2021 were included in the study...

Severe midface and maxillary hypoplasia can have an impact on an individual, either on the appearance, functions or psychologically. Based on literature review, severe maxillary hypoplasia with more than 25.0mm reverse overjet in non-cleft and non-syndromic patients is very rare. It is more often seen in cleft lip and palate and syndromic patients. When the magnitude of correction exceeds the limit of what a single orthognathic surgery can achieve, multiple surgeries would be required, involving different surgical techniques...

Posterior cranial vault distraction osteogenesis (PCVDO) is a relatively new paradigm in the treatment of syndromic craniosynostosis, having first been introduced in 2009. PCVDO directly addresses the underdeveloped cranial vault and appears to allow for a larger increase in intracranial volume when compared to traditional techniques. Although reported as safe in the literature, critical appraisal is still required as PCVDO is a relatively uncommon procedure that may require greater numbers to detect true complication rates...

Anterior maxillary distraction osteogenesis (AMDO) surgery for cleft lip and palate involves distraction of a segment of the anterior maxilla and advancement using 2 intraoral buccal bone-borne distraction devices. The anterior part of the maxilla is advanced anteriorly with less relapse which increases maxillary length and does not affect speech. We aimed to evaluate the effects of AMDO, including lateral cephalometric changes. Seventeen patients who had undergone this procedure were included in this retrospective study...

Early mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) can decrease upper airway and feeding complications in pediatric patients with micrognathia; however, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complications like TMJ ankylosis (TMJA) may occur. TMJA can disturb pediatric patients' function and craniofacial growth, resulting in significant physical and psychosocial consequences. Additional surgical procedures may also be required, increasing the burden of care on patients and their families. CMF surgeons must discuss the potential complications of early MDO surgery with families as well as potential solutions should these problems occur...

OBJECTIVE: Posterior cranial distraction (PCD) is a surgical technique to address craniosynostosis, especially in syndromic patients. The technique has the ability to significantly expand the cranium, while requiring minimal dural dissection, compared to cranial remodeling. Our goals were to determine the patient characteristics and surgical outcomes of PCD. The two questions that we sought to answer were: 1) What is the average published complication rate and the most common complications of PCD? and 2) How much intracranial volume expansion can one expect with PCD? DESIGN: A PubMed database search of articles on PCD was performed...

Currently, maxillary transverse deficiency are considered to be an important pathogenic factor of OSAHS. For patients with poor compliance with positive airway pressure therapy, rapid maxillary expansion can increase the volume and ventilation of the upper respiratory tract, which is an alternative treatment...
