OBJECTIVE: Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare entity of childhood characterized by benign myofibroblastic tumors in the soft tissues, the bones, and occasionally the viscera. Solitary skeletal lesions are relatively uncommon. Calvarial involvement should be distinguished from more aggressive tumors for appropriate treatment. METHODS: We reviewed solitary infantile myofibroma of the calvarium and discussed the relevant computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings along with differential diagnosis...

BACKGROUND: When deep brain stimulation (DBS) infections are identified, they are often too advanced to treat without complete hardware removal. New objective markers to promptly identify DBS infections are needed. We present a patient with GPi (globus pallidus interna) DBS for dystonia, where the electrode impedance unexpectedly increased 3-months post-operatively, followed by serologic and hematologic markers of inflammation at 6-months, prompting explantation surgery. We recreated these conditions in a laboratory environment to analyze the pattern of changing of electrical impedance across the contacts of a DBS lead following Staphylococcus biofilm formation...

Growth hormone is a key endocrine factor for metabolic adaptations to lactation and optimal reproductive function of the dairy cow. This study aimed to analyze the expression of GH and its receptor (GHR) in ovarian follicles, along with metabolic biomarkers, during the resumption of the postpartum follicular development, and to analyze the immunolocalization and protein expression of GH and GHR in preovulatory follicles. Thirty-six dairy cows were grouped according to the postpartum days (PPD) until the establishment of the first dominant follicle in: cows that established their first dominant follicle at fewer postpartum days (FPPD group; n = 15) and cows that established their first dominant follicle at more postpartum days (MPPD group; n = 22)...

Hyperkalaemia is a common electrolyte imbalance with potentially serious short-, medium- and long-term consequences on morbidity and mortality rates and the use of national health service resources. The fact that different medical specialities can manage hyperkalaemia makes it important to have a unified approach, and the recent availability of new specific drug treatments means that the approach needs to be updated. This consensus document from the scientific societies most directly involved in the management of hyperkalaemia (Sociedad Española de Cardiología [Spanish Society of Cardiology], Sociedad Española de Endocrinología y Nutrición [Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition], Sociedad Española de Medicina Interna [Spanish Society of Internal Medicine], Sociedad Española de Medicina de Urgencias y Emergencias [Spanish Society of Accident and Emergency Medicine] and Sociedad Española de Nefrología [Spanish Society of Nephrology]) first of all reviews basic aspects of potassium balance and blood potassium...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ear disease is relatively important in veterinary medicine as it significantly affects the quality of life of pets. Two hundred and twenty-one cases of canine ear diseases were collected and collated at the Xi'an Teaching Hospital of Northwest A&F University from 2012 to 2016. An epidemiological analysis was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and causes of various ear diseases in various breeds of dogs in Xi'an. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected and statistically analyzed by reviewing previous cases and obtaining medical history data and laboratory results...

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old neutered female feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-negative domestic shorthair cat was referred with an acute onset of vestibular signs. A clinical examination identified evidence of otitis externa of the right ear and enlargement of the right mandibular lymph node. MRI revealed predominantly T2 and FLAIR hyperintense and contrast-enhancing lesions affecting the right external ear canal, tympanic bulla and nasopharyngeal regions with intracranial extension. Cytology and culture and sensitivity samples collected from the middle ear via myringotomy revealed a population of intermediate to large lymphocytes consistent with lymphoma and mixed Staphylococcus chromogenes and Pasteurella species infection...

BACKGROUND: Syringomyelia is a spinal cord cavity containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-like fluid. If syringomyelia asymmetrically involves the dorsal horn grey matter of the spinal cord, affected dogs show increased signs of dysesthesia and neuropathic pain, like increased itching behaviour. In the dorsal horn, amongst others, receptors for Interleukin-31 (IL-31) can be found. IL-31 is one of the main cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of pruritus in atopic dermatitis in different species...

After estrus, when mature follicles fail to ovulate, they may further develop to form follicular cysts, affecting the normal function of ovaries, reducing the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows and causing economic losses to cattle farms. However, the key points of ovarian follicular cysts pathogenesis remain largely unclear. The purpose of the current research was to analyze the formation mechanism of ovarian follicular cysts from hormone and gene expression profiles. The concentrations of progesterone (P4 ), estradiol (E2 ), insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), leptin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and ghrelin in follicle fluid from bovine follicular cysts and normal follicles were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or 125I-labeled radioimmunoassay (RIA); the corresponding receptors' expression of theca interna cells was tested via quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and the mRNA expression profiling was analyzed via RNA sequencing (RNA-seq)...

Cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) loops are fundamental organizing units in mammalian brains. CSTCs process limbic, associative, and sensorimotor information in largely separated but interacting networks. CTSC loops pass through paired striatal compartments, striosome (aka patch) and matrix, segregated pools of medium spiny projection neurons with distinct embryologic origins, cortical/subcortical structural connectivity, susceptibility to injury, and roles in behaviors and diseases. Similarly, striatal dopamine modulates activity in striosome and matrix in opposite directions...

BACKGROUND: Myoclonus dystonia syndrome typically results from autosomal dominant mutations in the epsilon-sarcoglycan gene (SGCE) via the paternally expressed allele on chromosome 7q21. There is evidence that deep brain stimulation (DBS) is beneficial for this genotype, however, there are few prior case reports on DBS for myoclonus dystonia syndrome secondary to other confirmed genetic etiologies. CASE REPORT: A 20-year-old female with concomitant Russell-Silver syndrome and myoclonus dystonia syndrome secondary to maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (mUPD7) presented for medically refractory symptoms...
