OBJECTIVE: Preserving the facial nerve (FN) during surgery for large vestibular schwannomas (VSs) is challenging because of the unpredictable locations and morphological changes in the FN. Diffusion tensor imaging-based fiber tracking (DTI-FT) has been proposed to preoperatively visualize the FN. This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of DTI-FT for predicting FN location and shape in patients with large VSs. METHODS: In this prospective study, imaging data from 30 consecutive patients with large VSs were obtained using 3-T magnetic resonance imaging...

: Short antimicrobial peptides are essential to keep us healthy and their lasting potency can inspire the design of new types of antibiotics. This study reports the design of a family of eight-residue tryptophan-rich peptides (TetraF2W) obtained by converting the four phenylalanines in temporin-SHf to tryptophans. The temporin-SHf template was identified from the antimicrobial peptide database (http://aps.unmc.edu/AP). Remarkably, the double arginine variant (TetraF2W-RR) was more effective in killing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) USA300, but less cytotoxic to human skin HaCat and kidney HEK293 cells, than the lysine-containing dibasic combinations (KR, RK and KK)...

Cu3(BTC)2 (BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) showed to be an efficient and reusable heterogeneous solid catalyst for the formation of SiO bond through dehydrogenative coupling of dimethylphenylsilane (1) with phenol under mild reaction conditions. It is observed that Fe(BTC), MIL-101(Cr) and UiO-66(Zr) are not able to promote this cross coupling between 1 and phenol. Cu3(BTC)2 exhibits higher stability and activity compared to other MOFs studied here. Furthermore, Cu3(BTC)2 is reused for three consecutive cycles with a slight decay in its activity...

Chemical doping is a widely-used strategy to improve the performance of TiO2 for the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). However, the effect of two efficient dopants has been rarely investigated. We present the synthesis of GO@SnO2/TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) by a facile method using electrospinning and hydrothermal processes. The synthesized NFs are described in terms of morphology, crystallinity and chemistry through FESEM, TEM, HR-TEM, XRD, EDX, XPS, FT-IR and Raman spectra. As the results, the axial ratio and the average diameter of NFs decreased after the hydrothermal treatment and calcination process, respectively...

Organic ionic gel (OIG) electrolytes, also known as gel electrolytes or ionogels are one example of modern functional materials with the potential to use in wide range of electrochemical applications. The functionality of OIGs arises from the thermally reversible solidification of electrolytes or ionic liquids and their superior ionic conductivity. To understand and to predict the properties of these systems it is important to get the knowledge about the interactions on molecular level between the solid gelator matrix and the electrolyte solution...

In this study the geographical differentiation of dried sclerotia of the medicinal mushroom Wolfiporia extensa, obtained from different regions in Yunnan Province, China, was explored using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate data analysis. The FT-IR spectra of 97 samples were obtained for wave numbers ranging from 4000 to 400 cm-1. Then, the fingerprint region of 1800-600 cm-1 of the FT-IR spectrum, rather than the full spectrum, was analyzed. Different pretreatments were applied on the spectra, and a discriminant analysis model based on the Mahalanobis distance was developed to select an optimal pretreatment combination...

A 6-month-old Caucasian baby is described with a postaxial polydactyly of the letf foot. Radiographic examination revealed the accessory digit was composed of soft tissue, some with a tiny osseous element, originated from around the metatarsophalangeal joint, defined by floating type (FT). The parents had consistent difficulty putting shoes. We encountered an exceedingly rare presentation of FT, to our inspection, had neither been previously related in published studies. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the unusual case of congenital deformity lesion on the left foot to be reported in the medical literature...

The thermal gas-phase reactions of the closed-shell heteronuclear metal-oxide clusters [AlCeOx ](+) (x=2-4) with methane have been explored by FT-ICR mass spectrometry and high-level quantum-chemical calculation. Whereas [AlCeO2 ](+) and [AlCeO4 ](+) are inert towards methane under ambient conditions, [AlCeO3 ](+) spontaneously abstracts one hydrogen atom from methane. Mechanistic aspects have been addressed to reveal the reasons for the rather distinct reactivities of the [AlCeOx ](+) /CH4 couples, and the electronic origins of the unprecedented single hydrogen-atom abstraction from methane by closed-shell [AlCeO3 ](+) are discussed...

The enzyme under lower-intensity ultrasonic irradiation leads to favourable conformational changes, thereby enhancing its activity. The augmentation of activity of ultrasound-treated enzyme is strongly dependent on ultrasound intensity, duty cycle and exposure time, which was investigated for commercial lipases. Thermomyces lanuginosus (TL) lipase showed a 1.3-fold enhanced activity after irradiating at 22 kHz and 11.38 W cm(-2) with 50 % duty cycle for 25-min ultrasonic treatment and 1.5-fold enhanced activity was observed for lipozyme (candida antarctica lipase B (CALB)) lipase, at 22 kHz and 15...

As a kind of expensive perfume and valuable herb, Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (ALR) is often adulterated for economic motivations. In this research, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is employed to establish a simple and quick method for the adulteration screening of ALR. First, the principal chemical constituents of ALR are characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy at room temperature and two-dimensional correlation infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy with thermal perturbation. Besides the common cellulose and lignin compounds, a certain amount of resin is the characteristic constituent of ALR...

Hydrosilylation of a wide group of mono- and disubstituted (symmetrical and nonsymmetrical) alkynes with 1-dimethylsiloxy-3,5,7,9,11,13,15-heptaisobutylpentacyclo-[9.5.1.1(3,9).1(5,15).1(7,13)]octasiloxane ((HSiMe2O)(i-Bu)7Si8O12, 1) in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst (Pt2(dvs)3) has been performed for the first time. A series of new 1,2-(E)-disubstituted and 1,1,2-(E)-trisubstituted ethenes with a silsesquioxane moiety were selectively afforded and fully characterized. On the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (in situ FT-IR and/or FT-IR), the influence of alkyne structure and reaction conditions on the stereoselectivity as well as on the progress of triple bond hydrosilylation catalyzed by Pt2(dvs)3 was explained...

In this paper, we investigated the internal structure and the volume phase transition (VPT) behavior of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-vinylimidazole)/polymerizable carbon nanodot (P(VCL-co-VIM)/PCND) microgels with different amounts of PCNDs. Our study shows that compared to the pure P(VCL-co-VIM) microgel, the hybrid microgels undergo a two-step VPT as the temperature increases and a core-shell(-corona) structure of the hybrid microgels is formed by copolymerization with PCNDs. A change in the amount of PCNDs has effects on both of the volume phase transition temperature and internal structure of microgels...
