A series of highly-oxidized starch (HOS) were prepared using H2O2 and a copper-iron catalyst as a desired ligand for zirconium tanning of leather. The effects of catalyst and H2O2 dosages, and reaction temperature on the oxidation degree (OD, represented as the amount of carbonyl and carboxyl groups derived) of starch were investigated. The OD reached 76.2% when oxidation was conducted using 60% H2O2 and 0.015% catalyst at 98°C for 2h. (13)C NMR and FT-IR illustrated carbonyl and carboxyl groups were formed in HOS after oxidation...

Heparin has recently been shown to slow down idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) process and improve survival of patients in some cases. To improve the anti-IPF function while minimizing their side effects, we developed heparin libraries with different structures depolymerized by single or combined heparinases, and systematically screened the efficacy of the different heparins for treatment of Bleomycin-induced pulmonary injury and fibrosis using mice model. Then we characterized the structural properties of the components capable of treating pulmonary injury and fibrosis by use of chip-based amide hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC)-fourier transform (FT)-ESI-MS, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)...

The sugarcane bagasse was used for producing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and obtaining high-molecular-mass hemicellulose as co-product. To this end, the steam explosion process was employed. It was found that the optimum operating conditions are the temperature of 187.15°C, NaOH/bagasse ratio of 39% (w/w), and retention time (RT) of 10min. Next, the obtained cellulose in the optimized condition was extracted and purified, and it was subsequently converted to CMC according to Williamson etherification technique...

The fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FuCS) was isolated from the sea cucumber Holothuria polii body wall and then purified by anion exchange chromatography and the structure was characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Anticoagulant activity was measured in plasma by classical anticoagulation tests and the thrombin generation was assessed by calibrated automated thrombography. The results showed that the FuCS obtained at a yield of 4.66% possesses high sulfate content 43% and an average molecular mass of 45...

The interfacial adhesion between polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and native starch is poor. To improve the interfacial adhesion, PHAs were in-situ grafted onto starch using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a free radical initiator. The grafting reaction was carefully characterized and confirmed by gel analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The gel yield of the PHAs/starch/DCP blend increased with the DCP concentration up to 2wt%. Meanwhile, obvious plastic deformation (stretched fibrils) was observed at the interface in the PHAs/starch/DCP blend in comparison with complete interfacial debonding in the PHAs/starch physical blend...

A stimuli-responsive cotton fabric was designed using temperature and pH-responsive poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (poly-NiPAAm) and chitosan (PNCS) microgel as a carrier of antimicrobially active 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (Si-QAC), which forms a bio-barrier on the fibre surface. The influence of Si-QAC on the moisture management and thermoregulation abilities of the PNCS microgel was investigated. Using a pad-dry cure method, Si-QAC was applied to a 100% cotton fabric model in concentrations ranging from 0...

In order to understand the chemical structure of chitin-based acrylate superabsorbent polymers (SAP), chitin was dissolved in NaOH aqueous solution via freezing-thawing cyclic treatment without urea, subsequently, a transparent hydrogel was prepared by copolymerizing the alkali-chitin solution and acrylic acid directly. The effects of the degree of deacetylation (DDA) and the molecular weight (Mw) of chitin on the properties of SAP were investigated in detail. With increasing the DDA and Mw, the yield improved while the water absorbency decreased, yet the effect of DDA is insignificant if the Mw is smaller enough...

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted greater scientific interests for the construction of drugs loading cargos due to their biocompatibility, safety and facile surface modifications. This study deals with the fabrication of gum tragacanth (GT) green AuNPs as carrier for Naringin, a less water soluble therapeutic molecule. The optimized AuNPs were characterized through UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR and atomic force microscope (AFM). Naringin loaded nanoparticles were investigated for their bactericidal potentials using Tetrazolium Microplate assay...

In this work, crystalline structural variations of cellulose during pulp beating of tobacco stems were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR spectroscopy. The results showed that the correlation between the cellulose crystallinity index and the degree of beating was not a linear but an initially upward and then downward trend followed by a repeating fluctuation as a result of the beating action on amorphous regions first and then on crystalline cellulose. It was proposed that the whole beating process might be presumably divided into two phases in the case of the evolution of the crystallinity index...

The esterification of bagasse with glutaric anhydride could increase surface adhesion compatibility and the surface of derived polymers has the potential of immobilizing peptides or proteins for biomedical application. Due to its complicated components, the esterification mechanism of bagasse esterified with glutaric anhydride in ionic liquids has not been studied. In this paper, the homogenous esterification of bagasse with glutaric anhydride was comparatively investigated with the isolated cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) to reveal the reaction mechanism...

In climates that experience short growing seasons due to drought, heat or end-of-season frost, early flowering is a highly desirable trait for chickpeas. In this study, we mapped, sequenced and characterized Efl1, an ortholog of Arabidopsis ELF3 that confers early flowering in chickpea. In a RIL population derived from a cross between CDC Frontier and ICCV 96029, this gene was mapped to the site of a QTL on Ca5 that explained 59% of flowering time variation under SD. Sequencing of ELF3 in ICCV 96029 revealed an 11-bp deletion in the first exon that was predicted to result in a premature stop codon...

This study focused on evaluating a technique for the psyllium husk mucilage (PHM) purification with simultaneous microencapsulation of curcumin. PHM was extracted with water and purified with ethanol. For the mucilage purification and simultaneous microencapsulation, an ethanolic solution of curcumin was used. After dehydration, the samples were analysed by instrumental techniques and evaluated for thermal stability. The presence of curcumin in the solution did not impair the yield of precipitated polysaccharide...

Design of electrocatalysts for the fundamentally important oxygen evolution reaction can be greatly aided by systematic structure-activity tuning via composition variation. We have explored the iron-cerium system as they are the most abundant transition and rare earth metals, and also due to the mutualistic impact of their size and electronic attributes that can induce critical changes in the structure and electrochemical activity. Submicrometer thick films of a series of Fe(III)-Ce(III) phosphate(oxyhydroxide) (FeCePH) are fabricated using a soft chemical strategy involving surfactant-aided assembly, spin-coating, and mild thermal annealing...

In this study, we compared the influence of two different collection methods, filtration (FT) and continuous flow field centrifugation (CFC), on the concentration and the distribution of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) occurring in river waters. SPM samples were collected simultaneously with FT and CFC from a river during six sampling campaigns over 2 years, covering different hydrological contexts. SPM samples were analyzed to determine the concentration of PACs including 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 11 oxygenated PACs (O-PACs), and 5 nitrogen PACs (N-PACs)...
