BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy has been found safe and associated with advantages over open pancreaticoduodenectomy in prior studies. We compared outcomes of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy at a single institution after applying technical aspects and perioperative care learned from laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy to the open pancreaticoduodenectomy practice. METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2020, all patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy were identified, and information was collected in a prospective fashion...

Background: Jones fracture, or proximal fifth metatarsal fracture, is a common injury in National Football League (NFL)-caliber athletes. Combine draft performance can greatly impact the long-term success of these athletes, and substantial emphasis has been placed on early return to play (RTP) and the minimization of post-operative complications after Jones fracture in these athletes. To date, no study has specifically described the treatment and outcomes of this injury specifically in NFL-caliber players, considering factors relevant to this unique population...

Parasites are very diverse and common in both natural populations and in stocks kept in aquacultural facilities. For most cultured species, there are important bacteria and viruses causing diseases, but eukaryotic parasites are also very important. We review the various combinations of aquacultured species and eukaryotic parasitic groups and discuss other problems associated with aquaculture such as eutrophication, zoonotic species, and invasive species, and we conclude that further development of aquaculture in a sustainable manner must include a holistic approach (One Health) where many factors (e...

Pseudotropheus Regan had been a catch-all genus for many of the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malai, known as mbuna, for over half a century. Although many of the species previously assigned to this genus have since been allocated to other genera there are still about a dozen species in the genus that do not appear to be closely related to its type species, P. williamsi, but for which no better placement could be found. Pseudotropheus livingstonii (Boulenger) is one such species and the new species described herein appears to be closely related and has for that reason been temporarily assigned to Pseudotropheus...

BACKGROUND: Historically, orthopaedic surgery has had low female representation, with <6% of practicing surgeons identifying as female. Although prior literature has illustrated gender disparities in first and last authorship as well as changes in gender representation over time, less attention has been paid to middle authorship. We hypothesized that trends in female authorship would reflect increasing female participation in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic subspecialties coinciding with an overall increase in female authorship...

WDR44 prevents ciliogenesis initiation by regulating RAB11-dependent vesicle trafficking. Here, we describe male patients with missense and nonsense variants within the WD40 repeats (WDR) of WDR44, an X-linked gene product, who display ciliopathy-related developmental phenotypes that we can model in zebrafish. The patient phenotypic spectrum includes developmental delay/intellectual disability, hypotonia, distinct craniofacial features and variable presence of brain, renal, cardiac and musculoskeletal abnormalities...

Protein tyrosine sulfation is a post-translational modification (PTM) that is rarely reported in recombinant therapeutic proteins. However, when sulfation does occur, the additional negative charge from the modification can influence intermolecular interactions and antigen-binding activity, making it a critical quality attribute that necessitates stringent control. In this study, we developed a unique hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) method for the separation and quantification of a therapeutic bispecific antibody with varying degrees of sulfation...

Hyperactivity of serotonin 3 receptors (5-HT3 R) underlies pathologies associated with irritable bowel syndrome and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Setrons, a class of high-affinity competitive antagonists, are used in the treatment of these conditions. Although generally effective for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, the use of setrons for treating irritable bowel syndrome has been impaired by adverse side effects. Partial agonists are now being considered as an alternative strategy, with potentially less severe side effects than full antagonists...

Cardiovascular diseases, especially congestive heart failure (CHF), are known complications of anthracyclines, but the risk for patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant (HDT-ASCT) is not well established. With T-cell therapies emerging as alternatives, studies of long-term complications after HDT-ASCT are warranted. Danish patients treated with HDT-ASCT for aggressive lymphoma between 2001 and 2017 were matched 1:5 on sex, birth year and Charlson comorbidity score to the general population...

Red blood cell (RBC) metabolic reprogramming upon exposure to high altitude contributes to physiological human adaptations to hypoxia, a multifaceted process critical to health and disease. To delve into the molecular underpinnings of this phenomenon, first, we performed a multi-omics analysis of RBCs from six lowlanders after exposure to high-altitude hypoxia, with longitudinal sampling at baseline, upon ascent to 5,100 m and descent to sea level. Results highlighted an association between erythrocyte levels of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG), an allosteric regulator of hemoglobin that favors oxygen off-loading in the face of hypoxia, and expression levels of the Rhesus blood group RHCE protein...

Federal and state laws in the United States governing the use of cannabis are rapidly evolving. Under federal law, marijuana and its derivatives remain schedule I, defined as substances having no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Hemp and its derivatives, in contrast, have been removed from schedule I. At the state level, a majority of states have passed laws legalizing cannabis in some form, although these laws vary from state to state in terms of the extent to which use is permitted, approved medical uses, and the types of regulation placed on commercial activity and quality control...

In the last few years, twin-screw wet granulation (TSWG) has become one of the key continuous pharmaceutical unit operations. Despite the many studies that have been performed, only little is known about the effect of the starting material properties on the stepwise granule formation along the length of the twin-screw granulator (TSG) barrel. Hence, this study obtained a detailed understanding of the effect of formulation properties (i.e., Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) properties, formulation blend particle size distribution and formulation drug load) and process settings on granule formation in TSWG...

Ectopic pancreas, or the presence of pancreatic tissue separate from the anatomic pancreas, is rarely reported in locations other than the stomach or duodenum. A 43-year-old female was found to have a large jejunal mesenteric ectopic pancreas causing ectopic pancreatitis during workup for frequent episodes of abdominal pain. We present the imaging findings and postresection pathology findings of a rare jejunal ectopic pancreas and discuss the potential complications of this unique condition.
